To delay Mirena Coil fitting - because of upcoming event?

mumandmumber · 29/05/2026 08:21

I’m due to get a Mirena fitting next week. 10 days later I have a big family wedding to attend for a weekend.

Reading lots about spotting, and heavier bleeding for weeks after insertion, I’m wondering whether to delay a month as I really could do without that over that weekend as I can be a really heavy bleeder and my dresses are all very pale!

Currently, wedding should fall mid cycle - all being regular.

I’d just get it done. I can only speak to the copper coil but it was a total non-event. I had a teeny bit of spotting and light cramping for a couple hours after. The only difference with Mirena is the hormones, but I wouldn’t delay starting new hormonal contraception because I was going to a wedding a few weeks later. Maybe if it was MY wedding! I did take my pills without a break that month (back when we took pill breaks) because I was due my ‘period’ on my wedding and honeymoon. But otherwise I’d just crack on. Better than an unwanted pregnancy at someone’s wedding!

If it was me I’d delay it since it’s not that long a delay, and it’d give you peace of mind for the wedding - I got the Mirena fitted in January and I had some bleeding and spotting every day for around 6 weeks, plus intermittent cramping. The first period I got after getting it fitted was still pretty heavy (I got it to manage my heavy periods), but it’s thankfully totally settled down now and my periods are way lighter! However, as I say, the spotting and bleeding for that first while was annoying. Everyone is different though of course!

Hayfield123 · 29/05/2026 09:45

I had one fitted and apart from a little discomfort during the fitting, I had no problems. I will add that I have never suffered from heavy periods or tummy ache

BitOutOfPractice · 29/05/2026 09:47

I had one fitted on Wednesday (plus a couple of other procedures under GA) and the bleeding has already stopped.

mumandmumber · 29/05/2026 10:57

Sorry to drip feed but i was trying to keep my OP simple and short. But to add, I am getting a mirena more for the (hopefully) benefits of managing painful & heavy periods (I have Adenomyosis) and as the progesterone part of HRT (Peri) - rather than for the contraception side. Lets just say the risk of me getting pregnant is null.

Thanks for the info. This seems to be the common story.. hence wanting to delay..!

Thank you for adding that info re not having period pain before anyway etc. It’s important i think! Unfortunately I am getting one because of heavy painful periods and it does make sense that one’s previous history affects the outcome.

Thanks - may I ask - when in your cycle did you have your first inserted, and did you bleed at all after?

in fact if anyone else shares/contributes - would be really interesting if people could share:

  1. what your periods & pain were like before mirena
  2. at what point in your cycle you had it inserted
  3. details on bleeding etc following insertion and when/if you still bleed

thanks all - I think I will just wait but would just be useful to know anyway

I got mine due to unmanageable heavy painful periods. I had a light period for about a week and cramping for a few days then I was fine. I wouldn't delay personally.

Very interesting and hopeful!

Would you mind sharing at what point in your cycle you had insertion and also roughly how old you are? Or if you’re in peri/menopause etc?

Had very heavy and flooding periods and eventually had womb ablation.

It was light bleeding for 6 months, then I carried on having light periods monthly. The coil threads made me itch like hell so it felt like I had thrush.

Endured it for 18 months, the itching magically stopped the day after I had it out.

Thanks for the detail. Never heard that about the threads being itchy.
Sorry to hear it didnt work well for you

I have Adenomyosis and had one fitted last year. No idea as to which point in my cycle as v erratic (peri). No issues at all and only light spotting for a few weeks after insertion. I’d just get it done!

enjoy the wedding 💍

SunnyRedSnail · 29/05/2026 11:50

I had the Mirena fitted a few months ago and had a couple of days of very light spotting afterwards. I just wore period pants as they're so comfortable.

I haven't particularly had a period since. It's been brilliant. The hormone side has helped with peri symptoms too!

Sorry no idea it was about 17 years ago

ive had no kids so insertion was very painful, but quick

i think I had a bit of light spotting for a few days, but that was all

Pinkflamingo10 · 29/05/2026 11:52

Had a mirena, bleeding stopped after 3 days (inserted on day 1 of cycle) and then I had zero periods for 5 years it was awesome.

I don't think this is uncommon - I bled for four months, and had pain. It wasn't just 'spotting' either. Had it removed and the bleeding and pain stopped the next day. I would delay it until after the wedding, just to be on the safe side.

Renamedyetagain · 29/05/2026 12:05

You can't predict as everyone is so different. So I'd delay. I had v heavy periods and have bled on and off heavily since insertion 3 wks ago. Also in perimenopause
