AIBU to think a birthday scratch card win was harmless fun?

It was my daughter’s birthday this week, and I got her a scratch card just for a bit of fun.

She ended up winning £100 from a £5 card.

I mentioned it to a friend, but she felt quite strongly that she’d never let her child do anything like that, as she sees it as gambling.

It felt a bit over the top to me, to me it was just a harmless bit of fun for a special occasion....

Is she being over top?

It’s not a massive issue, but I’d probably prefer not to normalise gambling for my children. It’s a bit of fun but also introduces them to the idea both that they can get a dopamine hit from it and that it can be a way to make money.

God she’s miserable. I bet she hates kids bingo at holiday camps because it’s gambling! And arcades!
I made a pass the parcel for my son’s 8th birthday. Alternate layers of scratch cards and sweets, and all the kids ran to their parents to scratch off the cards. A couple won a few £ and I think one girl won £5, but it was just a bit of fun.

You committed a criminal offence.

I'm just wondering how many of the people who have said that they wouldn't have done what the OP did, would happily let their kids of all ages play the slot machines? Basically, that's gambling too, but I think a lot of parents don't see it like that.

Nah you can’t play the slots while clutching your pearls… 🙄

Has anyone ever run to a teddy tombola with a couple of those giant bears? We almost had to cut a kid off at the local fair as he came back about 10 times to try to win it. In the end it was near the end of the day and we wanted to get away so we just gave him it. Nothing is safe! Grin

jinglejanglescarecat · 04/06/2026 21:17

Sounds like a nice bit of fun!! It’s probably better that 13 than 16/18 anyway!!

surely raffles and tombolas at the school fayre are still gambling!! I hate the teddy tombola but OMG we get through ALOT of money trying to win some stupid fluffy thing that is never seen again 😂

I work at a very senior level in the gambling industry and am a very keen sports bettor myself so I’m incredibly pro-gambling.

I imagine I know more about it from both sides of the fence than every other person on this thread.

I buy them on purpose. I have gotten scratchcards (only the £1 ones) for my son's (I have two boys) advent calendars for the last couple of years because I want them to see the futility of gambling.

When they saw that over the 25 days that they hardly won anything, (the most they won once was £10) it does take something away from that exciting feeling you get from gambling.

My youngest son (aged 13) worked out that I had spent £50 on these scratch cards and they had only won a measly £10 so we were actually £40 down, his comment "it's just not worth it Mum, is it?" led to a real conversation on the perils of gambling and how the only winners are the lottery, casinos and betting companies.

I am hoping it will be enough.

You’ve wasted £100 on scratch cards and think you’re somehow teaching your DC the errors of gambling? Aside from anything else, that’s really sad that your DC get an advent calendar filled exclusively with worthless bits of cardboard. I expect they’d rather you saved £40 a year and stuck some chocolate behind the windows instead.

Well done you @StephQ1- I would imagine all of the thread are bowing down in awe 🥱

sittingonabeach · 04/06/2026 21:22

If she asked to put £100 on more scratch cards or a bet on the horses, would you facilitate it for her?

dontbeataboutthebush · 04/06/2026 21:23

Good lord don’t people over react… I buy them at Christmas and put them in the Christmas crackers for all, that’s right even the 6 year old gets one..
it’s harmless fun and everyone knows you are very very lucky if you win.
Hope your daughter enjoys spending her extra surprise money, massive mum points for you I’m sure.

Bollixtothat · 04/06/2026 21:24

It is gambling and 13 is too young imo.

Simply pointing out that the majority of comments on this thread are comically inaccurate.

If she’d won thousands, would she even be able to claim the prize at 13?

Well obviously her mother would claim it then give it to her daughter.

What ‘comically inaccurate’ posts are you referring to?

Majority of posters have just given an opinion.

There is a big difference. One is a criminal offence, the other isn’t.

I’d not allow that either.

Has anyone ever been prosecuted for buying a scratch card for a child?

Do you think that generally it leads to problems later in life?
