What do you give your 10/11 year old for breakfast?

I am really struggling to find healthy breakfast options for my 10 and a half year old daughter.
I usually give 2 pan au chocolate or chocolate crepe or 3 scotch pancakes with margarine or cereal or 2 slices of toast with chocolate spread or peanut butter or jam.

She is over weight and we have started consciously giving healthy home cooked dinner which includes meat or fish and vegetables and of course have not mentioned anything to her but breakfast seems to be our downfall, she likes porridge in the winter but not in the summer.

Also packed lunch tends to be a generic sandwich, yogurt, piece of fruit and crisps.

If she likes porridge, what about overnight oats with some berries? Or muesli?

Beachbeachbaby · 04/06/2026 20:20

Porridge, scrambled eggs on toast with avocado. Weetabix and banana. Marmite on toast.

Ethelspagetti · 04/06/2026 20:21

Mine have bran flakes, if they’re still hungry then a banana too. Those pan au chocolates are full of fat. I’d take away the crisps. Avoid all processed food. She can have fruit and a healthy yoghurt with her sandwich.

COUNCAT14 · 04/06/2026 20:22

Okay the breakfast you are giving are full of calories, sugar and fat. Healthier cereals, wheatabix, yoghurt and fruit, eggs or beans, wholemeal toast, etc would be much healthier and more filling.

Laiste · 04/06/2026 20:27

Cut out the crisps in the packed lunch. Totally empty calories. Zero nutrition.

Breakfast - would she eat a simple single egg omelette with a slice of whole meal toast?

Or some fruit with a bowl of cornflakes ?

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 04/06/2026 20:28

My 11yo has Weetabix or other cereal, which is a upf but nothing super sugary. She also has little waffle type things or croissants as DH buys them in.

However she is very skinny so if the question is more about weight loss for this age I would ask-

Will she eat peanut butter on toast?

Overnight oats as a PP says?

Eggs of any kind?

Or, you can make breakfast muffins like cornmeal muffins?

You could also try a "non-breakfast breakfast". I.e. have a healthy light meal that you wouldn't normally associate with breakfast. I very often do eggs with vegetables for my own breakfast, and whilst she might not eat that, could you try approaching it from the angle of "what healthy stuff DOES she like" and offer that for breakfast?

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 04/06/2026 20:28

Oh yeah what about Greek yoghurt with fruit and.honey?

Loulou4022 · 04/06/2026 20:29

Boiled egg and toast and a piece of fruit
yoghurt, fruit and a little bit of granola or a low calorie cereal sprinkled on top for some crunch.
scrambled egg, grilled tomato and bacon on toast.
beans on toast
On the 2 days I commute for work I often eat my breakfast in the car so I do have 1 pain au chocolate along with a banana/ grapes/ strawberries/ apple and a squeezey yoghurt. So she could maybe still have a treat breakfast of 1 pain au chocolat occasionally but with some healthy additions.

I've recently cut out all the shite less healthy choices from DD4 (11) diet as i could see it was having an effect on her weight. I just stopped buying crisps, chocolate and buscuits so they weren't in the house to have daily.

It made a difference really quickly as she's an active girl.

Loulou4022 · 04/06/2026 20:33

I’ve also done some banana muffin things where you mash up a ripe banana add oats, chopped nuts, dried fruit, chocolate chips and then cook in the oven.

Lmnop22 · 04/06/2026 20:34

In the summer I would do something interactive for her like yoghurt bowl where she gets to build it herself with berries, honey, muesli, dried fruit etc etc maybe? Might make it fun.

Or boiled eggs and one slice of toast with v light butter soldiers?

ToffeeCrabApple · 04/06/2026 20:35

Avoid anything sugary & processed like cereal, chocolate spread, jam.

Eggs are great
Boiled egg & a slice of brown toast
Scrambled eggs
Unsweetened/greek yoghurt with fruit

I don't think scotch pancakes are awful if you make them from scratch and don't add a lot of sugar & don't add sugary toppings. I have a recipe thats mainly egg/flour/milk which is ok for a growing child.

searchforthesun · 04/06/2026 20:35

My son eats egg muffins with cheese and sweetcorn. They keep for a few days.
protein pancakes with banana
scrambled egg on toast
crumpets dipped in egg cooked in the air fryer
carrot cake overnight oats
fishfinger sandwich (a bit odd I know!)

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 04/06/2026 20:36

Poached eggs on sourdough toast; Greek yoghurt (full-fat) with berries and honey and a little sprinkle of granola; porridge and cinnamon, dippy eggs and soldiers

she does like weetabix but I didn’t think it was a healthy option.
She also loves fruit yogurt but not Greek yogurt so some fruit mixed in would probably work but would that be filling?
Sadly she doesn’t like eggs which is a staple breakfast for the rest of us.

Mine absolutely love an omelette and can pack some veggies into as well. For a quick version for school morning I bake some egg bites that can be heated up in the microwave in the morning. Sheet pan pancakes with frozen fruit baked in the oven then can be portioned and warmed up in the morning. They also love baked oats and that wheetabix cheesecake you make with wheetabix and yoghurt and we do ours with fruit and biscoff. Also love scrambled eggs on toast, french toast, avocado toast but those tend to just be on weekends. My kids also love a smoothie.

ToffeeCrabApple · 04/06/2026 20:36

Be careful about both dried fruit & nuts. Dried fruit is very sugary .nuts are extremely calorie dense, I was advised to give them to my underweight daughter to help her gain weight.

80smonster · 04/06/2026 20:36

DD likes sourdough toast with advocado, sometimes humous too.

UsernameShmusername2024 · 04/06/2026 20:38

My 10 year old has cereal (options are generally weetabix, shredded wheat, cheerios, bran flakes, cornflakes), porridge with frozen berries warmed through in it or toast/crumpets with peanut butter. Maybe a piece of fruit to go with any of those things. Occasionally greek yogurt with fruit.

ToffeeCrabApple · 04/06/2026 20:39

Kedgeree? Oily fish is v healthy & eggs etc.

spideysmumma · 04/06/2026 20:39

Protein yoghurt is a good one for filling tummies I find x

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 04/06/2026 20:39

Why on earth are Weetabix considered unhealthy??

If she likes eggs, run with that. So many ways you can serve them. We like scrambled eggs with fruit. Veggie omelette. Poached egg on toast with avocado. Weetabix or porridge with fruit, nuts and seeds. Basically go with non UPF and high protein.
