Feeling ashamed after blacking out from alcohol

Yesterday I went for drinks with a friend of mine in the afternoon. I got home to my family early evening and I have memory loss. I had 4 glasses of wine and I don’t drink often.

I now feel completely ashamed of myself. Worried about how I have acted and what I have said and done, both at home and whilst out. I’ve literally blacked out.

This isn’t really an AIBU but I really need some moral support. I feel like I just can’t drink. Is 4 glasses of wine excessive? They weren’t large glasses or anything.

A reminder of your limits. It was also very hot. Don't beat yourself up. Next time have a glass of wine followed by a soft drink.

Don’t feel ashamed. It happened, it’s happened to many of us once in our life time.
The heat won’t have helped , you were probably dehydrated and the wine affected you more than it usually would.
just send an oops text and laugh about it.

the heat does not help but you know now that stop at 2 maybe 3 glasses.
make sure that you have food to mop it up!

How strong was the wine? Had you eaten, was it really hot and how much do you drink normally? Lots of things can affect how drunk you get on any particular occasion. Four standard glasses of wine over three hours in normal circumstances I wouldn't expect most people to be falling down drunk, but now you know, take it a bit slower another time and consider all the circumstances.

If they weren't large glasses, 4 standard single unit glasses is 4/6 or 2/3 of a bottle of wine. It's substantial but not enough to blackout.

"Large" is relative though to what you would drink normally and see as large.

If they were big glasses, 4 glasses can easily be a bottle of wine +.

If they were really standard glasses of single units, then I would be worrying about whether your drink had been spiked.

A 125ml glass is more like 1.5 units, as a bottle is usually 8-10 units total.

I’m the same with wine and four glasses would do that for me. Blacked out last time I drank it and I’ve never drank it since. You’ve probably got a bit of hanxiety going on. Don’t feel too ashamed, you didn’t harm anyone. Just don’t drink wine again.

OP, be kind to yourself. Most of us have done this at some point in our lives (I certainly have and I know plenty of friends, family and colleagues that have too). Alcohol makes us feel anxious the next day (hanxiety). It's normal to feel anxious especially when you can't remember. Chalk it up to one of those things. You got home safe and you didn't do anything terrible - you just drank a bit more than you could handle and feel embarrassed. You will be more careful next time. It's not a huge amount to drink but sometimes what we've eaten, our hormones/time of the month, sleep, how quickly we've consumed it etc can contribute to how alcohol affects us. You will feel much better tomorrow.

Wine does the same to me! After three I forget things… forget what I’ve said, how I got home etc!
