AIBU to think school closures ignore parents' work commitments?

AIBU to think that the school doesn’t take much account of parents’ need to work? Primary school have just announced they won’t be opening for the rest of the week, but it’s OK because they’ll be sending us online work for us to do with the children, and whilst they are sorry they have had to cancel sports day we shouldn’t be too upset because they’ve have rescheduled it for a couple of weeks time. Like, I totally get they have to put the safety of the children first and if it’s too hot it’s too hot, but what do they think I’m
doing when the kids are at school, preparing beautiful dinners, ensuring the craft box is topped up, pining wistfully for the moment they come home? FFS, my job obviously comes second to my children and of course I’ll cancel planned surgeries and clinics where I need to. It’s not the emergency that bothers me, it’s the blasé way in which it’s communicated as though it’s a
minor inconvenience, not a major major f’ing headache with serious second and third order effects.

Hold on, you expect outside sports clubs and music teachers who are paid to go and do lessons after-school to be childcare and never cancel? They offer a educational service not chiodcare.For god sake parent, they are your responsibility. It's parent with your attitude that make companies stop going into schools because parents expect more than they offer which is education

As other people have said, during COVID school were asked to consider working parents. If we have an increase in these weather situations and schools are unable to get a/c then I can forsee schools only being open for keyworkers.

After school club it's called . The kids are picked up ( from various schools) and take to ASC.

They don't call the after school club wraparound

Schools won't only be open for key workers again, that is not an option as everyone needs an education . The school communicated it perfectly, they said the school was closing due to the heat. This is for the benefit of kids and staff. Or are teachers not entitled to safe work environments? I see they have to only do what works for working parents even when it puts them as risk? 😡 Teachers have a right to a safe working environment no matter what working parents think.

During the heatwave? No other schools have given the option of picking them up early and kept others stay because the building won't be full and can move to cooler parts of the school. This applied to everybody not just keyworkers.

And any other parent who wanted to keep their child in school during the heatwave. There fixed it for you. A quick Google tells me key workers weren't prioritised during the heatwave and neither should they be. COVID has proved only prioriting keyworkers was wrong.

School is not childcare.

That's one school. If was a parent at that school I would be making a complaint. Keyworkers children should not get priority over other chiidren.

IIRC, during Covid, didn't virtually everyone qualify as a Key Worker? Some schools had almost full classes once you factored in vulnerable kids too,

I think you need to go back and read the post I was replying to.

Plus after school wrap around which is child care, not after school clubs which is sport etc. After school wrap around care can still ask for parents to pick up without notice in an emergency like weather, illness etc because they are not the parents, they offer a service which has terms and conditions. They have every right to cancel in an emergency like a red weather warning.
