Ironing before packing - am I wasting time?

Flounge · 27/05/2026 17:51

Going on holiday at the weekend. I saw DH putting several unironed shirts and t shirts into the case.

I told him he should iron them and he looked at me like I have two heads. He said why would he iron them when they get creased in the case and he has to iron them on holiday before he wears them anyway.

I then said he should get the car cleaned before we go and he looked really confused. Not a priority and it’s just going to sit on the drive for 10 days, and he’ll take it if there’s time.

Who is right here? Am I wasting time on pointless tasks and making life more difficult for the sake of it?

AIBU?

Well, I don’t iron anything so I wouldn’t bother at either stage. If he’s going to iron on holiday though (although I can’t imagine anything worse), then I agree with him.

noworklifebalance · 27/05/2026 17:53

Team husband.
Pre iron your things if you want to.
Really don’t see the point of cleaning the car.

ThatGreenFawn · 27/05/2026 17:54

Team husband here too. Really cant see the point of cleaning the car if its going to be sat on the drive.

MrsOni · 27/05/2026 17:56

YABU to iron at all, especially casual t-shirts and things on holiday.

And yeah, what's the point of fussing about cleaning a car if you aren't going to be using it for 2 weeks? Just do it when you get back.

likelysuspect · 27/05/2026 17:58

I dont iron anything in real life but when on holiday we like to look crisp and smart

So I never book anywhere without an iron and I follow this up before booking to double check, we went somewhere once where they had an iron and no ironing board!!

We sometimes iron before going and I find that even though things get creased in the case, because they have been ironed they drop out when hung up (I also take spare hangers)

But things that dont drop out I do iron before we go out

I never clean the car no. Pointless. I dont live in it.

tinyladybird · 27/05/2026 17:59

I did this for the first time ever this year..... Dare I say it the clothes were less creased in the case than usual 😂 my husband would wear something creased within an inch of it's life so I started with his stuff and ended up doing everything!

tiramisugelato · 27/05/2026 18:00

I've never ironed a thing in my life. I seem to have managed just fine.

I also never clean my car unless it's in for a service and the garage do it for me.

BashfulClam · 27/05/2026 18:07

I don’t iron anyway and I always refused to be like my mum knocking her pan in ironing everything before packing it all whilst my dad sat on his arse. She’d then iron when she got on holiday too as the case had creased things. Service told me off for not ironing DH’s hoodie, I asked why would I iron it and she snapped ‘because you’re a bloody woman!’ Well I didn’t know we operated irons with our vaginas!!! I work 40 hours a week, the ironing can go and fuck itself.

DH is responsible for his own packing so if he forgets his knickers that not my problem.

OriginalSkang · 27/05/2026 18:10

Both of you are unreasonable for ironing anyway. Especially on holiday

Why do you want to get the car cleaned if you aren't taking it? I dont understand that logic at all?

abracadabra1980 · 27/05/2026 18:11

You are doing what is called 'nagging'. Not everyone does things how you would, and I would be rolling clothing up to pack in any event. Keeps them crease free in the main if already ironed or they aren't cotton.

PinkyFlamingo · 27/05/2026 18:13

Ok what's your reasonig about getting the car cleaned?

jackstini · 27/05/2026 18:19

Absolutely pointless ironing before packing

Don’t really own much that needs ironing, just hang it in the bathroom when you have a shower and creases will drop out

Would wash the car if going on a uk holiday. Why in earth would you wash it to leave it on the drive?!

Life’s too short - yes you are wasting time on pointless tasks. Do something you love instead. F the ironing and read a great book in the bath with a glass of wine

WonderingWanda · 27/05/2026 18:22

I do iron things like shirts and t shirts before they go in the suitcase. If you pack well they will stay pretty crisp and then you can hant them up in the shower and any creases will fall out. I think dh had ironed a shirt on holiday but only because we were going somewhere smart. I wouldn't wash the car but dh does think I'm nuts for cleaning the house before we go. I never want to return home to a dirty messy house so like to clean everything.

DancingCactusFlower · 27/05/2026 18:25

I find things pack better if ironed as they are flatter rather than ironing for aesthetic reasons on arrival. Don’t understand the car washing,

I wish I could get away with getting the car cleaned once a year. You should have it done once a month for good maintenance.
However back to the OP's point, there is no point in doing it if its going to be sat on the driveway for 10 days.

dementedpixie · 27/05/2026 18:26

I iron a few pairs of linen shorts/trousers but nothing else. Theres an iron and ironing board in our villa but it wont be getting used!

What do you mean for good maintenance? What do you think happens if you don't get it cleaned?

BeautySimplified · 27/05/2026 18:27

DH irons all my stuff when he’s packing. I’m rubbish at packing so I leave my stuff out and he does it, we iron anything that needs it while we’re there.

Crinkle77 · 27/05/2026 18:27

You could always go and get car cleaned if it bothers you that much.

Consistent maintenance prevents dirt, salt, road grime, bird droppings, and tree sap from bonding with your vehicle's clear coat. This preserves your paint, prevents rust, and maintains long-term resale value.

Meh, it's 11 years old and looks just fine.

AffableApple · 27/05/2026 18:30

You're being a fussy fusspot. Do what you like with your own clothes. Let him do what he likes with his. Take the car to be cleaned if you want it cleaned for unknown holiday-related reasons. (I need a holiday just reading this.) Have a lovely time away😎

OriginalSkang · 27/05/2026 18:30

I think its been about two years since mine has been washed now. There is nothing wrong with the paint, no rust..

Some people have more time and money than sense!

Agreed! Plus I'm never going to sell it so the resale value is irrelevant. I'll drive it until it goes to the big scrapyard in the sky.

JillThePlantKiller · 27/05/2026 18:31

I iron, and either fold or roll depending on the item. Creases aren’t a problem. On holidays, I use the laundry service and it comes back ironed.

It wouldn’t occur to me to wash the car, but I do make sure the front garden is weeded and watered so it doesn’t look obviously unkempt and abandoned. The first time we went away after moving here, I came back to 2 ft high weeds that had sprouted up between the cobbles. Not sure what the point of washing the car is though?
