Help me solve this dispute with my husband (lighthearted)

OK so this debate has become increasingly heated and I need mumsnetters to settle it! I want to get this personalised picture book I have seen for our son’s birthday in July - he is turning 3 - about football/friendship and you can choose kit colour for the main character (and their hair, name etc - it’s meant to be him in the story).

So here’s the (lighthearted) marriage breaking decision - I wanted to choose a blue kit as this is my son’s favourite colour, my husband insists I should choose black and white stripes for Newcastle (his team). I get that my son will likely support Newcastle one day but right now he is little and he loves blue (and maybe I secretly think the storybook will look prettier with blue!).

Anyway please vote, I’ll take the mumsnet decision as binding!

YABU - Pick Newcastle stripes, it’s a story about football, bonding with his dad, etc

YANBU - pick blue as your son will love it, you prefer it (and this is your present idea!)

I could probably grab screenshots of what the character looks like in each colour if helpful

Get the Newcastle colours and your DH get him a Newcastle kit. Then it will be him the book in his kit.

Is it you that’s organising the gifts? If it is, get the one you want to get.
Alternatively if your husband would like to take over the birthday gift job then let him get on with it.
It sounds as though he’d prefer to supervise you than do the work himself.

We've done these personalised books over the years. We've always chosen clothes colours to match clothes they have, so you can literally say "look it's you wearing your favourite tshirt!". Does he have a favourite blue tshirt or Newcastle football strip?

ThisTimeWillBeDifferent · Yesterday 14:54

Get him a Newcastle shirt and a blue football to go with it. Best of both worlds!

Alternatively, get the blue and tell DH it’s the 22/23 Newcastle away kit…

ErlingHaalandsManBun · Yesterday 15:21

If the story is about football and bonding with his Dad then yes it should be the Newcastle strip colours which makes it proper relevant.

thejadefish · Yesterday 15:23

Blue for your son & another book with a shirt in black & white with DH's name etc/DH can have his own one?

Ablondiebutagoody · Yesterday 15:25

Newcastle stripes.

Dweetfidilove · Yesterday 15:26

Get someone to make him an outfit- half blue, half Newcastle. Everyone's happy.

Sunnydaysarehereagain2026 · Yesterday 15:27

My ds got a newborn size Newcastle strip. At nearly 18 he's still got the kit on a teddy!!

gannett · Yesterday 15:28

Black and white because what it signifies is deeper than a favourite colour.

Blue is my favourite colour as well but that didn't mean presents in different colours would devastate me as a child. He'll be fine with black and white and if he actually does end up supporting Newcastle it'll add even greater meaning to it.

BlueMum16 · Yesterday 15:29

Depends how much of a football fan DH is.

Arm chair fan, take it or leave it then blue is fine.
If he regularly watches the match and is a true supporter then Newcastle all the way.

Perfect!!!

YourPoliteTurtle · Yesterday 15:31

His favourite colour might be blue, but wouldn't he prefer to be "like daddy"?
Even if he doesn't get interested by football in the future, it's still something he can associate with his dad, more than some colour.

whackwhackoops · Yesterday 15:41

If you tell your DH that they can only do block colours on the shirts ie. no stripes, only white, black and primary colours will he be able to check? (or bother to check)

Get the Newcastle colours and your DH get him a Newcastle kit. Then it will be him the book in his kit.

Do this so he can have a photo of himself wearing the strip to go with the book.

If he goes on to be a Newcastle fan he will love it more as time passes.

DeftGoldHedgehog · Yesterday 16:00

Get him a replica Newcastle third kit shirt for 2025/26. It's blue.

TinyCottageGirl · Yesterday 16:07

Definitely the Newcastle colours - if I was in this situation and chose blue over red, my Man U supporting DH would not be pleased haha!

BillieWiper · Yesterday 16:15

Yeah to me even at that age you know that football kit isn't just meant to be your favourite colour. It's for your team. He'll be exposed to it via his dad so that presumably will be his team? I think it would be more realistic and cute to have it as that.

But also I hate Chelsea 🤣

MyMilchick · Yesterday 16:18

Definitely get the Newcastle colours. When he does end up supporting Newcastle he will appreciate looking back at this gift more imo

Pickledonions12 · Yesterday 16:22

A BLUE kit when Dad supports Newcastle??? Sort yourself out mate 🤣

Sartre · Yesterday 16:28

Of course you should get him the stripes otherwise he’ll look like a Man City fan.

Thanks for the suggestion @Dweetfidilove - unfortunately this solution isn’t flying here 😅

Love your suggestion @thejadefish 🤣🤣

I can see in the comments that Newcastle has more support, the vote is quite close though, I appreciate that some of you agree with me!

I think I am not ready to be a lone female in a football mad house!
