To remind people of French swimming pool rule

Solmum1964 · 27/06/2026 23:01

Just a quick reminder for people holidaying in France this year. Many public swimming pools and campsites insist that boys and men wear proper (lycra) swimming trunks in their pools. These can be traditional brief style, swim shorts or jammers but must be tight around the leg for hygiene purposes. Looser swim shorts are not allowed.
I'm currently on holiday in France and have seen a number of men asked to leave the pool because they were not wearing appropriate swimwear.

Does anyone know if women can wear full coverage swimsuits with long arms and legs in France? I have to wear one because I cant have sun on my skin due to pre cancerous moles.
Ive heard they make muslim women uncover over there.
Im not muslim but they might think my suit is some kind of religious thing.

It really depends on the operator. I was at a Dutch owned campsite in France last year. There were a number of Muslim women were playing in the pool with their kids in modest clothing. No one was bothered & there weren’t restrictions. However it isn’t the norm. Some sites go as far as banning UV swim tops or limit them to young kids. You have to go to the website & see what they say. However, if there are no details I would assume standard tight fitting swimwear is required in France. On 90% of campsites we have visited it is & I have seen people challenged.

Thanks for reminder of how weird the French can be.

southerngirl10 · Yesterday 07:40

Why are you you warning us about men having to leave the pool? I that's what most of us on here would love to happen. Shh! Stop telling them! 😀

SusanChurchouse · Yesterday 07:40

My husband and son wore longer jammer style Lycra swim shorts when we were in France last year. My son actually preferred them to the board style shorts and I agree they’re more hygienic. We did see people in baggy swim shorts in the hotel pool, despite the rules.

Looking at booking a Dutch Center Parcs for this year and the rules seemed to be that you could wear full coverage swimwear as long as it was tight fitting and of swimsuit material.

Yousay55 · Yesterday 07:41

You’re not allowed to wear swim dresses either. I had a fairly average one from m & s and was asked to leave the pool.
i bought a long floaty tankini top-as long as the swim dress was, a pair of fitted swim shorts -and for some reason that was ok. This has been in multiple pools in France. Madness!

Owlbookend · Yesterday 07:43

Apart from a few (usually pensioners for some reason) who go for old style true ‘Speedos’ the overwhelming majority of men and boys opt for something like this style. Like tight fitting short boxers. They are always deemed acceptable. As everyone is wearing them it isn’t a big deal. Banning modest & uv protecting choices is more of an issue.

Don’t forget that there is a new law in some French towns that men must wear tops when wandering round in public
(I don’t know about women)

My husband always has 'skid' marks on his underpants at the end of the day 🤮 I don't thin̈k that my underwear has ever had any skidmarks on them...

What?

He needs to see a doctor or learn how to wipe his bum.

It’s a case of what happens on the beach stays on the beach. Men and women are not required to wear tops on the beach. But on the promenade and in towns tops are required.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · Yesterday 07:55

When my DCs had swimming lessons this was the rule.
No baggy clothing allowed.
Only proper Lycra type swim wear.

How I wish that would become law in the UK.
So tired of seeing men’s sweaty bodies flabbling about in town. Often with said men wearing socks and heavy boots/trainers and even jeans!
Ffs wear a top.

Yeah cos we're totally normal here in Britain.

We went to a water park in Tenerife recently and I was surprised at how many men and boys seemed to be wearing underwear under their swim shorts - is this a thing now?

TheGirlWhoLived · Yesterday 08:09

Isn’t it something to do with farmers spending long days in the fields in shorts and then going straight into the pool? I’m sure I read that somewhere… in which case I would much rather they changed into something more sanitary 😆

DryTerryandJUNE · Yesterday 08:09

Flamingojune · 27/06/2026 23:55

Why would that be a problem

You want a labourer or farmer getting in the pool in the clothes he's been wearing all day? Riiiight.
That's where this rule came from back in the 90s, I think.

I think it’s extra protection in case their swimming trunks come down.
Women should never wear a bikini on water slides for the same reason, unless you want to risk showing the world your arse and fandango.

So what do you think is acceptable?

Can a woman wander round in gym shorts and a short top? Is sleeveless ok for you or should armpits always be covered?

Is it just the fatties that you don't like to see, or is it just that you think unattractive people in general should hide more of themselves away?

I go topless at the beach and am not a pearl clutcher. But what l don’t think is acceptable are male sweaty bare backs on park benches and even busses. Both seen recently.

floraaugusta · Yesterday 08:21

I'm surprised they don't allow UV sun shirts, as they help mitigate that greasy film of everyone's sunscreen that develops on the surface of the pool.

DryTerryandJUNE · Yesterday 08:22

Peony1985 · Yesterday 06:39

We have a Lido in town and you are asked to shower first. They did publish the stars on how much cleaner the water if people do this.

The reaction of chlorine with urea (from sweat and pee) is what makes people's eyes go red/sting from chlorine. Washing before swimming hugely reduces the problem.

Ohmygawdflippingheck · Yesterday 08:22

DS's school has the same rule for their swimming lessons in our local pool for some reason. They have to wear jammers or speedos and a swimming cap. It's a public pool and the same rules don't apply at any other time 🤷‍♀️

That's disgusting. My 7 year old doesn't even have faeces in his underwear. How can you go anywhere near someone who can't even wipe his own arse?!

What’s acceptable is to wear a top.
Not wander around literally hours away from a beach completely bare chested.
How hard is that to understand?
Wear what the fuck you like as long as you are wearing clothes.
Wear a vest, cropped top, jumper, ski suit. Whatever but wear a top!
When will people realise that exposing your flesh to the blazing sun isn’t good for you? It’s far better to wear a loose linen or cotton shirt than to expose your skin to the full sun.
Do you really see women bare chested wandering about in town?
I very much doubt it.
I don’t care if anyone wears a bra or cropped top of any sex, go ahead. Personally I don’t but that’s just me.

Flamingojune · Yesterday 08:25

ColdAsAWitches · Yesterday 00:18

That was a typo for shorts, but in either case it's the same principle - you don't add sweat, dirt or dust to the water.

Just shower first?
