AIBU to consider Mounjaro at BMI 27 to lose two stone?

Lorrrrrre · 21/06/2026 13:05

With the likes of MedExpress now offering mounjaro to anyone with a BMI of 25+, WIBU to take it? I am 5ft 6, 12 stone, so not hugely overweight. I’d like to lose 2 stone so I can be comfortably in the healthy category for BMI. I also want to get a handle on it before it spirals out of control. I had my baby 3 years ago and just can’t shift the weight, finding time to exercise etc is really difficult and I find I have no willpower and snack a lot on bad food as I’m always rushing around. I’m hoping mounjaro will kick start better habits for me.

My family and partner are firmly against it, saying it’s lazy to use it and should only be for very obese people. My friends who have used it themselves are much more supportive. I’d have to hide it from everyone apart from a select few friends if I did take it as everyone would be so judgemental.

Why is is this an AIBU? If you want to take it, take it.
Why ask a bunch of strangers?

Because her nearest and dearest have told her it's a daft idea and she's hoping the bunch of strangers will come along and tell her that 'yes, deceiving your DH and your mum and spending hundreds of pounds on a powerful drug because you can't be arsed to plan and eat a healthy diet is a brilliant plan'.

0livetree · 21/06/2026 13:26

Such a strange time we are living in. Imagine people a hundred years ago being told that people in the future would take a drug to stop them eating so much

Because I’m hoping to hear from people who have actual experience of it rather than my family and husband who have no experience and no knowledge other than just saying it’s something that lazy fat people take?

As soon as you stop, you'll put the weight back on and more, unless you control your eating. You'll lose muscle and possible bone mass, if you don't exercise. So, no, you shouldn't take drugs, you should sort yourself out, so you age well.

Ponoka7 · 21/06/2026 13:31

Just to clarify, I've discussed WLI with my consultants, over the last year. The loss of muscle is the thing that concerns the medical community. It puts people at risk of falls etc. You aren't overweight enough that the possible benefits of losing weight outweighs the risks. Are you prepared to stay on them for life?

PancakeCloud · 21/06/2026 13:32

If you can afford it and understand the risks and benefits and still want to do it I don’t think you should worry about what your family thinks and make a decision for yourself.

Daschy16 · 21/06/2026 13:32

OP, you will probably get more measured responses on the Weight Loss Injections chat area, rather than AIBU.

My friends who have / are taking them aren’t on them for life - they’ve been able to shift their thinking patterns and portions accordingly thanks to mounjaro.

Can this be counteracted with weight training?

YABU

If you want to lose weight eat less and exercise more

perimenopoppet · 21/06/2026 13:42

Posting in AIBU was a brave choice.

If you had asked this a year ago then accessing MJ would have involved lying to a prescriber at your BMI. Now it does not. Therefore it’s a legal and valid choice that is yours to make.

Could you do it without, yes probably with a tonne of effort, however there is more and more evidence that these medicines do a whole lot more than just suppress appetite. life is hard, these medications can support with making it a little less hard.

I feel no guilt or less value as a person in ridding myself of my perimenopausal 4 stone weight gain in just 9months last year, and now happily back to my normal pre 40s sized body, maintaining on a microdose. I am so much happier in my own skin, enjoying eating a healthy balanced diet in sensible portions, exercising plenty to keep my muscles from wasting away. It’s not either/or. I could stop but haven’t yet as I want to be absolutely sure I won’t pile fat back on, plus there are so many additional benefits. Pop over to the WLI board and have a read.

YANBU to make either decision but it’s your choice alone.

BigSkies2022 · 21/06/2026 13:50

Op I don’t agree that WLI are for lazy people, However, if you don’t get a handle on the habits that made you fat in the first place, then you will regain the weight after coming off WLIs. In that respect, they are like every other weight loss regime. You say you don’t plan enough to eat well and you don’t have time to exercise. Do you believe that WLIs will miraculously improve your planning skills and time management? Up your motivation to exercise and choose better foods?

In your position, I’d work on meal planning (if you eat meat, it’s easy: just loads of roast chicken, veg, salads, eggs, low fat proteins like turkey mince, cottage cheese and Greek yoghurt) and increasing your walking each day, body weight exercises daily and heavy weights twice a week. Weigh your food, track your calories and be consistent. Aim for a pound loss per week.

Oh, and tell your family that only lazy people sit around waiting for the wife and mum to shop and cook food and henceforth, these are the meals you will be producing and anyone who wants something different can get it themselves, including doing the shop.

Maybe change your habits first, see how weight loss goes?

I have done this many times in the past and lost maybe half a stone, but I always end up falling off the wagon again… once I have a bad meal or bad food I just cannot seem to get my head back into consistently eating healthy again. I enjoy healthy foods too, it’s so frustrating x

When your baby grows up what would you advise them if they need to lose 2 stone?

Secretly inject drugs?

Revise diet and exercise for a healthier way of living?

"Bad meal"

"Bad food"

Do you have an eating disorder?

Because if so, that puts a completely different slant on this thread.

might have been better to ask on WLI threads? I took it at BMI 27 with a history of up yo yo dieting. I love that it just restricts my appetite enough for me to maintain my weight. I take 2mg a week.

How long did it take you to get to healthy weight? Did you take 2.5mg or more per week?

No - but everyone knows what bad food is - crisps, pizza, chocolate, basically shite UPFs.

Well, there’s your issue isn’t it? Your ‘all or nothing’ attitude where you are waiting for the slip up’ to abandon the whole enterprise.

If you eat a big meal on Friday night, so what? Go straight back on your plan the following morning. Don’t say to yourself, ‘Oh, I’ve blown it now I might as well gorge on all the stuff I want over the weekend and start again on Monday.’

Just to reassure you op my understanding is that the muscle loss happens when you do “regular” weight loss as well, it’s not linked to the drug its linked to weight loss. It’s also unlikely to be an issue with just two stone. Strength training is always a great idea though.

Why don't you just take up weight training from the beginning? You're going to struggle even more to lift weights after you lose muscle and bone density to these injections. Use the money you'd spend on injections and pay for a personal trainer.

I think the injections are fine if you've exhausted all other avenues and are obese but you clearly have disordered eating tendencies and I don't think it's your best bet.

Surely anyone who is obese will have disordered eating??
