Mum covered baby totally in 26 degrees heat

I was shopping today at the local shop when I came across a mum, she was wearing very summery clothes, a light airy short dress.
She had a baby in a pushchair, I would assume around 18 months who was in a full on baby grow- hands covered and feet covered. It is currently 26 degrees where I am. She took the pram out and was pushing the child in direct heat the sun shining on them whilet the poor child was rubbing their eyes trying to get the sun out - not crying or anything. This made me feel so uncomfortable and im kicking myself for not saying anything.

It’s hard to know whether to say something and the comments are not always well received so don’t beat yourself up about it OP.

for me the worst is when I see people using a blanket or muslin to cover a baby in a car seat or bassinet on a buggy. It creates an oven like situation for the poor babies

likelysuspect · 19/06/2026 17:37

What colour and fabric was the babygro? Also wondering if there was a health need or skin problem being dealt with, its hard to say. You'd have probably got a mouthful if you said anything though

nomas · 19/06/2026 17:39

Wearing just a babygro? That’s just one layer. Seems fine.

Baby should have had a hat maybe but maybe she was taking him inside.

It would be worse if she covered the pushchair in this heat.

Sometimes a baby grow is better than shorts/t shirts etc at covering their skin.

My eldest had sever exczma at that age to worry similar, as exposure to sun and sun creams made it so much worse.

Im assuming it wasn't a fleece one? Did they also have a blanket?

Its hard to judge really.

ScottBakula · 19/06/2026 17:40

Perhaps the child suffers from a skin condition that is made worse by the sun . Or a allergy to sun creams

aliceyyyy2654 · 19/06/2026 17:42

YABU you have no idea why that child is covered. Mind your own business.

iwishihadaname · 19/06/2026 17:44

Yes and I can imagine the thread if someone saw a half covered baby with their skin exposed to the sun in this heat. You cant win.

JLou08 · 19/06/2026 17:57

A baby's skin should be covered in the sun. Baby grows are usually very thin cotton. It sounds like they were appropriately dressed.

An 18 month old in a footed babygrow sounds very strange - that's a toddler not a baby!

FckThisShit · 19/06/2026 18:12

Could it have been an eczema suit? They can look just like baby grows with covered hands and feet.

Yanbu to wonder to be honest. I probably wouldn’t have said anything either though, maybe baby had a Poonami and that was the only outfit change she had on her, maybe that was the only clean item ready at home, who knows. I do know some mums local to me though who insist on dressing their child as if it’s winter all year round!! They’re now 3. It baffles me

LittleRobins · 19/06/2026 18:43

It’s normal to wonder but unreasonable to say anything. As others have said there could be health conditions at play. It’s also not your child and not your business.

FeliciaFancybottom · 19/06/2026 18:46

When you came across a mum?

Yes, I remember this so well, DS would scratch any skin he could see, and no matter how short I kept his nails he could leave marks. So, his legs and arms were always covered. Sad

mrsbowes · 20/06/2026 11:35

Babies are supposed to be covered in the heat, so they don't get sunburned.

But there will not ever be a reason to not cover a babies head.

My son also had ECZEMA

thebabessavedme · 20/06/2026 12:07

I'm sure I have been judged in winter weather when DD was a baby who refused to wear socks and shoes in the pram, she would pull them off her feet EVERY time, Her DS was exactly the same - both also refused to keep a sun hat on and screamed blue murder when having sun screen applied.

DavidStopActingLikeADisgruntledPelican · 20/06/2026 12:18

My toddler who’s a similar age has eczema and when it’s not as under control as we would like she wears long sleeves and covered legs to stop her scratching as skin infections are a real concern. We keep her cool by giving her plenty to drink and stripping her down at home where we can distract her with games etc. if you started giving out to me about how I take care of my child I’d be pretty pissed off so it’s probably best you kept your mouth shut.

25 years ago we all did this. I can't believe it looking back!
