Am I insane?

I have a drinks fridge, always stocked with cans and bottles of water, occasionally beer.

In a heatwave I give out drinks to delivery drivers and the bin men.

My friend thinks I'm insane.

If you were delivering all day would you welcome a cold drink?

YABU - yes you are insane.
YANBU - you are doing a nice thing.

I give out water, I hate drinking warm water on a hot day myself plus multi drop drivers are sometimes paid per drop.

youdon · 26/05/2026 17:12

I'm a delivery driver and I've been offered so many cold drinks these last few days and it's so nice of people to do this 🙂
My favourite was a customer gave me some homemade apple juice - it was so good!

It's not particularly edgy to point out that what this woman is doing (giving stuff away and then posting about it) is buying self-esteem.

What a worryingly misanthropic world view you have. I’m old, twisted and cynical, but even I believe in altruism. The op is genuinely doing a nice thing, and is only posting because her friend - who seems to share your warped outlook - made her feel awkward. “Buying self-esteem” my arse!

Honestly, don't give this poster any more attention

When I was in Spain the delivery guys carried a new sofa up nine flights of stairs because it wouldn't fit in the lift and they didn't even accept a glass of water. I don't know how they do it, I guess they are more used to these temperatures there but their bodies need hydrating just as much as anyone else's.

DP is a HGV driver and always offers delivery guys a cold bottle of water, I think it’s a lovely thing to do but honestly would never have thought of it myself

sashh · 27/05/2026 05:24

OK I'm not insane, that's good.

Thank you for the people who defended me against the nutcase, although I do think those ideas might make for the start of a horror film.

Why wouldn’t you offer someone a cold drink in this sort of weather?!
I always offer hot or cold drinks/refills of their own flasks/bottles to our grocery delivery drivers.

Likewise whenever we have tradespeople working in the house I regularly offer drinks throughout the day, and always leave a supply of drink making bits and biscuits out on the side so they can help themselves - this is normal behaviour surely?!

Humble-bragger

I gave my grocery delivery driver an ice lolly this week. He did a dance 😁 And I offered him bottled water, but he had some. Is this not just basic politeness?! How far this country is falling, if people think this is an odd thing to do.

Whataflippincircus · 30/05/2026 21:11

It’s a really lovely thing to do.

Humble-bragger

How is demonstrating basic politeness, a humble brag?! It takes some crazy insecurity to think people are boasting about it. More accurately, it is humbly trying to continue the normalisation of manners and thoughtfulness.

Ooooh I'm so kind I am, I think I'll go on Mumsnet and gather some praise for it

There’s no hope for you. What a thoroughly miserable outlook on life.

I gave the Amazon man a cold bottle of water and an ice lolly last week! He was driving an un aircon’d van (windows were open) and the sweat was dripping from him poor bloke! He was over the moon! I don’t do it all the time but in adverse weather like last week, absolutely, it’s a lovely kind thing to do.

I think someone needs to be a little kinder! Give it a try and you might not be so bitter and twisted!
