Am I insane?

sashh · 25/05/2026 06:43

I have a drinks fridge, always stocked with cans and bottles of water, occasionally beer.

In a heatwave I give out drinks to delivery drivers and the bin men.

My friend thinks I'm insane.

If you were delivering all day would you welcome a cold drink?

YABU - yes you are insane.
YANBU - you are doing a nice thing.

I think that’s very kind of you, will be much appreciated I’m sure.

MajorSamanthaCarter · 25/05/2026 06:46

It's not unusual thing to do so no you're not insane.

tilypu · 25/05/2026 06:46

You are insane if you are giving them beer.

It's an unusual thing to do, sure, but it's very thoughtful and I'm sure it's appreciated.

Somethingbland · 25/05/2026 06:49

I think that's a lovely thing to do.

Being cynical I think such acts of kindness and consideration to strangers is becoming very rare. So it's great to hear of someone like yourself being so thoughtful.

Evaka · 25/05/2026 06:52

You're lovely and your friends are the weirdos.

Mydogisagentleman · 25/05/2026 06:59

Recently had 2 mattresses and a headboard delivered.
Different times, delivery men were surprised but pleased to be given cold drinks.

PinkPonyAnonymous · 25/05/2026 07:01

I see American influencers going in for this. A lot of them leave them at their door and I find that weird, but handing them out seems less weird.

Beck's blue alcohol free for the bin men, I'm not handing out alcohol don't worry.

My husband was an asda delivery driver. There is no air con in the vans and it is hard work lugging crates of bottled water etc around in this heat. The first thing he would tell me about when he got in the car was the nice person who gave him a drink or lolly. It really made his day. Thank you for doing this.

JustABean · 25/05/2026 07:13

Your not the only one we also keep cola in fridge and all ready. Our bin men thanks us every time but all I know is my hubby does a job where he always mentions how grateful he is when customers he is doing work for give him a drink in the heatwave as he ends up drinking his own supply quickly so returning it via the bin men lol

DilemmaDelilah · 25/05/2026 08:01

I have a box outside my front door with bottles of water and individually wrapped home made flapjacks. We are down a drive shared by 2 other houses and I have let the postmen/regular delivery drivers know that they are welcome to help themselves even if they are not delivering to us. Binmen don't get a look in unfortunately because we have to put our bins at the end of the drive. I started during lockdown when we just would not have been able to manage without deliveries.

I would always offer anyone working in our house/garden a hot or cold drink, depending on the time of year.

Yes I was brought up to always offer tea or coffee to plumbers / builders / kitchen fitters etc.

I'm disabled and when I started studying I had a specific chair delivered and it needed 'setting up' for me.

A lovely man came with the chair to do the fitting, it was about 3.30 / 4.00 pm I offered him drink and apparently I was the first person that day to offer.

He offered to take my old chair away because of the coffee.

As I mentioned I'm disabled so the binmen come in to the garden to get the bins and bring them back for me.

Like you, we have lots of people come to us to service medical equipment etc. I always offer them a drink (and say they can use the loo). Reading posts on here makes me realise that’s not the norm. Sad really.

Thebinisrightthere · 25/05/2026 08:45

You're not insane. Why on earth does she think you are? If they don't want one they can always say no

PoppieCock · 25/05/2026 08:49

I've been doing the same for years OP, as do a lot of my neighbours from what I can see.

I have my Morrisons delivered every week and I've now started giving out ice lollies 😁

FlippantlyShe · 25/05/2026 08:57

It sounds environmentally wasteful to me. Just offer them a glass of cold water, surely?

That takes time though and I know the delivery drivers are often on tight schedule. A bottle of water or a can of coke can be taken away.

Nope not insane or unusual.

I always offer delivery men, the cleaners of the communal area or gardeners of communal gardens a drink - especially in this weather.

but I’m also not very MN either because - shock horror - I’ll even let them use my loo 😂

LeftieRightsHoarder · 25/05/2026 20:28

You’re absolutely not being unreasonable, OP, and I’m glad whenever I hear about people doing this kind of thing.

Anyone working in our house is offered tea or coffee and biscuits. In hot weather I offer bottles of tap water to anyone working on the roads too. It’s just part of living in a society. Looking out for each other is good for everyone.

Jesus, they’re out in force tonight, must be the heat. The op sure as hell isn’t the creepy one here.

I agree! What's creepy about offering someone a cold can of something? Normal people won't read anything into it. You carry on, OP, it's a lovely idea

I don't agree but the confidence of this statement made me laugh.

It's nice, OP.

sprigatito · 25/05/2026 20:46

Creepy 😆 the heat brings ‘em out

I wouldn’t do it, I’m too reserved and curmudgeonly, but I think it’s a nice thing to do.

aLFIESMA · 25/05/2026 20:50

I do this too, also lollies!
