To think men should not be allowed to be gynaecologists

Just that, really. Saw one last week. He was trying to be helpful, but I really really really don’t want to discuss ‘do you get clots’ ‘do you experience flooding’ ‘do you find intercourse painful’ with a strange man. Yes it would be awkward with a strange woman too, but at least I know she likely has some lived experience of what we are talking about. TBH I also question men’s motives for choosing this job, not just the licence to look at strange women’s vaginas, but I think there’s something deep in the male psyche that just loves laying down the law to women about their reproductive systems. It’s a job for a woman, and while I know men were allowed to train for it in the past, I think they should now be phased out.

I had a male midwife as well as gynecologist. To be honest he was the most carrying and understanding of them all. The female ones dismissed my pain and made me feel upset as I was having a high risk birth. Where he took the time to explain things to me and my options. I was with him for his whole shift until a female midwife took over. Ive had the same with male gynecologist being less dismissive.

I think that posts like this completely ignore the effect this would have on women. There's no evidence that I'm aware of which would suggest women who wish to specialize in gynae are being held back by perverted men.

So my questions are:

  1. If there wasn't a rush of women entering the profession, how long would women have to wait before being seen for a gynae appointment?
  2. What pressure would have to be brought to bear on female medical students to get them to choose gynae? And if they didn't really want to do it, what effect would that have on quality of care?

I don't think they should be banned, but they must understand that some women may feel intimidated about talking about intimate issues with them and may prefer a woman.

Yet the majority of women have sex with males. So it's ok for some random block to put his dick up you but not a qualified doctor to take a look in a medical sense

And by that scale are lesbian gynaes also a risk to women?

What a disgraceful comment.Yes, women have sex with men. So what?

Does that take away their right to informed consent in medical settings and their right to choose who they are seen by?

What other rights should we strip them of?

Why a disgraceful comment lol. Merely true

But you do have a choice in medical settings. You can ask to see a female doctor. Just might have to wait a bit longer to do so if one isn't instantly available

I am not sure mixing the concept of sexual relations and the idea of professional care by a trained specialist is helpful.

I am all for male gynaecologies/ obstetricians/ paediatricians and many have long proven they are doing an amazing job

but I doubt "You'd have sex with him anyway" is the angle they would go for 😂😂At best it's offensive!

Why? Read what you said.

You weren't talking about women's choice in medical settings.

You criticised women because they "allow some random block to put his dick up" but not a doctor to take a look.

Since the entire topic of discussion is male doctors, we are not talking about allowing any doctor to "take a look" are we?

Yes, women have a choice. And it would be a tragedy if that choice was not available.

Wow. Dripping with misogyny.

I imagine that for the most part, women who don't want a doctor examining them intimately, also aren't likely to be the ones rushing around having loads of casual sex with men they don't know.

But that aside....consenting to having sex with a man you don't know well, doesn't mean you're have to give blanket consent to every man to have access to your vagina. A woman might feel comfortable after a few drinks, to have sex with a man she feels attracted to, but that's not the same thing as - stone cold sober, nervous about the results, and in a position of vulnerability - having to lie back and spread your legs while a man shines a light up your vagina and examines it in great details, and a nurse watches.

Whammyammy · Today 12:37

What about gay or bisexual women? Can they also not be trained gynaecologists?

.I said that the majority of women have sex with men ( perfectly normal) but getting her up at a male medical person who only looking at them in a medical sense.

It's previous posters suggesting there's possibly sexual intentions from a male gynae. as in " why would a man want to do such a job" and suggesting interior motives

in the context of the ridiculous OP's point, of course they absolutely cannot.

But you DONT HAVE TO. You CAN CHOOSE to have a female doctor.

Unforgettablefire · Today 12:39

I had a breast lump and the exam and tests were done by a man. I normally ask for a female for these kinds of things and I felt uncomfortable but it was either get it seen to or not.
I don’t know why men are interested in this job but it doesn’t upset me. Different people have interests in different areas I’d love to hear from a man why they’re interested in that particular one.

I honestly can’t decide if you’re unreasonable. You are if you’re suggesting they do it just so they can peer at vaginas.

OtterlyAstounding · Today 12:49

Thechaseison71 · Today 12:39

Perhaps you should have said that then, instead of implying that letting one man put his penis in your vagina (in an entirely different context, and probably not a 'random bloke' either), means you shouldn't say no to another man intrusively examining your vagina.

Quite correct. They shouldn't be allowed to be obstetricians either.

What about women consultants looking after men? Should they all be banned too! When you have seen one vag they all look the same!

I have bloody said that haven't I?

And it's public knowledge as well that you can choose a female doctor

The" implication" was obviously in your head and not mine

I do remember about ten years ago with a new intake of registrars there wasn’t a single female registrar. So fr a whole year only men. We did have a couple of female consultants. I remember one pregnant woman saying she wanted a guarantee when she went into labour only female doctors would look after her. We had to explain that no hospital could guarantee that, if she went into labour at a weekend or overnight it would be whoever was on shift. Even during a working day we can’t necessarily pull a female doctor out of clinic to cover labour ward for one patient. But that year we could guarantee her that she would NOT get a female doctor. She transferred care to another hospital. Which she’s entitled to do.

Yeah, that was 10 years ago. Things are very different now, and looking at the pipeline of trainees, the specialism is only going to get more female-dominated.

aurpod1980 · Today 13:40

Just further to my last comment I had a male
midwife in NICU who commented that my prem
baby’s head was the same size as my breast as I tried desperately for her to take milk from me.

No female spoke to me like that. God no wonder I’ve got PTSD from that entire birthing experience.
