Sudden weight loss but otherwise feel fine - aibu to worry?

I was pleased at first but now it's gone too far and I look freaky and not hot. I haven't really changed eating or exercise habits. Otherwise feel fine - not tired or twitchy, no aches or pains, skin is ok (people have said I'm looking really well!), nothing else seems off.

Has anyone else had this and it turned out to be something terrible? Should I go to a doctor?

Unfortunately I don't usually weigh myself so can't say how much I've lost but I've dropped two dress sizes since April (again, sadly, not in an attractive way I'm on the verge of no boobs whatsoever).

(44 but pretty certain this isn't peri before anyone says)

Actually I've been taking pycnogenol and Astaxanthin supplements could it be that?? Ugh should stop for a bit just in case.

Are you of roughly average weight? If so, a dress size is probably about 8-14 lb, so you've lost 1-2 stone without explanation in two months? Does that seem about right? If so, yes, definitely see the GP about this.

Cross post with your update about drugs! I don't know what they are, but even if they cause some weight loss that is a lot of weight to have lost. If they were that good people would be using them for weight loss! I would still see GP.

Absolutely go to the doctor

Newsenmum · Yesterday 16:20

Definitely go to the doctor!!!! Surely rule things out.

Larrythecatforpm · Yesterday 16:20

It’s never good when people loose weight without trying, unless your not eating properly you need to go and get some tests done immediately.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · Yesterday 16:21

Yes that definitely needs a Dr review.

oliviaAustin · Yesterday 16:21

Go to the doctor. Unexplained weight loss is always a concern.

If you are eating the same and moving the same then weight loss usually means something is going wrong

Happened to me two years ago - did coincide with my ex moving out . Loads of blood tests etc it was put down to perimenopause, I was 44. I went from size 14 - 16 to size 10 and It hasn't come back on and yes it's quite annoying to get compliments when you are actually clueless as to what is going on.

I used to be a 10 in Marks, 12 in Zara girl but now an 8 is too big in Marks. My ribs are protruding. Just had a shower and horrified by the sight a bit

Oh in some ways this reassures me that at least you're ok two years on! Solidarity at the freaky feelings though.

No these are not proven to cause any weight loss.

Common causes: intestinal malabsorption, thyroid issues, cancer, diabetes.

My mum did get a goitre around my age actually. But she also felt really buzzed and stressed and her eyes were bulging. I don't seem to have any of that.

People react differently to hormonal disruption. Best to get checked.

GranolaBaker · Yesterday 16:30

Blood tests definitely required as unexplained weight loss is a big red flag. dr will want to know specifics but since you don’t know bmi or weight, clothes sizing changes will give them an idea.

are you sure there isn’t any other possible explanation ? Eg lots (and lots!) more incidental exercise (new dog?), small switches in diet (toast to yoghurt for breakfast?) dr will ask you all these questions …

Pinkflamingo10 · Yesterday 16:33

I’m a GP. please visit your own GP for a review and bloods etc Unexplained and sudden weight loss should be discussed and looked into.

CurdinHenry · Yesterday 16:33

It feels a bit like that Stephen King book actually, sort of horrifying

Thanks - I will go. I do exercise a lot but always have because I love to eat so it has kept me in a nice equilibrium of slightly tight waistband but ok really. Was hoping people would say no it's only a worry if you're exhausted or similar.

It does no harm to get checked out but doing nothing could cost you your life if it is something.

I think that's a good idea. Raise a query now so the doctor on shift today can get you booked in.

See your GP. You may be hyperthyroid and need medication - weight loss is a symptom but you can be very very ill if left untreated (heart related issues mainly.)

sheenaWild · Yesterday 16:56

Hey - please get checked out with your family history. I lost 3.5 stone in approx 6 weeks after giving birth, then found a small lump in my neck if pressed a few months later - was diagnosed with thyroid cancer almost a year later. Had no other symptoms, nothing showed on blood tests or through biopsies. On the plus side the survival rate is very high for most forms of thyca.

Zanatdy · Yesterday 16:58

This kind of thing definitely needs checking out. Just because you feel fine doesn’t guarantee everything is. Don’t ignore then regret later, could well be nothing, but better to get it checked out.

Vaguelyclassical · Yesterday 16:58

Do please see your doctor. Some things are easily fixable but dangerous if neglected; my overactive thyroid made me lose a stone without trying, but medication fixed the thyroid and I've now been in remission and off medication for 15 years. (The stone, alas, came back . . . .)

cheekynamechang3 · Yesterday 16:59

Deffo go to the Dr. They will run tests to check on you.

My husband had this too- he lost 1 stone in 6 months completely unintentionally. Only thing is that he is stressed at work... but this has not affected his appetite.

He had full bloods, CT scan and endoscope and all were clear... thankfully... so we think it's nothing sinister. He also has started to eat more and put weight on. The Dr did take him very seriously and all of these tests took place within 2 weeks of him going to see the Dr.

Go to the Dr and good luck.

Grumpymiddleagedwoman43 · Yesterday 17:00

It sounds like Hyperactive Thyroid. This happened to me. Do get it checked out.
