People from other countries - they’re just better than us, aren’t they?

I’m on holiday in the Balkans and like everytime I go overseas, it’s difficult not to conclude people from other countries are just better than us.

Immaculately kept, litter free, great service in bars and restaurants by experienced staff, polite well behaved kids eating out in restaurants, not a screen in sight. Everyone generally better looking, better dressed.

Or do I have rose tinted holiday goggles on?

@Mithral I still think it’s not quite the same. In the US you aren’t looked down on for flaunting your wealth & doing well.

Maybe it’s an insecurity and the fact our wages are so stagnant

Depends who you hang out with.

BurntBroccoli · 31/05/2026 17:57

Yet another UK bashing thread…!

likelysuspect · 31/05/2026 17:38

Its a self loathing thing, again, probably got many layers to it. No one wants to do better or be better or have better standards. Its quite strange

Agreed. It’s not just things like the education tax or anti business owner legislation either where it manifests. I remember two teenage girls being interviewed who had burnt down a furniture shop a few years ago. When asked why they did it “because they are rich people” they responded, then looked at the camera as if it was totally obvious.

Have you been drinking?

It's very revealing who has only been to tourist places abroad. I remember another thread where someone was complaining that UK public transport was uniquely smelly. Genuinely funny to me.

How condescending. You didn't ask, if you had asked me, I would have told you that I have lived abroad

The French are definitely better at rioting

Oh leave us out of it ,s’il vous plaît 😂

The Great Smoky mountains, I'm off there soon can't wait.

We went 20 years ago and still talk about how great it was. You can get good food in rural petrol stations. The people are so friendly

We love it we are staying in Gatlinburg for a week. We have been all over the USA but keep returning there.

Kelticgold · 31/05/2026 18:19

Wait, aren’t children offered a coffee and a cigarette as soon as they step into a bar in other countries? Not the behaviour I would like to copy.

Mousespoons · 31/05/2026 18:19

Sweeping generalisation, but I have found in many European countries that fewer people seem conditioned to bag and bin dog poo in public areas.

Snobby about who?

European families tend not to go on AI holidays (Im actually talking about Italian/Spanish/French as they are the cultures I have family in so perhaps not 'european' as a whole)

The families from Europe that go on those sorts of holidays tend not to be the ones who would have better standards for their kids. Its not really the norm that the average Spanish child runs riot at dinner or uses screens. There are always anomalies.

okay, maybe spanish children but the french and italian kids behaviour at the finnish ski resorts I’ve been have been to were the worst i’ve witnessed. And they made up most of the nationalities there.

With regards to OP, customer service in Greece was shocking when trying to locate our bags when they didn’t make the plane at airport - shouting and waving arms at us for something completely not our fault. That wouldn’t fly here in the uk 😂 It was nice in the shops but service staff there were largely Bosnian. Also spanish customer service - being ignored when it’s time to get bill in an empty restaurant, or trying to get a refill etc. They literally be standing watching us and when I look at them nicely and they could clearly see drinks/plates were empty would just walk away to another part. This wasn’t malicious I don’t think, just lazy and was before the anti - british protests of last couple of years.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/05/2026 18:22

One thing is Almost certainly better in Denmark, according to a Dane who dh met at one of his professional do’s. Foreigners are not allowed to buy property in Denmark unless they’ve actually lived there, full time, for 5 years.

The Dane told dh that it was a measure to stop Germans buying up most of the property on their extensive coastline, and obviously whacking prices up.

But given EU rules, they couldn’t say ‘No Germans’ so they just said ‘No foreigners’ instead.

@likelysuspect I've been unfortunate enough to share hostels with French Teens/young men and they piss all over the bathroom. Paris is very sexyally threatening for young women and not because of immigration. So Soain has different classes of people, but Brits are all the same? Again, I've been unfortunate enough to be on holiday over Spanish bank holidays, we ended up eating outside the hotel. They won't be told to smoke in confined areas, either.

Parisienne123 · 31/05/2026 18:26

BigElderflower · 31/05/2026 17:22

Yes. There's definitely a coldness, arrogance and sense of entitlement that you see in many English people that you don't see in other cultures.

Have you ever actually been to Paris? 😆

Again leave us out of this please 😂
TBH The thing I love about the French (once you get used to it ) is that they are frank. They say what they mean generally and they can seem cold until they make their mind up about you . Smiling usually gets a smile back though and its objectively not fair to say they are entitled 🙃

You have to ask Spanish staff to come over, they wont interfere unless you gesture over.

It has been handed down from the colonialism days

Are you joking? Have you met any Europeans? And I don’t mean hospitality staff in tourist areas who are paid to grin and look benignly upon unruly kids.

I deliberately used lower case in high street, @catspyjamas1 .
Stevenage Old Town is lovely. The town centre isn't a shit hole but it's probably not the prettiest in the UK.

Slough has some lovely parks and is very close to Eton and Windsor.

Old Town, Stevenage - Visit Herts

You seem to be behind the times @SmashThePatriarchy .

Edited

Herschel park in Slough used to be lovely, but Salt hill was not so nice. Obviously the Brunel bus station was Slough's crowning glory.

Yes exactly, in fact our European families think that the English are odd for always smiling and saying please and thank you. They think its fake

Hoppity80 · 31/05/2026 18:40

In France outside big cities and major tourist spots the people generally look not unlike average brits. A bit stocky and wearing Primark/Asda equivalent in my experience

Indeed.

Parisians are usually seen as arrogant and entitled by other French people. And I think it is well deserved...

Good. Who needs an in-depth conversation to buy a toaster? Give me an Argos catalogue and a pen and let's get on with it.

The Argos catalogue - aka the laminated book of dreams. ( Thanks Bill Bailey)

Exactly! I'm from a European country and (like the UK) the people in the rich bits look better and that's the only place anyone goes on holiday to.

I live in a lovely leafy bit of SW London and the people are mostly slim and well dressed and you never see kids on screens in my local restaurants. I don't happen to think this makes them better people by the way but if that's what floats your boat you just need to live in a more expensive part of the UK and you can emulate the Paris experience closer to home. With less dog shit actually.
