About year 6 leavers hoodies

Readyforthelaunch · Yesterday 16:02

Dd is in year 6 and one of the parents very kindly organised leavers hoodies for the whole of year 6.

I had two older children that attended a different school and in their case, their school organised the hoodies and the children were allowed to wear them for the last half term (after SATS).

DD’s school have said no. They’ve even gone as far as to say that any children wearing the hoodies will have them confiscated. The school have said that the children can wear them on the last day only.

I’m very surprised as the school is actually quite lax when it comes to enforcing uniform rules generally.

The year 6 parents are not happy.

Aibu to think that the children should be allowed to wear their leavers hoodies now?

I agree with this.

And I also think that everyone being “given the option” of buying one is less than ideal. What parent wants to tell another parent in their class that they can’t find the money to buy their child a hoody?! That’s not the same as it being accessible and inclusive.

When schools organise paid events - like the residential etc - there are often behind-the-scenes arrangements for families that don’t have much money.

I understand the kids are disappointed- or is it actually really the parents?? - but the school had nothing to do with the hoodies, so their stance doesn’t seem unreasonable.

And there is usually a behind the scenes arrangement for leavers hoodies too.

Near me the state school kids get a leavers’ hoodie at the start of their last year of primary and wear it constantly. I know there are 11, and I’m being mean but it’s just so lame! 😂 I can’t explain my irrational dislike of them. They are just so uncool, but the kids must think they are the bees knees.

Honestly it’s insane these days the amount of things that schools expect you to pay for and organise.

I forgot to add to the list all the Christmas card designs they do every year where you end up being pressured into buying a ridiculously overpriced mug, tea towel, cushion and whatever else with your child’s drawing on it. They’ve started doing them for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day too now.

School photos are extortionate.

They do Santas grotto every year during school
time £7 a go.

Really does throw the argument of left out children out of the window.

No! Because those things are not visible day in day out like your idea of children wearing hoodies after sats, when everyday they’d be the odd one out.

Unkind.

All of the primary schools near here have them. All of my children, nieces and nephews, and friends kids have gone through primary and had them. They all got them after SATS for the last few weeks of their final term and all wore them to death both inside and outside school. Right through summer too and only stopped once they got to secondary although I always see a few still kicking about into September.

For those saying how rubbish it is and what a waste of money etc, remember being 10 or 11. Remember leaving primary school and feeling so grown up. They absolutely love them, ours are even allowed to wear them when they go to the secondary school taster days in July and you see all of the Year 6's from all of the different primary schools proudly wearing their colour heading to big school (the schools somehow must discuss to make sure each school opts for a different colour). The PTA's step in quietly if needed to ensure no-one misses out.

It's really special for them and it brings joy.

We ordered them at the start of Year 6, they are only allowed to wear them on the day they are in PE kit all day, but have done that throughout Year 6. They arrived just in time for the residential, which was September/October time, so they've had a good amount of wear at our school but not every day use.

It’s not ‘my’ idea. It a very widespread thing that a lot of schools participate in. It wasn’t my idea to order the hoodies but it was organised by another parent after she put the feelers out.there was a lot of enthusiasm and every single child has got a hoodie.

All of the children have a hoodie so no one would be left out.

In 2026 all the children bought a hoodie and no one is or was left out.
What happens next year if there ARE some children left out but everyone expects a rerun of the 2026 arrangements?
Maybe the school is stopping trouble for future years?

Frankenpug23 · Yesterday 21:11

Both my kids were only allowed to wear the hoodie on the last day - this seems fairly normal where we are. This is a real fuss about nothing!!

What has next years year 6 got to do with this years?

That's a stupid argument. Last years year 6 went on a trip arranged by school, this years hasn’t 🤷‍♀️ not every year group does the same things each year.

The hoodies were arranged by a parent of a child in the class. The school could have arranged hoodies like many, many other schools do.

People on this thread are coming up with all kind ms of arguments as to why hoodies are such a bad idea, but yet schools up and down the country organise and allow leavers hoodies and it works out perfectly fine.

There is no harm to come from these hoodies anymore than there is any other paid for extras that schools offer and encourage.

The only thing I can think is that if this isn’t a “school organised” initiative perhaps they don’t want this to become the expected norm for future year 6’s if it’s not something they do?

They must have their reasons. I should have said in my op but the school haven’t emailed or anything like that.

The parent arranged the hoodies and she got a list from the school with all the names. The school assisted with a list but they wouldn’t send out a communication email. However they did distribute the hoodies to the children once they all arrived.

They told the children that they could wear them on the last day but the message obviously didn’t get back to all parents and the next thing some of the children started wearing them and teachers were threatening to confiscate them.

The annoyance from parent has come from that uniform rules aren’t adhered to anyway. It’s a complete free for all so it’s odd that they are threatening to confiscate the hoodies.

Perhaps the school have been trying to educate the children on wasteful consumption and do not want to undermine this lesson by encouraging them to buy a hoodie that most do not need, may not want to pay for and will not wear out of school?

Fine, some will wear them again but a lot won't. I've had 2 kids through Y6, neither wore theirs for more than 3 or 4 days max.

Signing t-shirts is more fun anyway and a much better keepsake - if they really want a physical momento.

Ours have leavers' hoodies AND leavers' t shirts.

Seems silly to buy a hoodie if only allowed to wear for one day. Hardly worth buying one

My kids all wore theirs outside of school months and even years after they left. DS is in year 11 and only just took his year 6 hoody out of his drawer!

I think you are getting an unnecessarily hard time here OP. I have definitely seen this issue raised before on Mumsnet and think it is really mean spirited of the school to only allow them to be worn for one day!.

At DD’s school they also had leavers hoodie and were allowed to wear them as soon as they arrived, more or less for 5-6 weeks leading up to the end of school.

They were so excited and proud to have them, it was lovely.

She still wears hers now and left primary almost 2 years ago.
