Why are people so inconsiderate with their vapes?

What is it with people and their vapes? They produce these massive clouds of stinky, sweet, gross vapour and they are either blissfully unaware or they don't GAF, I don't know which.

School sports day today so a lot of the parents went to the cafe next to the school between dropping kids off and waiting for sports day to start.

I sat indoors and a few parents were outdoors, door propped open as it was a hot day.

I'm sat there, eating my breakfast and suddenly, a huge cloud of stinky strawberry vapour that's been inside someone's manky lungs descends over me and my food. I could taste it in my mouth 🤮

I looked over and it's a dad sat just outside with his back to the door, his vape clouds going behind him and straight inside the cafe.

I moved seats and no more clouds descended on me but I had made a mental note to either say something or passively-aggressively close the door, not sure which I would have done.

Then later I am standing by the track on the school field ready to cheer my daughter on and right in front of me, a vape cloud desends again, this time from another dad in front of me.
On the school field.
At sports day. In a three-person deep crowd of parents, some with toddlers.
This time I am pissed off so I went and told the headteacher who was stood at the side and he announced over the tannoy that vaping is not allowed on school premises. I mean, who does that??!?

As it may be apparent, this is more of a rant than a AIBU, but I am curious why people this this behaviour is OK?

Unreasonable - They are just gormless and don't realise what they are doing
Not unreasonable - They must know, because it's obvious, but they are so addicted to their stinky plastic puff pens that they don't care.

I think you are aware that both your 'choices' are offensive to vapers.

Oh lord above I’ve heard it all now! “Offensive to vapers”. Thanks for the laugh!

I feel like you are one of those that sees vaping as a moral issue. When it is not. It is a cloud of water vapour that will do you no harm.

the point is that it’s water vapour thats been inside someones mouth or lungs. It’s not straight from the machine, it’s been in their mouth first. the machine produces nothing outwith wgat the person has sucked into their body. I dont want to breathe that in. It’s vile.

Yeah i think it will do you harm. i dont know if the statistics are out yet on passive vaping but it gives the actual user lung conditions like emphysema. Maybe in due course they will decide passive vaping is a thing. who knows.

You do know you're breathing in what others are breathing out all the time don't you? At least with vapes you can see where they're breathing😂

PalePinkPeony · 23/06/2026 10:13

It’s foul. And people that don’t care and merrily vape whilst other people are in close proximity are complete chavvy gormless arseholes. Vape far away from others who don’t vape. It really isn’t hard. Or it is that your urge for a vape is so uncontrollable that you are very willing to put your comfort above the comfort of anyone else around you?
Smoking is as bad if not worse but thankfully that’s become socially unacceptable now so if much less frequent.
It’s only a matter of time before vaping is banned / curtailed by law and becomes also socially unacceptable as people realise how damaging it is for them. That day can’t come soon enough.
I mean I don’t know why I am surprised. So many people literally couldn’t give a crap about anyone else beside themselves these days.

mumumental · 23/06/2026 10:26

For accuracy. I’m not a smoker or vaper but it isn’t yet known what the effect is of either smoking or vaping (Asthma and Lung UK).

Bez72 · 23/06/2026 10:26

To all the people saying how harmful / damaging vaping is, please can you provide links to the evidence for this? I've only seen reports saying it's better for you than smoking and the only danger is nicotine addiction, which is no worse than alcohol / caffeine addiction in my opinion...

Yes but usually it doesn't taste of gross, sticky kids' sweets

The fact that there s no evidence is what scares me most about vaping. Nobody knows what the long-term effects are!

Out of interest, would you be totally chilled if you discovered your 16 yr old was vaping? @Bez72

BitOutOfPractice · 23/06/2026 10:28

It's funny isn't it, that it is the blokiest blokes that seem to have the sweetest, sickliest flavour vapes!

Plantchoc · 23/06/2026 10:29

which is no worse than alcohol / caffeine addiction

excuse me?

alcohol addiction is a huge, often fatal and very very damaging illness. And you liken it to caffeine addiction @Bez72

for that utterly weird comment alone, I don’t think I’ll bother reading any of your follow up posts

So why do people get so preachy about something they know nothing about?

No-one knows the long term effects of production of electric car batteries yet but everyone seems to think they're a good thing, so that's 'OK'

Funnily enough that's exactly what happened when she was 18. We sat down together to check the legalities / risks and she carried on with open eyes and a clear conscience because she didn't choose to hide it from me.

Don't worry, I won't lose any sleep over you not reading my posts, my point was it's socially acceptable to be addicted to alcohol (how many times have you heard 'ooh it must be wine o'clock?') and caffeine (or 'don't speak to me until my third coffee') - not saying they're not addictive or damaging!

hopelesslyromantic93 · 23/06/2026 10:35

Agreed - flew on a short break the past weekend. Both journeys, the pilot/airport staff had to tell passengers off for vaping in the queue to board the plane on the tarmac.
One instance, the pilot had to explain that we were right next to a massive tank of fuel and the passenger just laughed. Luckily they were all made to throw them in the bin or wouldn’t be allowed to board. But the entitlement is unbelievable!

I think the NHS says (and I’m paraphrasing) that vaping is a great way to stop smoking as it’s less harmful but not to start vaping if you’ve never smoked.
That seems sensible to me.

Ha this is such a good point. I thought we all understood this after Covid. Being within close proximity to someone else means that you will breathe in their ‘breath’ otherwise you wouldn’t catch airborne diseases 😂

Anyway, I enjoy vaping. It got me off cigarettes. I rarely go to crowded places because I don’t like them so I don’t vape around other people. Not for their benefit though, mainly for mine 😂

Anyway, it’s well known that MN hates vapers as much as it hates landlords and dogs so I won’t lose any sleep over it.

Doesn’t answer my question

You totally chilled about it? No concerns?

(and why am I not concerned your teen vapes!)

Jugjug · 23/06/2026 10:44

I agree. Nobody would dare smoke indoors anymore but vapers seem to think they get a free pass to vape absolutely everywhere. Including in my goddam house, they huff great big clouds of their infant children I struggle to talk to vapers anymore because they also had no qualms huffing over my baby.
One literally started huffing at an inside school play.

It took decades to realise smoking was bad and will probably take decades for the effects of vaping to be discovered but some people learn nothing from history

Socially accepted to be an alcoholic?

No words!!

So by the sounds of it - you’d also be totally chilled about your teens being addicted to alcoholic

Yanbu. Vapes should be prescription only - like they are in some other Countries.

That would just mean everyone on benefits would get them for free. Which sounds fine by me but I know many on here wouldn't like that.
