AIBU to feel angry about people parking too close to my car?

Please be kind I think I’m ND but not diagnosed. I feel crazy writing this so using this anonymous forum to express my anger at people parking really close to my new car!

I’ve spent a lot of money on my new car that I’ve had for 3 weeks, today for example I feel so much anger - drove into work really early only a few cars in parking lot. I was sat in my car getting my stuff together when a colleague I don’t know at all but obviously works there parked right next to me, bear in mind car park was literally empty! She continues to open her door which is now touching my car! I got out quickly and asked if she’s okay and asked her to hang on whilst I move over to make room for her to get out. She says, “no it’s okay I’ll manage!”, I feel so angry like WTF she could have parked a little more to the left so her door could be opened easily without banging into my car. Issue with work car park is there are no parking lines indicating where to park so it’s just left to everyone’s common sense on how much room to leave. Not first time this has happened by the way.

I just don’t get how people are so inconsiderate. Even with my old car I would open the door so carefully and never park so close that my door would be touching a car! I’m just really panicked I will get a scratch on my car from them. I feel paranoid but I keep seeing a dent where she opened her door into my car but DH can’t see anything,

YANBU!! I park at the farthest corner of every car park to avoid this. I can’t stand people who don’t give a crap about my car, so I would park in the field two blocks away from the shop to avoid parking next to another car 🤣

Flamingojune · 19/06/2026 07:29

Life's too short to get so upset about a hunk of metal

schnubbins · 19/06/2026 07:32

I drive a Mini Cooper and I am sick and tired of massive cars parking me in .Some of these new SUV thingies are so bulky that they really need one and a half parking spaces .I have also got a fused ankle and recently a knee replacement which makes getting in and out of a car difficult but cars parked right on top of mine make it impossible .I'm absolutely sick of it.

MandemChickenShop · 19/06/2026 07:35

it's just a car. unclench.

tiramisugelato · 19/06/2026 07:36

Don’t buy a brand new car if you’re going to be this paranoid about it.

Flamingojune · 19/06/2026 07:37

Or ride a bike

WhereverIlaymycatthatsmyhome · 19/06/2026 07:39

Your car will get scratched. You definitely need to calm down.

Loulou4022 · 19/06/2026 07:44

If the car park was empty I would have parked in the furthest away spot then no one will park near you.

The "Weird phenomenon" you speak of btw is one I agree with, but which has a clear explanation -

British drivers, especially women (and I'm a British woman) are just appalling at using their mirrors properly.

I see it all the time at work, at supermarkets etc. People who see one car parked in an empty car park, and then use that car as a "reference point" to drive straight into a space.

It's so frustrating because of course if a person could drive properly, they could just go to an empty space, reverse , and use your mirrors to line up the lines in your reverse view.

Instead, people would rather use an existingly parked car as a lazy reference, which tends to leads to lots of shuffling around to create relative distance.

I hate lazy drivers here, I don't think YABU at all @Helene225 and support you. You should be allowed to have nice things, people should just learn to drive.

But there are no lines in this lot which means the logical thing to do is park next to a car so everyone will fit.

Sausagedog256 · 19/06/2026 07:51

JustGiveMeReason · 19/06/2026 00:55

YABU.

If it makes you this angry, then owning a new car probably isn't for you. Cars will get chips and scratches. Clearly it is annoying and frustrating, but it is going to happen (usually when you aren't there). You'd probably be better with an older car where it will be less noticeable to you when it happens.

Now, I am obviously not saying she shouldn't have been more careful - of course she should. In a narrow space I will always put my hand round the car door if there is any chance of it bumping the next car. She should obviously have done that. However, if there aren't lines / marked bays, then the "right" thing to do is to park next to the first car in, so everyone lines up sensibly and the space can be maximised. If everyone parks randomly, then people who arrive later will find lots of spaces just not quite big enough to get a car in.

Agree. There’s nothing worse than going to an unmarked car park and people have parked in such a way that there ends up being big gaps but not enough for a car space. Means fewer cars can park. If people park next to the existing cars then there’s much more chance that more cars can fit in.

in a marked car park I think differently and wouldn’t immediately park next to an existing car in an empty car park

backformoreofthesame · 19/06/2026 07:56

Parking so she can’t get out without touching your car door isn’t on but parking next to other cars in a car park that will likely get full isn’t anything to complain about

your car is probably safer than if people parked randomly over the car par

I think it's first come, first served.

We need the doors to fully open to access the children's car seats, so in unmarked carparks I park with a suitable gap.

I don’t think it’s necessarily the fact it’s a new car well maybe a little it’s the fact people are so inconsiderate about others property. I think that’s my anger.

thing is a car is something you take around public roads, car parks etc with other drivers so it’s not really your property to be expected to have the same respect as say, your sofa at home.

Myblueclematis · 19/06/2026 08:45

Yesterday, I saw someone who had parked across two bays of a car park so had lots of room around the shiny black Porsche. The car park was full.

Selfish git! 😡

Elieza · 19/06/2026 08:55

that does my head in too.

i park miles away from everyome in the supermarket car park and generally comeback to find a cluster of cars one beside the next all round me.

why people. why?

clearly ive parked in an inconvenient spot for a reason, perhaps to get something big in or out of my car therefore needing doors open (for example a tv or a garden patio set). so dont park right next to me. wtf. 🤬

ive got a video of my car alone in a car park of like 50 spaces and it’s now got cars all round it since i parked there.

surely it’s more sensible to leave an empty space between cars. that way if the car park does not full right up we all have more space. If the inbetween spaces are required fine, should be easy to slot right in the middle.

honestly the council should be more considerate when they tell developers they can only have x number of spaces at the hospital/supermarket/library etc. I dont know if the council specifies the space size but i wish they would take into consideration that cars are longer and wider now so we need more space each.

hamse · 19/06/2026 08:58

Did she touch or bash your car? You've used both words in the thread? Which was it?
If she bashed it why didn't you say something and insist on checking for damage and taking insurance details if there was in fact a dent or asking her to pay for the damage?

If your husband can't see a dent then you are probably imagining it.
You shouldn't have bought a new car if it was going to cause you this much angst.

Rosesandthorns66 · 19/06/2026 09:11

@JustGiveMeReason
Yes I agree with the first post. I also don't think its very healthy for you to be stressed out this much as it will effect your own mental health.
However, I do 100% understand your point of view but what can you do with the annoying lack of consideration from other people. It's like some people don't have the capacity to think.
But you can't spend everyday worrying and getting stressed like this.
I don't have a solution, I understand that you want to drive a nice car and why not, you work and you have the right to spend that money on what you want. You will however come across so many thoughtless people.

Or get supermarket to deliver

Speak for yourself! I am perfectly able to use my mirrors properly. (My husband can as well, both of us are British.) I'll move my wing mirrors to get a better view of the lines when parking if needed too.

Agree!

thats a good point re delivering if it’s heavy items.

the rest of the time i pay for a car to use it.
the supermarket is less than a mile away so it’s convenient. too far to walk with multiple bags and no direct bus.

Seriously, what would be so terrible about getting a scratch on your car? It's just a means of getting from one place to another!

Eh to some people it’s not. I’d be right pissed off if someone scratched my car. It’s about respecting other people’s property

Indeed. I spend hours in my car. I expect it to look smart. Some cars look like their owners don’t give a shit about anything in their lives.

You could equally say why have a nice, clean and pleasant home if it’s only to keeps you warm and protected from the elements. But that’s not what we do (most people).

I think we just accept some people have standards and look after their purchases and some do not. And unfortunately we all have to live near one another.

Whoopiedooo · 19/06/2026 10:37

I'd never park next to a car if I could park with a space either side, or a space and a wall or pavement. Just the same as I would never sit right next to someone if there was enough space not to.
But some people will actively seek to crowd others. Some even seem to do it without meaning to be annoying, though others definitely do.
I'm sorry, but it's the world we live in which is full of all sorts.
Honestly it's why I prefer a pre-scratched car.

Yes leave a suitable gap but I’m just making the point that it makes sense to park next to the first car that parks rather than a random spot further down the line as it creates a situation whereby there are random gaps that a car can’t fit into but are unnecessarily big for just allowing someone space to get out of their car. if everyone had parked appropriately with a normal gap, more cars could fit in.

also this is a workplace car park. There shouldn’t be children there so the point about kids is a bit irrelevant.
