To think Andy Burnham is smug and presumptuous. Just that really and I have no particular political preference, disillusioned with the lot!

To think Andy Burnham is smug?

Well, to be fair, he has got himself very rapidly re-elected back into Westminster and the 'top job' with all it's many lucrative benefits is within his sights, so perhaps it's only natural to feel a little smug? It's clear he is an individual who likes power.

@Sensiblesal We’ve already had this conversation. No you don’t vote for the party you vote for the person. You may THINK, that you vote for the party. You may vote thinking it’s for a party. But. You. Are. Wrong.
The fact other people are wrong as well doesn’t make you right.

You say the position is being ‘bought’ implying financial corruption. Who has bought it? What money changed hands? Or is that just another inaccurate, insult you’re throwing out?

You say the leader should stay for a 4 year term. Parliament has a maximum 5 year term, we don’t have fixed terms. We don’t directly elect our leaders. If you want a new GE every time a PM resigns it would cost the country a fortune, increase political instability and you would absolutely get higher taxes.

That is true but you vote for the person based on their manifesto which usually that of their party. Independents can obviously come up with whatever they like.

in recent years there has been a disconnect between policy and manifestos which mean they aren’t worth the paper they are printed on. I feel this has to change as we can’t go on like that once elected a government can just do the opposite of what they promised.

@midwalker he wasn’t arrogant he was correct. He understands the political system we have in the U.K. - unlike you. On the whole I’m quite glad our potential PM has more understanding than some MN posters.

He understands the political system we have in the U.K.

I've just checked - Andy Burnham tweeted # GeneralElectionNow in response to Kay Burley's tweet on the Tory leadership race in 2022. She posted;

Worth noting only 0.3% of the UK electorate will decide the next PM...
What do you think?

No doubt Burnham is a hypocrite and champagne socialist, just like Starmer.

Who are you to say the conversation has been had?!

I live in an area where quite frankly Fred or Rose West could stand for X party and they would get voted in regardless. So no, in my experience what you say is incorrect.

I won’t bother replying to anything else you said cos the conversations ‘been had’ & you aren’t interested in others opinions you just want to bark at people.

Here's Suzanne Moore's take on the situation:

Greenleavesandsunshine · 22/06/2026 15:31

@mellongooseWhat cronyism? Where is that? He’s given contracts to his friends ? When was that?

Or do you mean one faction of a political party, has done - what ALL political parties do - and said they would support him as candidate for Labour leader. Similar to when Biden withdrew from the presidency or when Thatcher stood down as leader. It’s politics.

It’s an old boys network. Ask his supporters what he stands for in different issues and they will all tell you something different.

They wanted the person. We lowly voters don’t get to ask a question or challenge. It stinks and it is undemocratic.

At least with the Tories, there was a contest, an exchange of ideas. Painful for them, but the electorate could view and the members could vote.

Also, Boris went straight to the polls.

I despair of the quality of political debate on here and the lack of underatanding of how our political system works. I'm so glad we don't have a presidential system given some of the ridiculous comments about Andy Burnham. Look how well that's going for the USA

And yet Andy Burnham himself called for a GE in 2022 when the Tories were swapping leaders. Maybe he doesn’t understand how our political system works? He certainly didn’t seem to know what our fiscal rules are when he was interviewed on Newsnight.

Sewciopath · 22/06/2026 15:53

rogueone · 22/06/2026 15:10

It’s shocking , he has no mandate and based on returning as an MP after being the mayor for years , he thinks he can skip in and be PM. Don’t think he will be any better than Keir , he is also for the north - not quite sure what that means as he is meant to represent the country

It's about time tbh because I don't think any other recent PM even knew where the North was.

Could be worse, he could be a Wildling from “beyond the wall” (Scotland).

Andy B is 2 things that Mumsnet hates. Northern and Catholic.

I’m northern and Catholic - am I allowed to say I don’t like him? I havent formed a view yet to be honest but would be good to know I have permission should the need arise!

He does look impermeable and not very bright. I’m holding out zero hope.

Considering sir Keir Is phenomenally bright and a shockingly bad job starting to question whether intelligence is required for the job?

WitchesCauldron · 22/06/2026 16:11

Whataflippincircus · 22/06/2026 13:38

Jesus fucking Christ! Stop the insults. Smug, not very bright, a scarecrow, give the man a chance FFS.

No thanks- he's proven himself to be a backstabbing chancer.

Sometimes political debate in this country is like watching Chimpazees chucking shit at each other, at the Zoo.

Hyperbole, name calling, and screeching over the Internet. How are we ever going to crawl out the gutter.

Justusethebloodyphone · 22/06/2026 16:18

I voted partly for stability after the Tory fiasco….sigh.

Also voted for kier Starmer (represented by my MP etc etc). I didn’t vote for Andy Burnham.

As long as it isn't based on his untrustworthy eyebrows 😂

MrsHero · 22/06/2026 16:29

I agree, and unfortunately I don't think it will take him very long to realise that once in office, the press will very quickly switch from treating him like the messiah, to hunting for the next headline on the never ending news cycle, and probably the next PM.

Now it's been demonstrated how quickly Labour MPs will turn on their own, why stop at only 3 PMs per Parliament, as per the Conservatives!?

This is always such a reductive and ridiculous argument.

I didn’t like Boris Johnson. He was white and Southern and male and posh.

I didn’t like Kwarzi Kartang. He was black and male and southern.

I don’t like Angela Raynor. She is female and white and northern and working class.

And so on and so on.

So do I dislike all male, female, posh, working class, white and black people from the north and south? No of course not.

its almost always just a way to put down debate without any actual arguments.

People won’t be satisfied unless the next Labour leader is the second coming of Jesus and even then they will find him wanting.

Aye lass, everything what we know up north comes from pigeons and whippets. It’s difficult without electricity and we can’t learn owt when down t’pit, but we’re getting there.

I heard we would be getting the leccy once the latest scrofula epidemic is under control.

Shall we let the man have five minutes in office before we start tearing him to shreds?

He needs to call a GE NOW!!!
Good to know that even though he isn't a candidate ATM that the hate is commencing. What do people actually want?

All that love thy neighbour and feeding thousands? That can't be good. But we won't need the NHS as he will be curing the sick. Don't know what the policy is on IHT but we may have to render unto Caesar what is due.
