Getting up early is actually good isn’t it?

I love a lie in at the weekend. Im up early during the week and often have broken sleep thanks to my toddler waking in the night so it really refreshes me to have a lie in. However if I get up any later than 9am I really feel like the day has gotten away from me and I’m rushing to get all the things done that I need to. Which is silly really as it’s only 2 hours later than I’d usually be up for work!
Got up early with the little one this morning so Dh could have a Father’s Day lie in and actually it does feel really good to be up and on early. Already got some washing done and planning to get out with the dogs and get lots done.
Hard to decide what’s best between a lovely lie in and feeling productive and smug because im up with the lark. Which do you prefer?

I have to disagree but I'm a chronic insomniac.

SinicalMe · 21/06/2026 08:23

What time is early op? 5/6/7am? Your early might be different to my early.

Statsquestion1 · 21/06/2026 08:23

Yes!! Yesterday I was up and had my workout by 8:30. Im awake for 6:30 every morning but I’m in bed by 9:30.

Firewife2 · 21/06/2026 08:24

I woke up after 9 yesterday and managed to put a wash on.

Elisabeth3468 · 21/06/2026 08:24

I need a lot of sleep so would take the lie in. But honestly I've lost the ability to lie in since I had kids. Like I've tried before (partner takes kids down early) but then I can't fall back to sleep and can hear the kids. They don't usually wake till 7-730 though which is a very reasonable wake up time

youalright · 21/06/2026 08:25

In the summer I love it

Starlightexpresss · 21/06/2026 08:26

I always get up around 6am and love that peaceful time of day. There is such a peaceful relaxed vibe and I like to walk the dog, get my running in and out of the way so I can enjoy the rest of the day- bliss

dailychallenge · 21/06/2026 08:26

I have always been a morning person and awake between 5 am and 5.30. I love a Sunday as it’s the day I make coffee, back into bed and read or mumsnet/internet. I am on my second coffee, house is silent. Love it.

I mean, obviously it’s still possible. I just find that the later I get up the more stressed I feel as the day goes on because I have less time to get all the stuff done.

6:30 this morning whereas if I’d had a lie in it would be more like 9am. I’m sure I’ll be flagging later.

Me too! I was up at 10am and managed to get two lots on!

Doje · 21/06/2026 08:29

Yes definitely!! The morning is the best part of the day even if it's just to sit and have a quiet cup of coffee.

Looks like I'll need to be up and out before 6 this week to walk the dog early because of the weather and I'm actually really looking forward to it.

Only downside is feeling like you're done with the day and want to chill out by 9am as you've already got so much done. Quite often I've done the dishwasher, two loads of laundry and walked the dog by the time DH gets out of bed.

Between DS and my own inability to sleep I class 7.30 as a lie in so I have learnt to love early mornings and getting things done before work!

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 21/06/2026 08:31

I agree with you. I sleep badly and previously always used to lie in but would feel sluggish and that half the day was wasted. Not such an issue when I was a SAHM but now working full time and life is busier so if I lay in I end up somehow feeling stressed and agitated and that I haven’t made the most of the weekend.

I prefer to try and be up earlier and then enjoy feeling like I can relax more later in the day.

OvernightBloats · 21/06/2026 08:31

Getting up early after a really deep, long sleep is the best.

Getting up early after a broken, interrupted short few hours of sleep is the worst!

But you can't beat the peacefulness of early mornings, the early morning light and being productive early on so you can relax later.

PersephoneParlormaid · 21/06/2026 08:32

I’ve never been a lie in person but having kids and peri means I’m often awake around 5/6am, so take the lie in if you can.

KateSixer · 21/06/2026 08:32

I also think there is a positive correlation between good mental health and getting up early.

Of course I can't prove that but it's something I believe. Someone will be along to say correlation is not causation. So I will save them the trouble!

Duvetdayforme · 21/06/2026 08:32

I’m a lark and love the early mornings. Best time of the day.

Itsmeanttobesummer · 21/06/2026 08:35

I was thinking the exact same thing OP. I really suffer with my sleep so don’t like to get up too early on a weekend if I can help it but this morning, I woke up needing a wee at 7.15, couldn’t get back to sleep & I already know I’ll have a much more productive day. Like you, if I wake/ get up at 9, by the time I’ve lazed about for an hour or so drinking tea and then showering, getting ready, it’s easy 11/11.30 by the time we can get out anywhere and if it’s a really busy day; trying to cram everything in and running about like a headless chicken.

Basically, yes. It’s hard to decide between giving your body the rest it needs but also not rushing about and feeling stressed as you’re on the back foot of a morning!

MacDot · 21/06/2026 08:35

I love getting up early. I’m not always productive but I enjoy sitting and drinking tea in peace before everyone else wakes up. On weekends at this time of year I love going for a walk before they get up, I’m usually out by 6, it’s such a nice time of day to be outside.

Yes this is exactly it! It’s not just the getting up later it’s the time I take actually waking up properly, having a coffee, getting ready etc. Half the day has gone then and I’m chasing my tail. It’s also just a nice peaceful time of the day.

For a couple of years I've lost the ability to sleep through the night. l will fall asleep but guarantee I'll be awake between 3 and 5. I usually do go back to sleep but then DHs alarms goes off at 6:30.
So I would love a lie in on the weekend but DS is usually awake by 7 so it's only an extra 30 minutes. I know what you mean about getting things done but I think I'd rather have a lie in (or just sleep through the night).

AnneLovesGilbert · 21/06/2026 08:50

God no, I don’t like mornings and if I was ever going to it would have happened by now. My DC aren’t early risers normally either thank goodness.

Fiddlesticks1 · 21/06/2026 08:52

Always up around 5am. I’m a morning person and can’t do late nights.

Yes 6:30 is a good time. I thought you were going to say 5am. Now that’s too early for me but between 6-7am is a good time to get up.
