Why do Brits boil everything ?

I’m European but not British. I have to say the way you guys cook (vegetables in particular) ie boiling everything) really isn’t for me. It just makes everything so bland even if you add butter and salt after. Carrots especially. Why not roast or lightly sautee in a pan with some olive oil? My husband boils everything. I’ve never seen anything like it. Why boil carrots? Same as ILs. The first time I met ILs we had poached chicken. It’s so weird to me. Is it a health thing?

These are EU figures so the UK is not included.

Thank you, I missed that.

Still not the fattest though. I mean we’re not doing well, by any stretch of the imagination, but not the worst. https://theweek.com/96429/ten-fattest-countries-in-europe

The rise in fast food outlets has been partly blamed for Britain's obesity epidemic

Ten fattest countries in Europe

New study shows UK has third-highest level of obesity among European nations

Why do Greek people not pay their taxes?
Why are Italians such bad drivers?
Why do the Swiss all do that yodelling thing?

etc etc

I absolutely LOVE this verse! Makes me 🤣🤣🤣 Such a pity that most people have no sense of humour about stereotypes these days! (A bit of gentle fun makes the world go round, and everyone knows, really, that not everyone in a given country is the same!)

I have no idea why MN allows these troll posts that are obvious lies and posted purely to piss people off

You’d think so but I’m not sure that’s the case:

For men, Romania and Poland lead with a 76% prevalence rate (of which 38% and 32% were living with obesity, respectively), closely followed by Croatia and Slovakia, each reporting a 74% prevalence (of which 35% and 31% were living with obesity, respectively).

For women, Ireland has the highest prevalence of overweight and obesity (62%, of which 28% were living with obesity) followed by Romania (58%, of which 32% were living with obesity), and Croatia (58%, of which 28% were living with obesity).

https://www.eufic.org/en/healthy-living/article/europes-obesity-statistics-figures-trends-rates-by-country#:~:text=Fig.,men%20in%20the%20EU%2C%202022.&text=For%20women%2C%20Ireland%20has%20the,%25%20were%20living%20with%20obesity).

I suspect that people who are obese are less likely to eat many vegetables boiled or otherwise. Boiled vegetables definitely do not cause obesity.

OP I like my vegetables fresh and clean tasting rather than smothered in oil, but each to their own. I tend to steam them though unless I’m in a hurry is that allowed?

It’s bizarre the chorus of mumsnet ‘I don’t boil my veg’ in response to the OP 🙈

Agree, it’s utterly mindless.

The British are deeply insecure about our food and cooking, thanks to our reputation. Evidence: See the scramble on this thread for most PP to say that they never, ever boil anything, it's a thing of decades ago, and that British homes are full of people roasting and sauteeing their veg of a weekday evening. I don't believe a word of it - I bet you're all boiling away! 🤣

Incandescentangel · 20/06/2026 16:29

I steam vegetables. And wouldn’t thank you for sautéed or roasted carrots. I prefer the lovely fresh flavours of steamed and not overcooked vegetables.

There’s a pub on Columbia Road in London that does the best roast I’ve ever tasted. I don’t know how they do it, rare roast beef, crunchy potatoes, cheesy leeks, all coming out as if they’ve just that second been cooked. A wander through the flower market on a Sunday morning then the best roast ever. Such a treat.

Well don't keep it to yourself. Which one??

boiled potatoes are just very unusual to me

Who wants to eat a roasted new potato with a salad?!

My kids like boiled peas and carrots. They don’t want hard veg in garlic roasted!

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 20/06/2026 16:31

We don’t.

Which pub?

Spargaszezon · 20/06/2026 16:33

I’m not British but I prefer boiling to using oil on everything.

I’m Scottish too. And from a poor family. We didn’t boil anything. Steamed mainly and roasted the rest of the time.

Where in Scotland are you from?

My dad always wanted the life bilt out everything. I remember one Christmas my mum steamed the wee baby carrots and the had a "bite" to them..dad refused them and said they were shite 😆 🤣

Could I ask any of you who steam your vegetables how you do it ? Do you have a steamer basket over a pan of hot water , or do you have electric steamers ?

Pickledonions12 · 20/06/2026 16:44

Lotc · 20/06/2026 11:39

I also don’t get why everything needs to be parboiled.

I also dont get why you seem to insist on generalising. Is it to help your weird stealth boast?

Waitingfordoggo · 20/06/2026 16:45

@Sahara123 I have one of those stacking thingies (tried to add a pic but I can’t find the share pic button). It has a saucepan at the bottom and then several ‘baskets’ that can be stacked on top of the pan.

Waitingfordoggo · 20/06/2026 16:45

I love Germany, and am properly Germanophilic, however - I cannot cope with mayonnaise on chips.

I thought that was a Belgian thing?

SerafinasGoose · 20/06/2026 16:46

I’m a roaster.

igelkott2026 · 20/06/2026 16:47

I like roast dinners and I cook one most Sundays. I do boil the vegetables but the broccoli sits on the top so it steams. And I don't like overcooked veg so it's definitely not mushy.

The only thing I parboil is potatoes before I roast them. If you don't, they get baked instead. Which is fine, but baked potatoes are different to roast potatoes!

DoraSpenlow · 20/06/2026 16:49

I tend to steam most veg and steer away from sauté-ing (frying) or roasting because that involves oil or fat which I avoid because of the calories.

This used to be the stuff of stand up comedy in the 1970s. Maybe update your material?
