Sharing room on a work trip

HandsFaceTeeth · 30/05/2026 19:38

I’m going on a work trip that involves an overnight stay. On the original request form, I said I did not want to share a room and would happily pay the difference to have my own room. A recent email said that attendees would be sharing twin rooms in the hotel. I do not know anyone else attending. AIBU to not want to share a room with a stranger? I don’t even share a room when I go away with good friends!

I travel for work a LOT and it's not a company with a lot of money and I would NEVER share a room. Utter madness.

Papster · 30/05/2026 21:54

Go to see HR
Show them this

www.scientificamerican.com/article/are-sleepwalking-killers-conscious/

Tell them in confidence that you sleepwalk and have been known to commit acts of violence. Luckily your DH is trained in self defence and keeps restraints at hand at night.

Theres no way you’ll be made to share.

If word gets out you have the dual pleasure of telling colleagues it was a ruse that worked and of suing your company for a breach of medical confidentiality

Ineffable23 · 30/05/2026 21:56

There are a very small number of circumstances when I would consider this - basically is it broadly speaking a jolly, would I otherwise be unable to attend, can I share with someone I know reasonably well, and is it only a couple of nights? The answer would need to be yes to all of the above for me to be prepared to do it, otherwise it would be a no from me.

TheChosenTwo · 30/05/2026 20:01

Absolutely no way.
im shocked this has been blithely accepted by others tbh.
I hate sharing a room with anyone at any time (I tolerate dh 😂), would never share with my dc on holiday even for one night once they got over the age of about 2.
I sleep naked, that’s not appropriate with colleagues in the room for all manner of reasons. But also my time is my time when I’m not working. You are entitled to privacy.

So you put your 3 year old in a room without an adult?

Zanatdy · 30/05/2026 21:59

Our company would never expect adults to share rooms. I sleep so badly, I just wouldn’t go.

BCBird · 30/05/2026 22:00

No. This is unacceptable

Millions of people do this every day.... ?

It's not like PP said the 3 year old would be in their own hotel room. She only said she wouldn't share a room with them. So presumably they would go to places like holiday apartments or cottages or caravans or whatever, a d the children sleep in their own room. Not have them sleeping in Room 432, whilst she sleeps in room 138.

Haven’t you ever been in a hotel with your kids?

Loads of people have never been in hotels... And loads of people haven't had family holidays in hotels, there are many other choices for family accommodation.

BCBird · 30/05/2026 22:00

This.

Don’t make excuses or try and meet them half way. The more you say the more they can objection handle.

No. End of.

Your reason are your own!

MauriceTheMussel · 30/05/2026 22:03

No way.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 30/05/2026 22:03

The first business trip I went on was in the late 80s and I've been on countless others since. I've seen the insides of a lot of hotels. At no point has anyone ever suggested I share. If they need me to be there they can pay for me to have my own room.

Buzzlightfear · 30/05/2026 22:10

I travel a lot for work and not a chance would I do this. I once shared a 2 bedroom apartment with a colleague who was also a good friend, that was perfect for a longish trip but not a cat in hell's chance would we have shared an actual bedroom.

One of my colleagues once refused a twin room to himself because he wouldn't sleep in a single bed. That's probably a bit excessive 😄but you're definitely not being unreasonable

WallaceinAnderland · 30/05/2026 22:14

No, no, hell no.

And they can't make you.

hahabahbag · 30/05/2026 22:17

We always did at work, was a condition on going on nice trips, typically we only needed for instance 3 staff really for an exhibition but we would allow 6 to go all expenses paid including entertaining budget the compromise is sharing. It’s not that I liked it but my direct colleague and would have been one of other. And by good trips I mean Las Vegas, San Francisco, various European cities. Hotels were always really expensive due to the conference happening

Chilly80 · 30/05/2026 22:20

Nope completely inappropriate

FortyFacedFuckers · 30/05/2026 22:21

Other than my partner or child I would never share a room not even with my best friend of 30 years or my sister never mind a colleague

TeenLifeMum · 30/05/2026 22:23

Years ago I worked for the daily mail group and they wouldn’t let dh and I share a room (we were only dating at that point) for a training course. We had a room each but only used one 😂). I will not ever share a room with a colleague - that’s so unacceptable unless you’re in a relationship.

dewne · 30/05/2026 22:24

This has come up before. Exactly this thread.

PurpleThistle7 · 30/05/2026 22:25

Zero chance. I’d die on this hill

LovelyBranches · 30/05/2026 22:26

My team regularly have to do overnighters. I have worked there for 14 years. Nobody shares a room and nobody should have to.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 30/05/2026 22:26

Not a chance. You need privacy to wind down, fart when you want, scratch yourself and wander around in your underwear. Or at least I do. I dislike even sharing a room with a friend.

Cleanornotclean · 30/05/2026 22:26

I can’t see how any big firm would allow this with people you work daily with let alone strangers which is why @HandsFaceTeeth has said she will speak to her HR

No firm would accept liability for this

Millions don’t in hotels. But you are right, I assumed a hotel when it could be a villa etc

I mean, millions of people have heir 3 year old sleeping in a different room to them. Like in their house. :)

Yes, but the poster said while on a trip, so it was clear I wasn’t talking about at home.
I have already said I was mistaken to assume she meant a hotel rather than a villa or other holiday home accommodation
