Sudden weight loss but otherwise feel fine - aibu to worry?

CurdinHenry · Yesterday 16:16

I was pleased at first but now it's gone too far and I look freaky and not hot. I haven't really changed eating or exercise habits. Otherwise feel fine - not tired or twitchy, no aches or pains, skin is ok (people have said I'm looking really well!), nothing else seems off.

Has anyone else had this and it turned out to be something terrible? Should I go to a doctor?

Unfortunately I don't usually weigh myself so can't say how much I've lost but I've dropped two dress sizes since April (again, sadly, not in an attractive way I'm on the verge of no boobs whatsoever).

(44 but pretty certain this isn't peri before anyone says)

Just came to say thyroid too. Definitely go to your GP.

BeKookyExpert · Yesterday 17:33

Have you lost your appetite? It happened to me and was very extreme - I went from a size 20 to a size 6. But it wasn’t “unexplained” in the sense that I had literally no appetite and that was why. But the doctor still ran a lot of tests (nothing was found and I gradually got some of my appetite back)

Passaggressfedup · Yesterday 19:55

Well you should be tired, so the fact you aren't might indeed be an indication of hyperthyroidism. Especially with your mum suffering from it.

Magicpaintbrush · Yesterday 20:02

My husband had this unexplained weight loss and it turned out to be bowel cancer - no other symptoms initially even though it had spread to his lungs and liver. Please get checked out at the doctor.

My immediate reaction to this post is that the op is paid to promote those 2 supplements. Anyone else thinking the same?

  1. They're generic. 2. I look horrible. Breasts actually hurting a bit this morning from feeling empty. 3. Get a grip.

Go to a doctor, especially if you have any of the following: night sweats, itching, enlarged lymph nodes, fatigue

No because if op was selling them then it’s not a good advert!

mondaytosunday · Today 09:56

No @Jopo12that didn’t cross my mind at all.
OP unexplained weight loss is one of the biggest signifiers of cancer. Remember what happened to BBC Radio 4’s Nick Robinson? He had a normal checkup then casually mentioned he’d lost weight without trying. Doctor immediately ordered a scan and discovered he had a tumour in his lung. Get yourself checked out asap.

Some people will try anything, especially if they already have an eating disorder.

OP please get yourself checked out. Unexplained weight loss needs looking into.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · Today 09:58

One of the only symptoms of pancreatic cancer is weight loss.

See your Dr ASAP.

I know I’m echoing everyone else but definitely see your GP about this, they’ll run some tests. Has anything especially stressful / worrying been happening?

CurdinHenry · Today 10:06

The thing I don't get about cancer checks is how to they know where to check if you've no other symptoms? I guess I should just ask that too.

Work is incredibly stressful actually but I'm still eating plenty and getting mostly the same amount of sleep. Had a dream last night that I was eating masses of ice cream but still kept wasting.

In many areas they have a rapid diagnostic scheme for patients with red flag symptoms but no obvious causes. They'll do something like a full CT scan and a range of blood tests.

They won’t check any particular area because you’ve got nothing to report, but they will give you loads of blood tests and blood test tell Everything.

BoredZelda · Today 10:13

Being asymptomatic means nothing. I had a blood test that showed a severe vitamin D deficiency. It was done as part of a wider diagnostic for a completely unrelated issue. I should have had a whole load of symptoms for the deficiency but had absolutely none.

CurdinHenry · Today 10:14

Hm I am overdue blood tests anyway. Gp phobia strikes again. Will just get on it, thanks everyone.

I posted earlier to tell you about my husband who was the same- unexplained weight loss, no other symptoms.

The dr checked what she could on his body, including looking at his skin for moles etc. Asked him questions about his lifestyle. Sent him for an xray, full bloods, CT scan and endoscope in his stomach. All was clear in his case... but the dr said if he had cancer that was developed enough to cause weight loss, they would find it in the scan, xray or endoscope.

Definitely get checked @CurdinHenry as you know sudden weight loss is not normal when you're not trying.

Try not to overly worry, it may be a myriad of things, e.g. thyroid, diabetes or hormonal changes, just to name but a few.

Good luck 🌻

They'll do a full blood count and if it's cancer something will probably be out of whack even if you have no symptoms.

I went to the GP with a tiny lump, no other symptoms. I didn't understand why he ordered a blood test but everything came back abnormal. Now I know I had stage 4 cancer, tumour had been growing for years and I had zero symptoms. The lump was actually because the tumour had broken the bone in my sternum. (I'm fine now). I had lymphoma which often has no symptoms, but weight loss can be one of them.

MotherofPufflings · Today 11:36

I had this and it was Graves disease (hyperthyroidism). I thought I felt fine but with hindsight I was anxious and used to get dizziness when I stood up quickly. I also had a hand tremor which I hadn't noticed until the GP pointed it out. It's fairly straightforward to treat.

They can get a fair amount of information from blood tests and if nothing shows up they’ll start scanning the high risk areas (lung, liver, kidneys etc.)
