AIBU to think I’ve had the worst onboarding in history?

I think I wrote about this before. I started my new job three months ago. Lovely on paper. Turned up and it was... not that.
What followed was frankly something out of some 80s sitcom. Decisions made by people who'd never met me, who had no clue about what the UK region needs, based on a model that nobody actually likes, including the people running it.
At various points in the last three months:
*I nearly quit
*Had to take seeing pills
*Cried before my shower
*ended up with no manager for more than a month , making executive decisions for the region because everyone assumed someone else had sorted it. But nobody had and HR completely washed their hands.

But then today…. The boss of all of them realised of the comedy of errors that had been happening for the last 3 months, and my life got sorted in 10mins!

It’s still unclear if this will benefit me in the long run, but at least I now have someone to approve my annual leave!

And hopefully will also give me a carte Blanche around my performance bonus.

I want some seeing pills!
what’s the significance of you crying before a shower?

Maybe it’s irrelevant that it was before a shower but it was because of the levels of stress and general upset.

I agree that the induction and probation period (sort of) have been badly managed, though interesting to read that it seems to have worked out ok by now. Never good that work brings anyone to tears.

I am sure there have probably been worse, not much consolation if any.

Yes, I’m sure there have been worse. But this is a multimillion company with like 1000 employees I would have expected better…

It is onboarding. I’ve just been writing an onboarding SOP for my organisation so I must be the ultimate wanker! 🤣🤣

Did they remember to pay you at least?

If this was an NHS job it’s an achievement if they even manage to do that!

Yes, definitely the money side is the best side

I opened this thread to find out what onboarding problem was…I was imagining some travel issues

ElleJayC · 19/06/2026 10:11

Why are so many people being unnecessarily unpleasant on this post? Seeing was clearly a typo for sleeping, she was crying before her shower very clearly explained she was crying at the thought/ stress of going into work…. I cried in the shower every morning when I had to go back to my job after less than 2 months maternity leave. And all this talk of whether onboarding is wanky or not is kind of irrelevant to the post.

Be nice. Oh and my last company who had offices in 12 countries had an entire team called the Onboarding Team. How terribly wanky of us all.

I don't really understand what has happened to you but doesn't sound like onboarding issues but rather sounds like a severe lack of communication and managerial oversight. If things were so bad/not happening correctly why didn't you raise it with someone sooner?

I kept raising it with HR and themselves…. (The leadership teams) and every single time got no answers until I actually asked the “big boss”.

Sounds awful. Hopefully the boss can change processes so that this doesn't happen again?

I genuinely think my case was an “aberration” and I think they’ve all learned their lesson.
