AIBU to ask where the line is with swearing?

I have just been reading another thread and the consensus seems to be that saying "go get the fucking cup" is likely to be frustration/tiredness etc and while not ok not that big of a deal. But I have read others where "fucking idiot", "fuck off"
or "for fucks sake" are ltb territory. What's the difference? Where is the line? Is it when is directed at someone? Does it depend on how much they swear normally and how normalised it is for you? Is swearing around children never ok ... but we may slip up from time to time and shouldn't beat ourselves up about it?

I’m of the view it is the context and intention behind the swearing that dictates whether it is appropriate/offensive etc

Muffsies · 05/06/2026 21:02

Don't swear aggressively, don't swear at someone, don't use derrogatory/mocking swear words, don't swear when the kids have their friends over.

Any word can be offensive if you use it in an aggresive or mocking way. Words are always worse when directed at someone. Like the difference between saying "that sounds stupid" and "you're so stupid"

Like a previous poster I've been married 20yrs and I don't argue with anyone. It doesn't serve me, I don't enjoy it and there's nothing I profoundly disagree on with people whose company I enjoy.

You've posted a lot of vague, non related hypothetical scenarios, something about court etc. not sure I follow.

Ha I know daft cunts, great cunts and fucking cunts.

Or just 'that cunt' !!!

Teanbiscuits33 · 05/06/2026 21:28

‘Go and get the fucking cup’ does seem like frustration, where ‘fuck off’ and ‘fucking idiot’ are directed at the person. The two are completely different. I’m relaxed with swearing but insults directed at me would be LTB territory.

Yup.

@TheBusyMoose teacher hat here... but its quite straight forward.

Swearing AT someone is not OK. Ever.

Swearing in frustration e.g. FFS is sometimes necessary!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/06/2026 21:38

I think swearing in a light heated, as a sort of emphasis in a sentence, or just to make it funnier, is totally fine between adults.

Swearing at someone or swearing in anger (esp if you have the power in the situation) is not Ok.

SallyAnnDrivesACar · 05/06/2026 21:48

Swearing is just words to me. They don't have any meaning to me. Probably because I've worked with teens in care for 30 years.

No humour? Because it is funny or are you the typical humourless teacher!

I tell my dh to fuck off a lot but in jest maybe he should divorce me!😂

Nooo, if it’s in jest that’s fine! But if it’s said seriously and regularly then it’s abusive.

Floppyearedlab · 06/06/2026 00:30

Don’t like the F word at all. Nor C.

DH and I do say shit/shite/BS but not in front of children. And never aimed at anyone.

Seriously it’s intent not the words. But I do know some people who are really weird about swearing and can’t deal with it - I don’t spent time with them because I enjoy a good swear and they don’t - we are not at all compatible
