To think Andy Burnham is smug?

To think Andy Burnham is smug and presumptuous. Just that really and I have no particular political preference, disillusioned with the lot!

He was our mayor and wasted a phenomenal amount of money on a clean air zone that never happened.
and then decided he didn’t want that job anymore, when something more powerful came along.., he is all about himself and his power.
i would never vote for him to be PM

No. I’m also in Manchester. He didn’t come up with CAZ: the Tories did. He got us a load of extra money during Covid too. And I’m a Starmer supporter.

Greenleavesandsunshine · 22/06/2026 18:54

@BlueMindedHow has he forced anybody? Violence at the by election? Has money changed hands? What was dirty or underhand! All rules were followed, it was above board. I know which cabinet ministers spoke to Starmer and who didn’t. He made his intentions very clear in several interviews throughout his campaign and as far back as the Labour Party conference. He has done absolutely nothing unconstitutional.
What you appear to be objecting to is parliamentary democracy.

ServietteUnion · 22/06/2026 18:54

A bit of smugness goes with the territory of being charismatic, which is what Starmer has just lost his job for not being. So make up your mind, everyone. And YABU, OP. Let's at least give him a nanosecond to show us what he can do in the job before slagging him off.

ramonaquimby · 22/06/2026 18:54

concertinacornflake · 22/06/2026 18:35

How long was Starmer in the cabinet before he became PM? And Blair?

Not sure
but this thread is about Burnham
anyways, I'm educated, I read stuff, I'm interested in politics and not a thicko
people have different opinions and that is OK.
though I do despair of U.K. politics of recent past and future

Newbie8918 · 22/06/2026 18:58

He was the MP who called for justice for the families of those who died in the Hillsborough disaster. He went against the establishment to expose various levels of corruption. I’m happy to give him a chance!

You don't think there was anything " off" about he got into this position, because on paper he followed the rules? An mp gave up his seat to force the by election lest we forget. Why? He just didn't fancy the job anymore? Nope. All well orchestrated manoeuvres to pivot Andy into the top job. I don't know how you're not seeing it.

BadBadCat · 22/06/2026 19:00

ramonaquimby · 22/06/2026 18:32

He was Health Secretary for less than a year

Longer than most ministers seem to last in any role in the cabinet in recent times!

Clavinova · 22/06/2026 19:01

Greenleavesandsunshine · 22/06/2026 17:00

Ahhh @Clavinovahas arrived. He said there should be a GE not why. He may be hypocrite or he may have just want a GE to get rid of the Tories. The same way you probably wanted a GE last week, and want one this week because you want the government gone.
My point was he understand the system - he does.

He said there should be a GE not why

Burnham specifically retweeted and replied to this tweet;

Worth noting only 0.3% of the UK electorate will decide the next PM...

He didn't post a stand-alone tweet.

The same way you probably wanted a GE last week

Different circumstances last week - Starmer had not resigned - whereas Johnson had already resigned when Burnham tweeted in July 2022.

Blair was in the shadow cabinet for 9 years and spent many years planning the New Labour movement. He was extremely well prepared when he came into government.

Starmer is just not worth comparing. He has never had political instincts, many thousands of words have been written on the subject to date.

What I can't get my head round is Burnham failed to win people over twice in leadership contests a decade ago hence buggering off to Manchester. Yet suddenly, he's the best we've got. Really? I'm tempted to think we're just at a really low point in the calibre of our politicians.

Shadow cabinet is a talking shop with no responsibility. If you are saying that is worth more than being a minister and a mayor then you are really just on the wind up

Greenleavesandsunshine · 22/06/2026 19:07

@BlueMinded Nope, nothing off. We have a system, he made a plan and executed it. That’s what good politicians do. I can’t see why you find this surprising or extraordinary. We have a parliamentary democracy, there are rules and systems to remove a PM. AB utilised these rules, no force, no illegality, no money changed hands. We all know what was done and how it was done.
You don’t agree with it and that’s fine, you believe it should have been done in a different way that’s fine. But you can’t tell me one thing that wasn’t clear and above board - it was transparent. Tell me what rules were broken to make it ‘off’.

Greenleavesandsunshine · 22/06/2026 19:09

@Clavinova did you want a GE last week? Probably.
AB may well call a snap election, he’s an idiot if he does but stranger things have happened.

Good shadow cabinet ministers work hard to understand their brief. They will have intimate knowledge of the workings of Westminster and preparing for government. Well, a good shadow cabinet minister would do all those things, there's no guarantee of course.

Clavinova · 22/06/2026 19:12

Oh, this is fun, looking back at what Labour politicians said in 2022 - Keir Starmer, October 2022 when Liz Truss resigned;

“The Tories cannot respond to their latest shambles by yet again simply clicking their fingers and shuffling the people at the top without the consent of the British people,” he said. “They do not have a mandate to put the country through yet another experiment; Britain is not their personal fiefdom to run how they wish.

Will it be a Labour fiefdom or a Labour serfdom?

Wow - he called for justice for victims of a disaster. So brave!

And he only did that AFTER Liverpool fans booed him for not doing anything for the victims of that disaster.

AmberSpy · 22/06/2026 12:29

Shall we let the man have five minutes in office before we start tearing him to shreds?

He isn't even there yet. Though he and his cronies obviously thinks he is. I reckon he has a big shock coming at the next general election. Makerfield is not the whole country

Greenleavesandsunshine · 22/06/2026 19:14

@Clavinova can you try to make a point of you own and not just cut and paste please? You’ll never get your A Level if you just plagiarise. Does AI help these days? I remember your frantic cut and paste arguments from Brexit.

Regardless of whether we individually disagree on the process, the voting public will eventually have their say. I just honestly can't see it going down well. People feel deceived. Used. Manipulated.

Greenleavesandsunshine · 22/06/2026 19:16

@JoyousOpalLemurAnd he went to Anfield and stood in front of the fans and cried. He could have hidden like every other politician before him and didn’t. I have some big issues with AB on policy but what he did for the Hillsborough families was very brave.

Yes I remember this! He had this fake/pained/constipated look on his face as he was getting jeered and booed at. Would he have pushed so hard if he hadn’t been heckled? Probably not.

Greenleavesandsunshine · 22/06/2026 19:21

@BlueMinded That’s the point “people feel” it’s all about the feelz. People think they vote for a party, people feel it is wrong, people think Starmer is boring, people vote for Labour because they wanted a change.

Perhaps we should try to understand our political system and pay attention. The truth is we have no money, we need to spend less and save. We need to pay off our debt. It will hurt and it will take time. Different ways of addressing this issue, but that’s the bottom line. People won’t like it because it will feel hard, because it will be hard. As a nation we need to stop complaining about how bad we feel, and face reality head on.

Greenleavesandsunshine · 22/06/2026 19:22

Blimey, you are now sounding like a party political broadcast. Have a read of today's guardian's piece on ' where did it all go wrong ' , for some insight on the public's " feelz ".

If you didn't understand my post you are clearly lacking a sense of humour. Are you Keir Starmer by any chance? Or Andy Burnham's wife? She looks severe.
