To still be upset about this dreadful driver?

Netcurtainnelly · 21/06/2026 18:37

Mr net Curtain and I were driving down a country road on Friday and realised we were being tailgated.
I looked round and the driver was featuring us to go faster. We did not as we were already driving to the speed of the road

We just ignored him and carried on. Next thing he or someone behind him starts blasting the horn furiously obviously trying to get us to go faster
We did not eventually the driver turned off

It really unnerved me and made me nervous. I can't believe that people are prepared to cause a crash on a road just because they want you to hurry up.

Has this happened to anyone else? have experienced tailgaters before but never someone blasting their horn etc. So dangerous.

A rural b road with a national is exactly the road I’m on about where you may have to drive slower. Not enough deaths have occurred there to lower the speed limit. We are saying the same thing.

You said it was rarely unsafe to drive at speed limit. I’m absolutely not saying the same as you.

CombatBarbie · 22/06/2026 17:38

I live rurally, our road is a 60 but ive been behind many many drivers doung 30 as I am assuming they are are unfamiliar with it. On 17 miles theres only 3 clear view points to pass but in the summer it is very busy with motorbikes and classic cars. It can be infuriating especially when there are several unofficial type laybys they can pull into to let everyone else pass.

Fuck sake. You’re just being contrary now. I literally said except for the type of road you’re describing but whatever you want.

Caffeinepleasenow · 22/06/2026 17:43

Maybe it was an emergency. The last time my DH used the horn was when I had a baby's head crowning in the passenger seat!

Doubt that very much. Anyway does that make it right to put anitge driver under pressure and possibly cause an accident

Do they really want to crash?

I don't think an emergency is that unlikely of a scenario. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt anyway. You could've pulled over and let them pass instead.

Ahh OP, I once posted a similar thread and my replies were pretty much the same as this with loads of people accusing me of being this person that creeps around at way under the speed limit which is just not the case.

It astounds me on an almost daily basis some of the driving I see around me. People just do not give a toss about others, they are only concerned about themselves and reaching their own destination as quickly as possible with no regard for who they put at risk to achieve that.

On another note, I was leaving an event car park recently and people were just pushing their way out with just no decency at all. Some people have such an ‘I’m alright Jack’ attitude and that’s not how I like to conduct myself. Being within their car gives them a boldness as well.

I’m sorry you’re still feeling shaken by this. No one should be displaying threatening behaviour on the roads.

Thanks. Yes lots of people are speeding and tailgating so impatient.

No one wants to ever ease down and let people out either it's disgusting. People would rather put their foot down than ease down.
If the thought of causing an accident, possibly killing people isn't enough to stop them, then they shouldn't be on the road

The honking of the horn etc sounds very extreme, but since you won’t be clear about the speed you were doing, I’m imagining you trundling along at 20mph on a clear road with a 60mph limit. In which case YOU are more likely to cause an accident by frustrating other road users and causing them to have to overtake you.

Give some facts on your speed etc for a fairer view on whether YOU were being unreasonable and incited some bad behaviour from others.

MabelAnderson · 22/06/2026 17:51

WhatAMarvelousTune · 21/06/2026 18:46

Obviously it does not.

Even if I’m stuck behind a very slow person, I don’t tailgate and start blasting my horn at them.

I live very rurally. Most local lanes are NSL , but it would be total insanity to drive them at 60. Narrow single lane roads with sharp, tricky bends, limited visibility ahead, often livestock crossing or in the road, cyclists and walkers etc.
A speed limit of 60 doesn’t mean that you are driving too slowly if you are doing 20, if the road isn’t safe much over that.

Sharptonguedwoman · 22/06/2026 18:01

bananaapplepears · 21/06/2026 18:43

Obviously it depends on how fast you were going.

OP says at the speed of the road. Guessing 30 in a 30 mph zone?

Laura95167 · 22/06/2026 18:18

If i was doing the speed limit and they did this id ease of and slow down..

Flossy1985 · 22/06/2026 18:28

I know this feeling up until recently I lived in the country and where I was the roads were super winding. Had one guy drive up my backside all the way home and my son was only 10 month old. I stopped just before home and gave him a right mouthful (I had a badge saying baby on board) clearly has these superpowers where you can see round really tight bends! Also warned him I had cameras watching everything soon bloody backed off then.

Shame I didn't have a camera recording it all. I'd have reported him.

I failed my driving test for going at 40 in a 50, so clearly it does matter.

Obviously I am not saying that it is always safe to be going at 50 in a 60.

What is 'obvious' about this? No one knows you.

Rpop · 22/06/2026 19:48

Sirzy · 21/06/2026 19:09

It may be frustrating driving behind people who are driving very slowly (if that is the case here) but it doesn’t justify acting in a dangerous intimidating manner.

To be honest someone driving very slowly says to me they aren’t very confident diving so I leave an even bigger gap than normal!

Exactly. It is incredibly frustrating being behind a slow driver but they could be really old / just a poor driver / have a problem - and driving in the only way that is safe for them (that said, this slow type of driver often drives in the middle of the road and stays at 28mph in a 20 zone - questioning how safe they are to be on the road). However, I always drive a safe distance behind them. It’ll only add about 30 seconds to my journey time.

Even if you drive much faster over an 100 mile journey, the amount of travelling time saved is minimal (assuming you weren’t going at lightening speed).

LightningTree · 22/06/2026 19:49

I had an idiot behind me blast their horn because I was waiting for a safe place to pass a horse!

Afterthefact · 22/06/2026 20:05

Idiots have done this for 20 years & every year more idiot drivers do it, it's part of their every day normal driving habits - I'm surprised you haven't noticed before but there's always a first time - yes it's upsetting, unnerving etc etc but nobody ever does anything about it. You could spend money on front & rear dashcams to protect yourself & your safety whilst driving but that won't stop them. Every journey we go on no matter how short there's always dicks driving behind. I used to turn my mirror down so they couldn't intimidate me cos they do it for a reaction or they're just plain stupid.

PeoplesNet · 22/06/2026 20:06

IglesiasPiggl · 21/06/2026 18:42

I hate driving on country roads for exactly this reason. It's ludicrous that some of them have a 60mph limit in my opinion.

Yeah, didn't a woman accidentally kill two of her children driving 'too fast' (aka the 60 mph speed limit) down a country road? Not too long ago but I forget the details.

We need another sign for 'up to 60 but drive sensibly'.

And OP: always pull over and let them pass. Does you and them a huge favour.

thefourthbeatle · 22/06/2026 19:42

Apologies, I assumed that no one who was able to pass a driving test would be stupid enough to think that it is always safe to drive at the speed limit.

We have one. This is literally what the NSL sign means.

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 22/06/2026 20:49

The number of people in this thread that think NSL on country roads means you can definitely drive at 60 😂

It's funny when tourists make videos for social media about this, less so when it's people who have lived here all their lives....

Rpop · 22/06/2026 21:03

CoffeeCantata · 22/06/2026 11:38

Two issues here - maybe OP was going 'too slowly', but we can't judge because we don't know what the road was like and the general conditions.

But nothing excuses dangerous, bullying behaviour which breaks the rules about stopping distances and harrasses another driver. It's just wrong in any circumstances and could cause an accident.

The advice from driving instructors about tailgaiting is to slow down slightly.

All roads are different. I've been on some country roads with a high speed limit which consist of a series of blind corners with high hedges. I drove to work for years on one like this and if I'd been doing the speed limit and not hugging the hedges, I'd have had a prang every week because of oncoming idiots in the middle of the road doing 50 round the blind corners.

Absolutely - to everything you said.

Driving instructors do say that you should slow down slightly with tailgaters.

obviously if they were mental and aggressive and it was possible to pull in to let them past me, then I would. But I’m not speeding up to allow them to break the speed limit.

oh dear. I honestly think a small minority are too stupid to interpret this sensibly. clearly this scenario would be better with no sign.

And I bet it was an Audi driver. Whenever there’s a twat driving up my ass, urging me to go faster despite my going at the limit, it’s always an Audi.

I’m a very careful and considerate Audi driver. I think you mean black BMW or white Tesla.
