To remind people of French swimming pool rule

Solmum1964 · 27/06/2026 23:01

Just a quick reminder for people holidaying in France this year. Many public swimming pools and campsites insist that boys and men wear proper (lycra) swimming trunks in their pools. These can be traditional brief style, swim shorts or jammers but must be tight around the leg for hygiene purposes. Looser swim shorts are not allowed.
I'm currently on holiday in France and have seen a number of men asked to leave the pool because they were not wearing appropriate swimwear.

For anyone moaning about the French rules - do you ever go to UK public pools? Because I do and they are only rarely anywhere as clean and pleasant to use as the French ones.

Uk public swimming pools - piss ‘n’ plasters and God knows what on your feet because nobody wears pool sandals except foreigners who usually look disgusted. And I don’t blame them.

Does anyone know if women can wear full coverage swimsuits with long arms and legs in France? I have to wear one because I cant have sun on my skin due to pre cancerous moles.
Ive heard they make muslim women uncover over there.
Im not muslim but they might think my suit is some kind of religious thing.

The general rule is that shoulders and knees must be visible in women’s swimwear. Some places are very strict and won’t budge and I don’t know that a doctors note would make much headway. Others have rules but don’t actually enforce them.

Have a look at reviews on trip advisor and elsewhere for the resort you’re planning to go to. If they’re strictly enforcing the men’s wear there will be a lot of uk reviews moaning about it. If you’re not seeing that, they’ll probably be more flexible. Also resorts with more Brits/Irish tend to be less strict ime than the ones that are mainly catering to French/spanish/Germans.

Why would that be a problem

Sweat and grime, I guess.

Last time I tried to buy decent Lycra men’s swimming trunks in the UK I hit a bit of a blank. Any places which do good quality ones? High street just has racks and racks of swim shorts.

Last summer we bought mens ones from Decathlon and boys ones from Next. If you can wait until you get to France you can buy them in any big supermarket or clothing store that sells swimwear.

My husband always has 'skid' marks on his underpants at the end of the day 🤮 I don't thin̈k that my underwear has ever had any skidmarks on them...

And you share a bed with this man? 🤢 my fanny would weld shut permanently.

But that’s not likely to happen. Most women wouldn’t pop to the supermarket in just their bikini in the morning, sit on a park bench and have a coffee in their bikini then get the bus to the pool in the afternoon in their bikini.

I disagree. I think many women do wear a bikini all day under shorts and t-shits etc.

GreenLemonade · Yesterday 17:55

We just came back from France, we didn't stay on a campsite but we visited a water park. DH wore his regular loose swim shorts, DS was in shorts and a rash vest. Nobody said anything about their clothing and I didnt think they stood out in any way.

I’m not sure if there were any women in Muslim clothes, I wasn’t paying attention. But I remember seeing signs that showed long sleeved tops and full length trousers were not allowed. Elbow length tops and knee length trousers were ok.

Just to note, we weren’t trying to break the rules, we had no idea pools in France have these rules.

Why would that be a problem

Because of all the grime from public transport etc.

angelos02 · Yesterday 18:00

Well they're the rules in their country so that's the end of it.

Single50something · Yesterday 18:06

Good post. We go to france every year and every year see the life guard politely asking English people to wear correct trunks. Women always have tight to body clothing so not sure why the men fuss quite so much :(

Yes but they take the outer clothes off before getting in a swimming pool! Men go around all day in their board shorts then just get in the pool in them along with whatever grime they’ve picked up from whatever surfaces they sat on/rubbed against 🤢

IrrationalIvy · Yesterday 19:14

I have a bit of a phobia of swimming pools, just the thought that the water I’m swimming in has sloshed around the armpits, arse and crotch of a load of strangers with unknown hygiene standards before splashing in my face, regardless of whether the poo particles, pubes and other bits and bobs have been chlorinated or not. I’d be delighted if everyone had to scrub up and wear tight fitting suits & swim caps.

You can buy anti- uv swimsuits in many colours other than black.

I must have missed where she said her swim outfits are black.

So to the elbow is fine but to the wrist is banned because of Muslims.

What utter tossers the French authorities are.

forgivingfiggy · Yesterday 19:52

Surely it’s so pool water doesn’t flow through the shorts, swilling out bum holes, peepees and dislodging pubes and carrying it back into the water. Tight swimwear does encourage the same through flow.

LouiseK93 · Yesterday 19:56

Incase a bollock slips out into someone's face perhaps? 😆

Livingthebestlife · Yesterday 19:58

Omg what a weirdo rule. What does wearing those god awful hilarious tight things going to achieve? So is it only for men to wear tight clothing or do women have to wear tight swimwear ? I love a shortish loose swim short myself. Am shocked about the rules on clothing length too, what on earth 😲 it all seems a bit draconian to me.

Does he not know how to wipe his arse properly?? Tell him to do a better job, and eat some fibre so he’s not shitting playdoh. You shouldnt be washing shit-stained undies for a grown man.
