I got to my early 40s without ever needing to claim but circumstances find me single and paying the lions share of child related outgoings.

I work full time on£31,000 and have found out this year thanks to applying that I get on average about £800 from UC. It has been an absolute life changer and will hopefully be able to afford a modest uk holiday actually during the summer holidays and pay the school back some debt im in for after school care.

So many benefits bashing threads so I just wanted to present another side that as a cash strapped mum of two who works full time, UC is making a positive difference to our life. I didn't even think id qualify!

Yes it probably is, considering the amount of time you all have on your hands fretting about someone getting benefits.

You're more to be pitied than scolded.

I'm sorry your income is low.

This is my third (brief) post on the subject.

who is the “I’m sorry your income is low” addressed to?

It's gone on for too long now though that it's become standard practice. Remember the controversial introduction of the Child Support Agency (CSA). Great in principle but badly thought through. It certainly scared the shit out of absent fathers.

This needs to make a strong return immediately.

I would know exactly what to do to make sure absent parents pay the required fees. Benefits will be directly paid from the parent who felt it was appropriate not to contribute to the child they made.

The UK has become softened into accepting this tomfoolery.

She implied your income was low in an attempt to mock you.

More of the same and worse to come if Starmer stands down tomorrow, as reported. Bankrupting the country and not taking the stock market seriously from Burnham. Aren't we lucky. 3 more years if this.

Sorry bankrupting not bankrolling - I wish.

Well, it's evident the country wants change. Hopefully, we'll see it.

Children are going to get dinner before 12 because they are starving. As someone who was a single mother, I never sent my child to school hungry so what is going on?

I support this but I think child neglect is going on here. However, children should not be punished because of parental neglect or lack of money.

BlueFahrenheit · 21/06/2026 17:34

It's a wonderful incentive, but it proves parents are being neglectful or cannot afford to feed their children.

Bunny65 · 21/06/2026 17:59

We don't know your circumstances but you say they have changed and the fact is work is so insecure these days - and relationships - that we cannot predict or plan for everything in life. You are working full time and you deserve help for your children's benefit. They will grow up and circumstances will change again. If a country can afford it then it is money well spent in terms of protecting health, physical and mental.

I'm happy for you,but it is my belief UC has to become less generous, or we will be completely bankrupted.People on £60,000 a year can still get UC which is ridiculous.

Can they? With no children in receipt of DLA? I can't believe this is true!

Either he paid tax or he didn't, it's not a grey area.

And it's well documented that he paid billions in tax.

It’s very grey actually. But you believe what you want.

It certainly does need to be capped and rethought.

Qb2654 · 21/06/2026 18:14

I get £2149 a month in UC, as well as £1200 a month in wages (0.5 contract). We are just fine.

Just to add to my post, I think there should be an overall cap too.

It seems to be those in work where UC is overly generous.

the companies should pay better wages

OP is on £31k, which is a reasonable salary by anyone’s measure.

Do you indeed? Because, funnily enough, that UC is the take home equivalent of ops salary, £31k per year…..
