People from other countries - they’re just better than us, aren’t they?

I’m on holiday in the Balkans and like everytime I go overseas, it’s difficult not to conclude people from other countries are just better than us.

Immaculately kept, litter free, great service in bars and restaurants by experienced staff, polite well behaved kids eating out in restaurants, not a screen in sight. Everyone generally better looking, better dressed.

Or do I have rose tinted holiday goggles on?

I do kind of know what you mean. Part of the problem is our underclass. We have a vicious, feral underclass in the U.K., and we can do nothing with them. Both the left and right have utterly failed. Nothing works. All countries have criminals, and all countries have a underclass, but in Britain it just seems larger and uglier and nastier than everywhere else. Let me stress that by ‘underclass’ I do not mean the poor. On the contrary, the decent poor are their main victims.

Another big problem is the self-loathing. I really notice this when I’m abroad. Other countries will fly their flag and take great pride in their writers and scientists. But we have this weird masochistic streak. We are taught to hate ourselves and reject our own history and culture. The obvious result is that you no longer give a sh*t about the society around you. If you are brought up to hate and reject your own culture, you’re not going to care if the local bus shelter is vandalised!! Who cares?! It’s a vile, shameful country anyway!

Nail on the head there with all your points, especially the bit where we seem to be encouraged to "self loath" as a nation. Never experienced that anywhere else except the UK - most other countries I've been to are proud of their nation, and like you say, proud to fly the flag etc.

I think the average British person is fine. The problem is that we have a disproportionate number of chavs who display loud, loutish behaviour and show the rest of us up. I also think that British people are, unfortunately, not as good looking, on average, compared to most other countries. Not sure why, but I suspect that it’s partly the climate, lack of exercise, poor diet etc. Also, lots of people with appalling dress sense, who insist that they should be able to ‘wear what they want’, even when the that involves everything hanging out on display!

Do not only are Brits crap at.everything we are all ugly too🙄🙄🙄.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 31/05/2026 15:56

I so wish I was Parisian 😌

The chic kind, not the endless riots kind

SusieSussex · 31/05/2026 15:57

I think there's a big difference between going on holiday somewhere and living there. If you don't agree why not looking into moving abroad OP?

More attractive for sure!

Post a photo of yourself so we can admire your beauty

Frumpitydoo · 31/05/2026 16:00

Speak for yourself OP.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 31/05/2026 16:03

Yes. Whenever I come back to Ireland I always notice how sloppy people have become in their appearance, including myself. I could make more of an effort.
The public services are spotless unlike the diseased random public bathrooms available in Ireland.
I don’t see a crisp white shirt for miles.

Inmyuggs · 31/05/2026 16:05

A older lady who returned to england said it was disgusting after years living elsewhere how much it had changed and the statement of dog shit up the streets had me crack up.
Along with others refusing to return to the Uk...claiming it is a less desireable unfortune for us thst we are stuck with a few that know better as well.

curious79 · 31/05/2026 16:06

Is this the same Balkans people who were shooting one another into mass graves and committing horrendous war crimes in the 90s? Yes, I’ve always thought they were much better than us. Ffs

EmeraldShamrock000 · 31/05/2026 16:12

In Spain when they clear up their dogs mess, they rinse the pavement with a squirting bottle of soapy water, the rubbish is never left for long to avoid cockroaches the area, the beaches are cleaned every night, the communities de weed the pavements. It works well even in the poorer communities.

SocialistMummy · 31/05/2026 15:13

They don't have Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage abroad - so yes!

Wasn’t the French equivalent a certain Jean-Marie Le Pen?

We invented Harry Potter, and nobody can say the rest of the world took it and made it better, like they did with other British things, like football, and the railways.

I think this when I go to Italy. I always say to my partner, ‘The Italians have really got their shit together’. The culture, the food, the wine, the clothes, the language…it all feels so relaxed yet exuberant.

They really, really haven’t. Pay is low, taxes are high, they’re taxed from the first € they earn, no zero band. Strikes are frequent, anything that requires a government official to work on it works at a snails pace or not at all. The tourist places look lovely generally but in most cities and towns there’s masses of graffiti, and high crime areas just like in parts of the U.K. Racism is rife.

It’s lovely to visit, but it’s just like the U.K. under the surface.

Coffeeandbooks88 · 31/05/2026 16:16

I hate to say it but the worst areas for us tend to be where they have a high immigration community. It seems to have gone to shit really badly. One area I know Roma live and they dump all the rubbish on the pavement. Grim.

I went to Malta, some years back, and flew back early because it was so dirty and grim.

stayput · 31/05/2026 16:20

My MIL was from another country and she was vile.

It's weird that you think people are 'better' if they're good looking and well dressed. The kids probably behave because otherwise they're hit.

Maybe you should just move abroad if it's so great everywhere else OP? Personally I think it's really beautiful and very lovely where I live. I don't really care if they people around me are good looking and dress well though.

mindutopia · 31/05/2026 14:26

I’m American (also British and live in the UK). Trust me, we are not better. 90% of my American friends wish they had my dual citizenship and lived in the UK. I have lived in 4 countries as an adult. Very happy to have settled in the UK and would not want to raise my children in any of the others.

Sorry but I don't think a single person thinks Americans are better than Brits 😂😂 I think op was talking about European destinations

igelkott2026 · 31/05/2026 16:28

Well I've just been in a (Western) European country which had a significant litter problem.

I suspect the clean places pay people to pick up litter while our councils are always claiming poverty and don't do it and rely on litter pickers (and also don't empty bins often enough so people leave their stuff next to a full bin and then the foxes or whatever get at it).

MrsHeathcliff26 · 31/05/2026 16:28

I am in Italy now and have just come from Copenhagen and Japan and as an Aussie we could definitely learn a thing or two about manners and order from the latter and about style and beauty in general from the Danes. The world is a big place and we can all visit and bring a little of that back home with us.

MidnightMeltdown · 31/05/2026 16:28

It’s also a discipline problem. From what have seen, European parents are, on average, much, much stricter with kids and young people than British parents.

neilisbangingoutthetunes · 31/05/2026 16:29

Agreed OP - Europeans are just somehow better than us fat, pasty, badly-dressed Brits and our feral children. Thankfully whenever I go abroad, the locals simply cannot believe I'm British because I'm so well-dressed (in tasteful, muted tones) and my children so vitamin-sufficient.

Mithral · 31/05/2026 16:37

The British exceptionalism is hilarious. It even applies to negatives.

No you're not particularly worse than anywhere else FFS.

I've lived lots of places and now live in a lovely bit of the UK. The driving is better here than lots of countries, there is less violent crime than lots of countries, you're reasonably high up the obesity charts but not at the top. I love the fashion here compared to my home town but I'm comparing a small town to a big city which isn't fair.

SuddenlyBecoming · 31/05/2026 16:37

OP If you really believe it, then try to inact the changes you need to create what you are seeing

MasterBeth · 31/05/2026 16:40

Lunde · 31/05/2026 14:41

I think that other countries - especially Europe - have a better attitude to vocational training and having a trained workforce for all sorts of jobs. Working in shops/restaurants is not looked down on as it is in the UK. All sorts of vocational courses are included as A-level studies - hotel, restaurant, tourism, retail etc.

For example I was trying to buy a toaster in a small town Denmark and the shop assistent who approached me explained she was on her final placement for the Retail Programme so was it OK if she served me "by herself". She proceeded to give me a run down on all the toasters in the shop, functions, price, pros and cons etc. I can't imagine that in the UK.

Good. Who needs an in-depth conversation to buy a toaster? Give me an Argos catalogue and a pen and let's get on with it.
