Why do Brits boil everything ?

Lotc · 20/06/2026 11:33

I’m European but not British. I have to say the way you guys cook (vegetables in particular) ie boiling everything) really isn’t for me. It just makes everything so bland even if you add butter and salt after. Carrots especially. Why not roast or lightly sautee in a pan with some olive oil? My husband boils everything. I’ve never seen anything like it. Why boil carrots? Same as ILs. The first time I met ILs we had poached chicken. It’s so weird to me. Is it a health thing?

DH loathes roasted vegetables but he was out last night. I had a bag of Mediterranean vegetables charred in the freezer, so tossed them in a little oil and garlic in a plastic bag. Let them marinate for an hour, then roasted in the air fryer. They were delicious.

ToffeeCrabApple · 20/06/2026 16:02

I steam most green veg but have also roasted/sautéed things

I don't boil!

Lemonyyy · 20/06/2026 16:05

We don't. HTH.

boiled potatoes are just very unusual to me

Which is odd as most of my European friends and family eat a lot of boiled potatoes, in fact far more than I do in the UK. (Generalising on purpose here! But in reality I'm talking about northern Europe-family and friends in France, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Sweden, and Denmark).

muddyford · 20/06/2026 16:07

Last night I boiled potatoes and carrots, steamed cauliflower, microwaved frozen peas and air fried a salmon fillet. Made packet Hollandaise sauce. I'm 63. I don't want everything roasted or fried and now I'm widowed I can't see me using the oven very much.

Ginmonkeyagain · 20/06/2026 16:08

Boiled new potatoes with generous amounts of butter, salt and pepper and mint are lovely though!

I remember years ago a poster came here to do the usual Brit bashing and they were banging on about how fat we all are.

Then she slipped up with her name change and it turned out she was Maltese! 😬🤣

What does that mean, though? Are the Maltese fat??

LightningTree · 20/06/2026 16:09

whattheneighboursthink · 20/06/2026 13:08

Why on EARTH would you ruin the flavour of a good new potato by ROASTING it? You absolute heathen.

New potatoes are delicious brushed in garlic butter, wrapped in foil and roasted on the barbecue.

Your taste buds must be rather poor as they do taste ... Of Brussels sprouts. Roasted are nice too though.

Ha! Why so rude? This thread is really bringing out the worst in people. Of course they taste better and retain more vitamins like that. Boiled soft they're just soggy and wet.
Edit typo

I also don’t get why everything needs to be parboiled.

In the case of roast potatoes it is so the inside is fluffy while the outside is cris. Otherwise you get rubbery outside and possibly underdone inside.

MonetsLilac · 20/06/2026 16:11

DimwittedSkater · 20/06/2026 16:08

What does that mean, though? Are the Maltese fat??

Yes, as I understand it, the heaviest in Europe.

HoppityBun · 20/06/2026 16:11

Lotc · 20/06/2026 11:57

I asked a friend why she boiled baby potatoes and then added a knob of butter at end. She said it’s faster and easiest. But roasted in oven to me is easier!

Oh! So it’s laziness behind all this. I doubt your culinary credentials tbh because boiled new potatoes are delicious. Known in France as pommes de terre nouvelle.

Not all Europeans drown everything in oil and garlic.

CandyCayne · 20/06/2026 16:12

DimwittedSkater · 20/06/2026 16:08

What does that mean, though? Are the Maltese fat??

It's one of the most obese countries in Europe.

Ginmonkeyagain · 20/06/2026 16:13

My grandparents ate a lot of plain boiled veg and potatoes, but they lived through the war with food and more importantly fuel and fat rationing. I think it is hard to underestimate the impact year and years of food and fuel shortages had on the way older generations of British people ate.

KarmenPQZ · 20/06/2026 11:45

I love a boiled carrot. I don’t need it to taste of salt or olive oil - I just like the carrot flavour that comes out best when gently boiled 🤷‍♀️

Wow yes. Me too. I can't remember anything so ridiculous as this thread, where people are defending their right to eat their vegetables in whatever way they choose 😂

And you say you’re European?

anyolddinosaur · 20/06/2026 16:15

"Brits" dont - your family does and most people will some of the time because it's quick, convenient and you can more easily get them as hard or soft as you like.

These are EU figures so the UK is not included.

Numbers are international, though. And those for males are lower than in those countries, women are level.

They never do. It's always a mysterious, superior, general European country.

bissom · 20/06/2026 16:20

I too love boiled veg - they taste so clean and nourishing and wholesome.
I find roast veg a bit cloying

QueenOfSwedenRose · 20/06/2026 16:19

They never do. It's always a mysterious, superior, general European country.

Sometimes when you press them on it they'll say that it could be 'outing'.

As if a) you can't name change and b) unless maybe the magical mystery land is a tiny place like San Marino or Liechtenstein it's not as if someone is going to read this thread and say 'Hey! That must be Anna!'

Ohthatsabitshit · 20/06/2026 16:21

I would imagine your dh just can’t cook @Lotc .
some vegetables really shine boiled or steamed, and then seasoned. Some roasted or fried. Some stewed.

Daftypants · 20/06/2026 16:21

Yes we are having dinner tonight and I’m going to boil the halloumi , the chicken skewers and the salads 🙄
