What have your kids eaten today?

I have 2 kids age 3 and 6 and I often have wobbles over whether I’m feeding them enough or the right things…

So a non shaming thread where I can see what ‘average’ looks like would be helpful!

I’ll start because it’s annoying when OP doesn’t do that:

Breakfast - bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese (NOT a normal breakfast, it was about to go off! They both had 1 half of the bagel as the top had ‘yucky seeds on’)

Snack - Apple, handful of crackers

Lunch - Bowl of pasta from last night dinner with a jar sauce, carrot and crumbly cheese

Snacks - melon, chocolate rice cakes (2 each)

Dinner will be chicken curry with rice.

They still seem to act like I’m starving them!

My teen, currently in the middle of his GCSE:

Breakfast - museli, with pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, flax seed, bee pollen, semi skimmed milk and berries. Followed an hour later with 2 scramlbed eggs on 1 slice of toast.

Snack - apple

Lunch - ham and lettuce sandwich on a wholemeal roll, satsuma and yellow pepper on the side

Snack - 3 weetabix, handful of mixed nuts with semi skimmed milk

Dinner - will be steak, home made sweet potato fries, mushroom, and purple brocoli

He will likely have peanut butter on toast for supper.

For context he is 6ft 1, plays sports and bike rides and is very slim. I think i should have bought shares in cereal when he was younger.

User98456 · 28/05/2026 17:32

Four year old, solo parenting, day 4 of half term, not a great eater 😵‍💫

Breakfast - cereal and brioche (homemade brioche but brioche nonetheless!!!)

Morning snack - carrot cake (met a friend for coffee, they stole some of mine)

Lunch - Broccoli and green vegetable soup, ham wrap, cucumber and carrot batons (cucumber and carrot firmly rejected)

Afternoon snack - Apple and peanut butter

Dinner - Roast chicken with mash, peas (maybe eaten 4??), tenderstem broccoli (inhaled broccoli soup, refused to eat this broccoli) and gravy

After dinner - Natural yogurt with honey and frozen berries

I’d say yours are doing absolutely fine OP!! I’m a year 1 teacher and I’ve seen kids thrive on plain baked potatoes and literally nothing else 🤦🏻‍♀️ I give mine vitamin drops and trust they’ll get less fussy as they get older - I eat everything now and was SUCH a poor eater when younger!

Woahtherehoney · 28/05/2026 17:39

that sounds fine OP but I think kids sometimes are just like bottomless pits aren’t they!

My 7 year old DSS is AuDHD so sometimes can be very weird with and around food but today has been a good day. He generally is more of a snacker than a meal eater but does eat quite healthy snacks and eats A LOT of cucumber.

B - cinnamon cereal
L - cheese and ham toastie with grapes, strawberries and 2 satsumas
D - ham and vegetable tart with potatoes and cucumber
S - cucumber, some crisps, a couple of ice poles

Teenager revising for A levels:

Breakfast 9am: Smoked salmon, cream cheese bagel thin.

Lunch 12pm: Rana mushroom tortellini with tomato mascarpone sauce.

Snack 2pm: M&s cream cheese stuffed red peppers.
(I don’t think there were any other snacks but she might have things in her bedroom).

Supper: 5pm: Steak on the bbq, watermelon, mint, cucumber feta salad, mangetout, carrots.

I guarantee she will want another full meal or a lot of snacks before bed but she’ll make it herself. We eat early as we intermittent fast most days.

ToffeePennie · 28/05/2026 17:48

11 year old
I think he had some Pokemon cereal for breakfast. Beyond that…I don’t think he’s had anything else.
8 year old
He had some strawberries this morning and I think he had a go ahead bar around lunch time. Again, beyond that he hasn’t had anything.
Ive only had a cold bacon sandwich all day. Husband had a slice of quiche and some bread and butter.
It’s not like everyone’s starving either. And they all know they can get food. But no one seems to want to eat in the holidays.

MsSmartShoes · 28/05/2026 17:58

10 year old dd:

Breakfast: Jordans country crisp with oat milk.

Lunch: Sausage, beans and chips.

Snack: Handful of chocolate chips

Dinner: Vegan aubergine and courgette mousaka and salad.

He's 14

The last few days he's pretty much lived off salad and cereal because it's been so hot.

LittleMerrymaid · 28/05/2026 18:24

68 year old granny and 2 grandchildren aged 4 and 6 for the day.

Breakfast - vegetable omelette with sourdough toast and butter

Snack - yoghurt

Lunch - pan fried salmon, baked potato, avacado salad and homemade dressing.

snack - mini sized bounty each plus mango slices

Dinner - roast chicken thighs, carrots, broccoli, mashed potato and gravy.

Calliopespa · 28/05/2026 18:28

I think it is pretty much ok OP.

If you were really wanting to tweak, I'd try to slip in at least one portion of greens each day, and I am not a fan of jar sauce as it is truly so easy to simmer your own cherry tomatoes (or even a tin of chopped tomatoes) and just blitz it to avoid all the stabilisers, salt and often sugar in a jar sauce! DC won't know the difference.

Mama1980 · 28/05/2026 18:36

Ds1 a 6’2” teen has eaten:

ALLLLL the ice lollies 😀

Peaceandcheese · 28/05/2026 18:46

Kids can eat an incredible amount of food. 4 year old today has had egg and soldiers for breakfast, usually has porridge. Lunch at nursery was a pasta dish with garlic bread. At home he’s had a plate of curry, rice and poppadoms followed by a bowl of strawberries and blueberries. He’s in the bath now, planning what his supper will be! He usually has something like a banana, yoghurt, oatcakes and cheese, peanut butter sandwich etc for supper. There have been evenings where he’s had all of these even after a big plate of dinner!

Oaksandapples · 28/05/2026 18:46

2 year old and 6 year old

Cereal with milk
Banana
Tuna sandwich with cucumber and tomatoes
An orange
A biscuit
Some chicken pieces
Beef stir fry
An ice lolly

They both eat almost equal amounts despite the age difference. Two year old ate slightly less of the stir fry.

Wow! Their parents must be thrilled at the quality of grandparent care here, I would be! 😋

Thank you for the compliment, Twister. The two I had today are the youngest of eight — the eldest is almost 21. I’m lucky that I’m given free rein with all of my brood, and it’s just as well I am because I could never get to grips with baby-led weaning. It scared the bejesus out of me, despite me trying to take it in my stride, and I was told very early on, “Just feed them the way you fed us.” So I did, and still do.

I have managed to adopt a lot of the new ways of doing things/ideas and I have the greatest respect for young parents today who have to know so much.

Would you believe that I breastfed 5 children, one of them for almost 3 years, but it was only when I became a granny for the first time that I learned how breast feeding actually worked. My daughter explained it to me. I’m in awe of the things my daughters and daughters in law know.
