Bums hanging out of the bottom of teeny tiny shorts

Don’t know if this really AIBU or a question!
AIBU to think that shorts have become way too short ?
I have seen a LOT of girls in shorts today - with their bum cheeks hanging out the bottom ! Personally I wouldn’t let my daughter out like that. And I wouldn’t were them myself (I would give everyone nightmares !).
so what’s the consensus on bums hanging out of shorts ?

Meh, there are worse things people do. Bum cheeks arent less hygenic than hands. I'd not choose to wear them, admittedly.

But that was the fashion of the time. There was a hotpants craze in the 1970s.

People upthread said they wore them.

I remember the 1970s.

These were 1970s hotpants. VERY different.

If you don’t like it, don’t look.

Try getting on an escalator with the girl in front having her vulva literally in your face.

I think if you buy these then you should have to do an escalator mirror check before final purchase.

Glad we’ve got you here to dictate to rest of us what should and shouldn’t be considered indecent or obscene 🙄

Indecent and obscene are legal terms.

No-one's getting arrested for showing a bit of bum cheeks.

Her vulva literally in your face??

Do you know what any of these words mean?

PintofFizz · Yesterday 21:59

JillThePlantKiller · Yesterday 21:55

Of course if all of us middle aged mums started wearing them, we could kill the trend stone dead in a week.

Exactly!
There's an article in the Daily Mail today telling women over 50 what not to wear.

Sleeveless things, capri pants and anything that makes you look like a mum are on the list.

Oh for Christ sake. Her vulva in your face?

The 1970s one show buttocks too.

People upthread said they wore even shorter in the 70s.

Those women are posed in a particular way. Standing up the shorts would cover the bottom. The ones women, including young teens, are wearing are cut entirely differently.

Agreed. 🫣

This is what I don’t get. Why they were fine in the 1970s but why the women who were born in the 1970s only have an issue with girls wearing them today.

And I speak as a conservative dresser.

These shorts aren't what we're talking about. They cover the bum. To give you an idea, I've seen women wearing literally belts with a couple of inches of fringe, and a G string, and that's it.

We're not talking hotpants or Daisy Dukes. Honestly, this is next level.

If it's not your kind of fashion - don't wear it.

However, you don't get to bitch about what other people wear and then expect to be able to make choices for yourself.

Either we choose for ourselves, or we have some sort of forced uniform that is decided by ?who - is that what we want? Clothing forced upon us by others.

However, you don't get to bitch about what other people wear and then expect to be able to make choices for yourself.

Well, we do actually. Sorry, but you don't make the rules.

AhhhSchtop · Yesterday 22:01

I refuse to be scandalised by what young women wear. It’s so…Mary Whitehouse.

p.s. I was wearing short shorts circa 1993. We called them ‘batty riders’. This is not new.

You are taking my post too seriously and getting your gusset in a tangle over nothing.

No I didn't. You incorrectly implied that there would be no reason for someone wearing lycra to be in a cafe. Yet, it should be common knowledge that cyclists frequently stop at cafes during long cycles.

DancingLions · Yesterday 22:01

The thing is though, if this was fat hairy builder Dave with his butt cheeks on display you can bet everyone would be calling it grim and saying he should cover up. I really dont think people would be defending his right to wear what he wants!

A lot of places have rules around men being topless in the summer months. Its not allowed in many places. But there's nothing "private" about mens chests so why do we need that rule? Because people find it gross!

Oh but if its young attractive women its ok? Well yes, no men are going to complain about it are they!

Have you never been to a beach?

Women are allowed to wear G-straings.

Sayswho546 · Yesterday 22:02

it doesn’t really bother me (though there is some envy that my arse cheeks are somehow much larger and at the same time much saggier and flatter….also they never seem to have the dimples aka sink holes that I also have 😂)

PeachySmile2 · Yesterday 22:03

Bloody awful. In town today, we were waking behind a girl no older than 13 with her shorts rolled
up as high as she could, ass cheeks fully on display! Just awful. I expect they were not rolled up when she left home as surely no mother would allow their child to dress like that.

mrandmrsrobinson · Yesterday 22:05

Just me remembers "hot pants" then?

If you don’t like it, don’t look.

God this is such a stupid thing to say.

Its so so tiresome that people have read this trite response, then repeat it as though its some of clever gotcha. When, in fact it is just a bit thick.

We have eyes, we are constantly assessing our surroundings. You will see arse cheeks whether you like it or not. You may avert your gaze once the bare arse has come into your field of vision. But you cannot walk around or drive around with your eyes shut.

Are there just a lot of bots about or do real people actually not understand how eyes work?

Daft.

babyproblems · Yesterday 22:08

I agree it’s hideous. I also think thong bikinis are too much!
It’s all for the male gaze. I think most girls wearing these tiny shorts don’t realise the powers that be and the control the manosphere really has still. The kardashians have a lot to answer for- they’ve been nothing but negative for women imo. I hate this aspect of pop culture.
I also think a lot of those vintage / retro photos that have been posted - the shorts are still longer than what I see today. The hot pants have a straighter cut- today’s hot pant shorts are often cut on the diagonal so the edge of the short (on the other thigh if you like) is much higher than the gusset of the short. Retro hot pants were a straighter cut across from gusset to outer leg. The reason the cut of today’s shorts is different is to highlight the waist shape and bottom shape - favoured because it gives a slimmer silhouette even on a curvier body which is what today’s consumers’ (of that age group 15-35) seek in garment cuts. That curvy yet slim body shape is what the Kardashian’s have peddled.

boringperson123 · Yesterday 22:08

Am I the only one that thinks many pairs of shorts sold now (denim shorts generally) often look a normal length but ride up the arse. I always have to take videos from behind of me walking to check. Granted I have a big bum and small waist so maybe I need to just buy shorts that drown my waist to get the size around the bum area

PintofFizz · Yesterday 22:09

It was me who pointed out that cyclists stop in cafes so I do know that.

The comparison was between school mums in lycra out and about and men in lycra out and about.

Both stop in cafes.

I could definitely do without seeing the cyclists nobs in sweaty lycra whilst I'm having a coffee.

youalright · Yesterday 22:09

Do you mean these. Then I agree these are a bit much to be wearing round aldi 🤣🤣

interesting responses. To the person who said just don’t look, you can’t help but look!
I actually think the shorts are better than the skirts some are wearing -
and finally - yes to lots of you - this is true that short shorts have been about since the 60s ?
eye watering none the less 🤣 (I’m sure I’ve worn eye wateringly low tops at some point way back in the dark ages !)
