AIBU to be upset my parents walked the dog in this heat?

My parents are looking after our dog this week whilst we are abroad. They’re not dog owners themselves so I had messaged them a few days ago reminding them to not walk above roughly 20’c with the dog as that’s the rule we go by in summer. I wouldn’t expect them to be able to walk at 7or 8am as they are in their early seventies so presumed they would use common sense and just skip any walks . Checked ring camera for a parcel today and seen they walked our dog at 10.30 in 26’c.
I've called them out on it and they’re acting like I’m being completely over the top and that the dog was fine. AIBU?
The dog is not a risk breed or elderly but I’m upset at the principle of ignoring what I’ve asked.

Saw a dog collapsed in a woods yesterday from heat. It does happen
Your ignorance is showing

That’s not what she asked

And have them incessantly whining and scratching at the back door as mine would? No thanks.

Yes people need to realise that not all dogs are the same. My dog is italian greyhound adjacent, looking like a victorian orphan when the temperature goes below 12° but very comfortable in an pizza oven.

I didn't take him out much yesterday between 9am and 6pm, just a wee on the tree in front of my flat and back upstairs.
Well, it wasn't a nice evening.
I have been relentlessly bullied, balls thrown at me, loud whines and the occasional demand bark, some socks have been reported missing in action, and we had a fatality, a well-loved Muji ballpen that has been slaughtered.

We went on a long walk at 10pm before I crashed and cried myself to sleep. 28° in my bedroom. Where was he? In his fluffy cave bed.

YABU this whole hysteria about not walking dogs is ridiculous. Mine loves the sun and stands at the window and whines to be walked

My dog over heats very easily in the sun and he's not even an "at risk breed" or an elderly dog so I don't think it's hysteria at all. Just because your particular dog handles it fine..... jeez

EmeraldShamrock000 · Today 12:05

Yabu. Hire a professional pet minder next time.

StrictlyCoffee · Today 12:07

Pay for kennels if you’re that bothered. It was 26 degrees not 36

Even when it’s someone else’s dog?
as my own dog yes I can decide. But if I was looking after someone else’s dog who is not experienced with dogs and they’d asked me not to walk in the heat and then I did, is that just rude?

No more rude than getting free pet care then whining about it

Actually here (south east) it was 34 degrees. London where OP is (I think) was higher than that
Not everywhere has the same temperature- shocker I know!

The OP herself said it was 26 degrees.

But surely that applies the other way too? Just because your dog struggles, doesn’t mean they all do.

Poor dog. I bet they were not walking bare foot down the pavement. It always amazes me how many people take their dogs out in really hot weather.

I saw someone out running with her dog this morning when it was already about 24. She was wearing long leggings though, so maybe neither of them feel the heat!

Genuine question - people have dogs in hot countries. What happens if you have a dog in Australia or Kenya or somewhere else that's hot for large parts of the year? Are you suggesting these dogs should never get walked?

it's still cooler in the morning and evening so you'd walk them then I presume

A lot of dogs do though. Her parents shouldn't have risked the dogs safety when he isn't their dog, wouldn't know how he'd react to the heat and when they were specifically asked not to. Your own dog is a different matter, I presume you're a responsible owner who wouldn't put their dog at risk and knows their limits.

And posters saying she's in the wrong because they're doing the OP a favour by looking after him are out of order imo, it isn't ok to put a living creature in danger just because you haven't charged for looking after him fgs

Do they? Because the stats would say that only a tiny percentage of dogs end up in the vets with heat related issues and even fewer die because of it.

I actually agree with you that her parents shouldn’t have gone against her wishes, I just don’t think it requires the mass hysteria seen on here. Just a “mum, please don’t walk him in that heat again, he struggles”. would be fine.

I think 20 degrees is very low to not take them out above if on grass or in woods, but 26 degrees on hot pavements is too hot.

Spottylittledog · Today 12:50

Far out. You lot would not survive Australia

You can always tell the UK weather by the amount of dog and hot weather posts on Facebook.

I used to take my small dog out in the low to mid 20s as he was fine in it, anything 27 and over we would stay in. It would depend on other factors though, today says 26 degrees but it's breezy today so feels cooler. We are lucky though, live near a huge wooded area with lots of water. He was a nightmare at home though on hot days as he would go and lie on the patio so we would have to keep moving him indoors.

It's not. I walked barefoot on the pavement when it was 26C and the pavement was pleasantly warm.

WelshCakeLover · Today 13:06

to be honest I was incredibly shocked to see so many dogs last week being walked while we were on holiday in Spain. it was about 30 degrees at the time but I suppose they are used to it. did feel for the poor things though. id be upset OP xx

rosie1959 · Today 13:15

I can understand why you are upset OP I have my daughter’s dog at the moment I would not dream of taking him out in those temperatures. We were up and out around 6 as it would be silly to take him out later. He is a big dog and the pavement can get far too hot.
