To think that these are likely stolen goods?

Browsing Vinted this morning, saw a BNWT shirt I liked, looked at seller's other items as they had bundle discounts on. Every single item (200+) is BNWT from M&S, most current season (I was in the store this morning and I recognised several items). Not outlet, not seconds. Prices around half RRP.

I'm not going to buy from them but it's got me wondering if there could be a legitimate explanation for where all the stock has come from, because my immediate thought was to wonder if it had been shoplifted.

YABU: there are legitimate explanations
YANBU: the likeliest explanation is that it's been stolen

Years ago someone I knew 👀 wasn't averse to buying perfume from the bloke who'd sell it out of a carrier bag in town. Can't do that now tho there's so many fakes! Shame 😂

one asked me last week if I wanted any and I said no mate got no cash and he said

I TAKE APPLE PAY 😂😂😂😂😂

I did notice that when M&S suspended online orders last year due to the cyber attack there seemed to be a lot of BNWT stock on Vinted all of a sudden. I'm absolutely convinced that in that case it was enterprising shoplifters filling a gap in the market.

I think you'll find, again, that it's surplus stock because M&S just wasn't selling anything at that time, and they donated it or sold it off cheap to the warehouses. If you could see the stock where I buy from, you'd be amazed.

As a Vinted seller, can I ask what the benefits are of being a pro seller?

Well we buy clothes to sell for profit so by default you have to be a pro seller. There are no benefits 🤣 but I do have submit a tax return!

I’m astonished people buy from Vinted. You have absolutely no idea where the stuff comes from and you have no idea where it’s stored etc. Mind you, I don’t have any interest in fashion and have a small amount of basic clothes that didn’t cost much. I have a tshirt on today that I bought 8 years ago. Cost per wear works out to about 1p.

What's wrong with second hand clothes? They can be washed.

hecalledmecaptain · 24/06/2026 15:15

I sell a lot on vinted. I buy bundles of returned stock. So often have loads of stuff that's bnwt and in season stuff. I certainly haven't stolen it!

Company's specialise in selling other companies returns. You can buy whole pallets full of returns from John Lewis, m&s etc. and smaller bundles of returns from Levis and Patagonia. Some need small repairs but lots are in pristine condition.

Not the point of the thread, but what does BNWT stand for?

Thank you! Saw it mentioned so many times on this thread and just couldn’t figure it out 🤣

wishingonastar101 · 24/06/2026 15:50

Of course there is loads of stolen stuff on vinted. I would say a lot of the bnwt cosmetics and perfume is stolen. easy to steal and high value.

OhTediosity · 24/06/2026 15:53

Thank you for the insights from the pro sellers. I'm sure you're doing just fine and don't need feedback but my naturally suspicious nature means I won't buy from sellers with a lot of BNWT stock. I might if there was a note in the seller profile about it being legitimately sourced customer returns (and I do realise that someone could fake this...).

Oh do you? I do the same (but not clothes!) and I didn't realised you have to be a pro seller 😬

Mumstheword1983 · 24/06/2026 16:27

I know someone that works for a retailer and buys the sale items heavily discounted then sells on eBay/Vinted. Could be similar?

Reigndee · 24/06/2026 16:28

One of my local charity shops gets overstock and returns from local High Street shops, they're supposed to cut the label in half to show its removed stock but most times they dont, sometimes the stuff they send is still being sold in store so could be a reseller. Also could be stolen of course, are all the sizes different or similar?

If you've made over £1000 you should be on a pro account and registered with hmrc to pay tax.

I'm registered with the HMRC to pay tax and have made over £1000. Vinted have never spoken to me about having a pro account though. Weird!

I only ever sell my own used clothes, kids books and toys. I've made 2.5k over the past 3 years but less than £1k each tax year. I've never been asked either. Should I worry? I've never even heard of Pro-seller. Is that if you run a business on Vinted?

Tel12 · 25/06/2026 16:51

People do buy items in bulk to resell. It would be incredibly stupid to be selling stolen goods from such a well known retailer on an open market place like vinted

oliviaAustin · 25/06/2026 17:08

There are tonnes of ways they could be doing this legitimately. Rag traders buying BNWT stuff at the end of sale seasons isn’t new.

No. The £1000 must be PROFIT not just £1000 total. If you spend £2000 on the items new and made £1000 back in sales it’s not profit.

Blingismything · 25/06/2026 17:45

Someone I know works for M&S and at the end of the sale they can buy the items for something like £1 each.

Minidollop · 25/06/2026 18:07

I know someone who is shocking at ordering online and forgetting the return deadline. So she sells on Vinted in an attempt to recoup some of the cost.
So there are legitimate reasons, as well as illegitimate ones.

Melonjuice · 25/06/2026 18:17

m&s when things don't get sold, do sell them onto third-party sellers. If it's not current stock, it's likely where it came from. marks and Spencer have very secure and stringent security checks for staff

Unless you need to be pro - don’t bother

You have to wait something like 30 days to get your funds and the buyer has all that time to report an issue!!! You have to be registered as a business and submit that info to Vinted so you have to do accurate accounts each year to submit to hmrc. You have to accept returns for any reason & the buyer has up to ?30 days to make that decision

if you are reselling then yes you absolutely must register but otherwise stay private seller

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 25/06/2026 21:18

I suspect it's even worse than a shoplifter, for over 200 items, that's got to be organised stock stealing (back of the lorry) type situation. You can also normally tell if they're lots of different sizes too, it's unusual to have a bnwt size 20 and a bnwt size 8 I would think.....
