Will children still be allowed YouTube on the family TV with this new social media ban?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m really pleased about this social media ban for under 16s.

But my DS is 7 and AUDHD, we have a YouTube account on the family TV which is in my name. He doesn’t have any access to these things on his own personal device. However we will allow him to watch YouTube on the main family TV because he enjoys watching things that are linked to his hyperfocus/interest at the time. As he cycles through each specific topic.

Will this still be allowed if we let him watch on the main family TV or will it be illegal to do so? It does keep him regulated and we are always present to keep an eye on what he’s accessing.

It’s not currently popular but it will become popular if that’s the only one they have access to.

Blue.sky has literally nothing on it that would be of interest to children, and has none of the features (such as long form videos, voice and video chat) that appeal to children.

It's basically twitter for people who got sick of the toxicity and bots on twitter.

Mastodon and Discord are far more likely to be of interest to children. Discord in particular has some very toxic servers and is already widely known among children who use it for its original purpose (chat in multiplayer games).

The (hidden/real) purpose of the legislation is to make anonymous social media impossible for adults.

I don’t think people realise what is on YouTube and the fact that you don’t need to go searching for it for it to appear. Even on kids YouTube.

People don’t realise.
i have a 14 year old and they are not allowed it in their phone. Literally every single friend has it- I know a lot of their friends mums so can corroborate this. I think I’m the last mum standing! (In my social circle anyway!)

I am not sure honestly if I am comfortable with giving any of these social media platforms my ID as that will be the only way to keep using them. Unless there is an easier way to verify my own age, I have no clue how securely it will be stored and how that data will be held. I hope that is being looked at before every person using it is expected to just hand over this information. It may just stop me using it all.

Good question! There are so many YouTube families that are watched by and marketed towards kids, tweens and teenagers and I sometimes think they make money from advertising and being sent products. I wonder what they and their ‘sponsors’ will do now they don’t have audience.

They make millions. It’s disgusting how families have been allowed to use their kids to make money. There are U.K. families who share every single moment from their child’s life- often it’s the kids enjoying a freebie and having opportunities to enjoy purely because they are on social media. It’s absolutely gross, I hope these parents are seriously impacted by new rules and have to stop exploiting their kids lives to pay for their family lifestyles.

🤣 you do realise you already give them everything they need. All digital ID will do is dial back any anonymous factor of how you’re on the platforms (same as happened with porn hub). Too late to worry about your data, privacy or how they will safely store it, you’ve already shared it all if you’re on any social media platform (you do know that MN serve you ads based on your browsing?) and it’s the same for any child who’s had any social media apps and WhatsApp.

Parents should be extremely cautious about letting their children use Discord. Although it appears to be a normal gaming chat app, it also contains private spaces and hidden channels where inappropriate or unsafe behaviour can occur.

Discord is currently being sued for allegedly allowing child grooming and other dangerous activity to go undetected. With that in mind, I would strongly advise removing the app from any child’s device and keeping them off the platform entirely.

There will be no ban on children watching youtube. There will be a ban on youtube offering accounts to under-16s (currently the age limit is 13).

Yes this is the point. So as long as a parent has an account (which they for example will if they use gmail) the child can still access it.

Of course, there's always the parent who thinks they know best and will circumvent it, like letting their 14 year olds play 18 rated video games...

Why just them? What about the crossbow murderer (and rapist), the murderer (and rapist) of Sarah Everard and the murderer of Emma Pattinson and her daughter.

All white.

menopausalmare · 15/06/2026 16:57

My daughter is 12 and will continue to use YouTube to learn the guitar 🎸

They do not have literal copies of my driving licence or passport, yes they may have a date of birth but if these IDs are needed to me thats a different matter entirely. They are things required for the most sensitive things and in my mind a hell of a lot more concerning than someone having my date of birth. So no I dont see it as the same.

My other concern is that they’re not seemingly banning Roblox or any other gaming platform. Where kids tend to get groomed quite regularly.

My kid plays Roblox. You turn off the chat feature. No grooming. It’s quite simple.

Tryagain26 · 15/06/2026 17:07

Yes they said there will.be exceptions for things like you tube kids education, music etc

Game platforms like Roblox are being looked at and its likely that there will.be some restrictions placed on them.

And people like you are part of the problem

I've had to provide copies of my passport and/or driving license to open savings accounts.

Well yes exactly! This is exactly why you have to be careful exactly where you give that kind of data. Im sure banks have all kinds of processes for storing that data and would have huge issues if that got leaked.
I think just handing over a driving licence or passport in exchange for using social media is not quite the same and to me, you have no assurance how tha data will be stored. You need a bank account etc you dont need social media.

How are people failing to grasp the difference here!

And what about stuff like cat Island on Japan, or Indian sleeper trains? That's not on the kids bit

anotheruser345 · 15/06/2026 17:55

I just think people have found ways around this so honestly it will be a whole load of hoops to jump through for nothing. Roblox has age verification and so many are verified as adults, they just get their parents to verify for them. The same will happen with this. So it appears they are doing something whilst kids will still have access to it all.

MadisonMarieParksValetta · 15/06/2026 17:56

My 14 year old makes 600-1000 a month on youtube. Don't know what will happen to his channel after this. He's spent years building it up.

Does anyone know what this means for young content creators? Is this going to be the end of any UK channels similar to Ryan's World, Vlad and Nikki, Like Nastya etc? Or will they keep going as long as parents manage their accounts/exposure to comments etc?

I hope it stops them. A lot of them are super exploitative. There are strict laws around children being used in advertising/TV shows now such as how many hours they can work. YouTube etc is a Wild West that varies from children being exploited to advertise toys rather than playing but they seem to have fun all the way through to kids/teens being encouraged to produce content that clearly.subtly targets the dirty old men demographic. Gross.

VikingLady · 15/06/2026 17:57

Kids YouTube is where DD saw a snuff Peppa parody.

We home educate and almost all of the HE families I know rely heavily on YouTube. It’s the only place I know to get free access to documentaries on virtually any subject, tips with anything they want to know about, lego videos/channels, old tv programmes from the archives that are never shown, free audiobooks….

Theoretically we can get audiobooks from the library, but they have very few and absolutely all are modern. We listen to children’s classics, to books published in other countries, and we can’t get those anywhere else.

DS loves his documentary channels. Where else will he get a doc comparing how different ships are propelled then have a chat in the comments section with the creator (supervised)? He is teaching himself to repair electric trains - YouTube videos!

FFS. We should be expected to parent. It’s left up to us to enforce age limits elsewhere; why not just have a rating system? Shit parents won’t be improved by a clumsy ban!

You can’t control what comes up particularly with the shorts.
