Brook George and death penalty in UAE

Is it naive to hope that somehow this won’t happen, she will come home, no firing squad?

She's charged with premeditated murder which is as serious as it can get. Wait for more information as currently there is only her mother's comment that she is terrified. If I was up on that charge I would be terrified too.
Yet another young person who thinks that there are no risks to travelling abroad to meet someone. Are they not aware of what has happened to others? Ignorance is no longer an acceptable excuse.

ColdAsAWitches · 25/06/2026 14:33

There's nothing wrong with not wanting it to happen. The death penalty shouldn't exist anywhere, it's barbaric. But putting it as "come home" is wrong without knowing any more facts about whther she actually murdered someone or was acting in self defence.

NoctuaAthene · 25/06/2026 15:05

Well she's not even convicted yet, never mind sentenced. I don't know much about the legal system in UAE but there is presumably some form of appeal process. Plus I'm sure there would be some kind of political/diplomatic intervention or appeal for clemency from the UK government in the event she's found guilty and sentenced to death, although of course the general principle is that UK citizens abroad aren't somehow exempt from the legal system in that country. So no, not naive but I do think, as per PP, it's wise to refrain from too much speculation and comment when so little is known about the actual facts...

edit: and spelling her name wrong

A 23-year-old TikTok influencer charged with the murder of her boyfriend in Dubai is facing death by firing squad, a human rights group has said.
Brooke George, from Gravesend, Kent, has been charged over the stabbing of a man who she was in a relationship with after they met online, advocacy group Detained in Dubai said.

The group said she claimed she grabbed a knife in self defence during a violent attack by her partner in the UAE. The organisation called for her to be released on bail and for the case to be dealt with as domestic violence.
The Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office said it was supporting a British woman detained in the UAE and her family.
Former John Lewis worker George was arrested in the early hours of 22 June and charged with premeditated murder.

She faces execution under UAE laws if convicted.
While being held at Bur Dubai Police Station she has alleged being forced to strip naked in front of male officers, without a female officer present, which she said was "deeply humiliating and distressing", Detained in Dubai said.
'Change in behaviour'
On her first visit to Dubai, George had described it as "the time of my life".
But, according to Radha Stirling, chief executive of Detained in Dubai, the relationship became abusive on their second trip to the Gulf city.
Stirling said George claimed her partner became "increasingly controlling and abusive" and she was trying to leave Dubai after he allegedly punched her, witheld her passport and then attacked her again at their apartment.
She claimed she "feared for her life and, reaching for a kitchen knife within her grasp, acted in self defence", Stirling added.

In a statement, her mother, Thereza George, said: "After Brooke returned to Dubai for the second time, the dynamic between them had clearly changed.
"The day before the incident, she did not seem like herself. She was quieter and not her usual happy, cheerful self, but she did not tell me why.
"That evening they went to a bar in Dubai. When I spoke to Brooke right after the incident, she was absolutely terrified. I have never seen my daughter so frightened in my life. She was crying uncontrollably. I could see that one of her eyes was badly swollen and was beginning to close."

She added she was "deeply concerned" for her daughter's welfare.
"The daughter I spoke to that night was utterly terrified," she added.
"I firmly believe she was desperately trying to get home and away from whatever had happened to her."

It's possible, I'm not aware they have executed a British citizen in recent history. Some have received the death penalty, but it's later been reduced to serving a long prison term. The problem here is the seriousness of the crime she's accused of; it doesn't get much more serious than murder. UAE have very strict laws and harsh punishments for the slightest crime, i don't know how 'lenient' they could be with murder. Do they even have lesser murder charges, or degrees of murder?

I feel terrible for her, the best hope is that she gets the charge reduced if they can find evidence she was being imprisoned/harmed.

Lmnop22 · 25/06/2026 20:25

You don’t say why you want her to come home?

Because you believe in her innocence or because you disagree with the death penalty at all or both?

AplineDaisies · 25/06/2026 20:28

There's nothing about the victim, the man who was murdered.

nomas · 25/06/2026 20:32

There is no way Dubai is going to give her the death penalty if she’s found guilty, the optics are bad for tourism. There’s only been a couple of death penalties since 1997.

Her sentence would be commuted to a prison sentence.

The victim has been named, also British - Bill Treeby , 26 years old

From the article, it says she was visiting.

I know someone locked up in Dubai for killing his wife.

He's out now and living in England.

Dubai knows which side their bread is buttered on.

They won't be taking chances of their state becoming a no-go area for westerners, working or holidaying. I've never heard of them killing a westerner for a crime.

I feel sorry for the man. He is after all a victim of domestic abuse.

for killing his wife.

It’ll be interesting to see whether killing a man will be considered equally

Wtafdidido · 26/06/2026 03:13

She was incredibly stupid. She wanted the glitz and glamour life style so travelled to see a man she knew v little about. How did she not realise she only had a one way ticket? That would have been obvious and a big red flag but she still chose to go. He bought her new clothes and organised a paid professional lingerie shoot. Red flag? He confiscated her passport. Red flag. She should have immediately gone to the embassy and asked for consular assistance but no she was still dreaming the dream. He began to control and abuse her. Still she stayed. Again she could easily have sought help. They fight she stabs him to death. Does not call for help as he lays dying, runs away, comes back to the scene for her passport. Again she should have called the British Consulate for help or gone there in person the reported the fight. But instead she tried to leave the country.
what a mess and what a stupid girl. What is it with young people nowadays being so blinkered with the need for the high life that they take such stupid risks. She has done herself no favours and will face the harshest penalties out there. Sad but a situation of her own making.

Plinketyplonks · 26/06/2026 03:21

I am not sure the UAE would ever execute a Brit given the diplomatic row it would cause. They do send Britons to jail for a very long time there though!

allthemind · 26/06/2026 03:26

theres no way theyll execute her for murdering another Brit. She'll get a prison sentence then be allowed back to the UK aftera couple of years. Which is wrong really if she did actualy murder him. They both seem like people who's lifestyles were never going to wnd well.

StPetersburg · 26/06/2026 03:50

I feel sorry for the man. He is after all a victim of domestic abuse.

Apparently he was violent towards her first.
He hid her passport to stop her from leaving him and going home. Then he attacked her.

If all that bears true then I don’t feel sorry for him.

thornbury · 26/06/2026 04:24

They don't pass the death penalty on tourists. But she is in the wrong and has to face the consequences.

The guy who was just killed, called Bill, was one of the children of Jack Treeby

Jack's older brother, called Bill and HIS two sons Billy and George killed Jack after hunting him and another brother, Gary down

One of Jack's sons, Bill's brother and also called Jack was shot but survived

Bill's wife Charity, was convicted of injuring Gary

They do not seem to be nice people

Plinketyplonks · 26/06/2026 07:01

Come to think of it, a few years ago a British newspaper editor in Dubai got sentenced for murdering his wife. He got all the sentences etc and after about maybe 5 years in jail was allowed to return to the UK.

But this is a woman

Who is accused of killing a man

In the United Arab Emirates

A country ruled by a monarchy

With Islam as the state religion

Different sex, different rules

Maybe, but they don't really want to stop stupid westeners from going there to spend bags of cash on tacky, inane nonsense. They don't care a jot about her life, i'm sure, but they do care about money. Countries like that will always bend their 'high morals' for a bit of tidy cash.

Vegas is another example. Run by Mormons who live by a strict moral code; don't drink, don't use sex workers, and don't gamble.. quite happy to actively encorage it and profit from it tho.
