Airport security

Clearly the airport is the last place you should be stomping your feet and arguing with staff

but confiscating a really really bloody expensive liquid because the SEE THROUGH BOTTLE says 150ml and it’s clearly half empty - therefore under 100mls purely because the label says 150mls?!

And she didn’t throw it in the bin she put it on the shelf in front of her. Robbed, I was bloody robbed

AIBU - the rule is the liquid amount; not the amount the bloody bottle says

(Yes I know the rules)

(yes I really do know the rules)

(yes I know you aren’t allowed to take more than 100mls through)

(why did I try then? - because the rule says you can’t take more than 100mls through - not yoh can’t take a bottle marked at 150mls which is clearly half empty through)

(no I didn’t check my baggage)

(because it wasn’t worth the cost for a two night stay and hang luggage was fine)

(yes I know this is a first world problem and some people can’t fly anywhere)

“Some airports may allow you to take liquid in
containers that hold up to 2 litres of liquid”

Why?? Why is this even a thing then. Just make the rule and stick with it

Different types of scanner. If the airport has the more sophisticated ones you can take 2l containers, if not it’s 100mla.

I go through airport security wondering how many people have ever flown because because they are so oblivious and unaware.

DS has been better at airport security than most adults from age 5 or 6. He knows exactly what to do and just gets on and does it quickly. He doesn't faff or misbehave or whine. He understands it's important.

Yes you need to listen to and follow the rules. They bellow them out as you get to security to remind everyone. Yes this applies to everyone. No they are not being mean and singling you out. No they don't want your manky bottle of whatever. Yes you need to remove your coat. No this isn't a drama.

Sometimes things aren't consistent. I don't believe they are inconsistent for no reason. They can feel bonkers and pointless. But I also don't think they'd roll back on introducing rules unless there was a compelling reason though. It's expensive, time consuming and they have to deal with a bunch of knobs kicking off.

Honestly it’s baffling. The rules are on big signs as you walk around to security. Just do as they say!

NotMeAtAll · 24/05/2026 08:48

The liquid rule has been in place since 2006. Was this your first time flying?

Its not only down to the scanners.

Leeds Bradford Airport has the new scanners but still has the 100 ml per container limit in place. You don’t have to take them out of your bag, but the OPs perfume wouldn't have got through.

No but the type of scanner determines whether they CAN have the 2L rule or not.

They then set extra rules as needed

This sums it up perfectly

So the upshot is multiple airports have different rules.

Some allow 2lt through, some don’t allow mini travel bottles unless they are pre-marked (not at home) as 100mls or less.

Some airports change their rules throughout the year

You might leave one airport with one set of rules and travel through another with a different set of rules.

The rules are there to keep us safe, except the rules are all different.

Nobody really knows what the rules are for but we all obey them anyway

So you take one bottle half empty and another bottle of the correct size, full. You have a nice mixing set up. There's some airports that they know terrorists move through, these will be stricter. Some are better funded, so will habe better scanners. To cut down on accusations of racial/sex profiling, you can't take your oil through. It's a nightmare for people who have a stoma etc, you don't know if you will be asked to completely strip, including taking your bag off.

Manchester Airport has fully installed the new 2l scanners. They have briefly implied the 2l rule. Then they reversed them.

As I have already said.

Do not assume that new scanners equals more than 100mls. It does not.

Read the rules for the individual airport instead of repeating bollocks like this.

That’s exactly what I’ve said my good lord

PrincessHoneysuckle · 24/05/2026 10:24

What oil was it? Need a new good one

EasilyPleased · 24/05/2026 10:37

That’s on you, OP. Ask yourself why this is a rule.

fantam · 24/05/2026 10:41

OP, take no notice of the holier than thou lecturing posters. Everyone has messed up at security at least once, then they won't do that again!

With the new scanners, just make sure that even though you can pack liquids up to 2 litres (check with your airport they may have additional rules), you MUST ensure that the return airport also has them. If not, 100ml max in a 100ml container.

Was it Nuxe oil? I got some in France last year on extra special offer in the pharmacie, OMG it is just gorgeous, but I'm sure there are other 18carat gold versions/brands also 😊

imnottoofussed · 24/05/2026 10:47

I also got caught out with the 10 items having to fit in the bag whilst closed. My ten items despite all being under 100ml each wouldn’t fit in their miniature bag (they fit in my ikea one fine) so I had to dispose of one items, so the toothpaste got sacrificed 😂

dementedpixie · 24/05/2026 12:17

You arent limited to 10 items but the bag does need to close. It was a novelty being allowed to take bottles of juice through Edinburgh security and getting to leave everything in your bags was great too after chaos in previous years

Besafeeatcake · 24/05/2026 12:20

Cablestitches · 23/05/2026 17:26

It went through the bloody scanner - that’s why she pulled my bag

Well - if you see someone walking around all dry and scaly it’s me cause my oil got stolen 😡

Ummm no. Your oil didnt get stolen. You attempted to break the rules, got caught and it got confiscated.

There are rules in places because terrorist attempted to blow up planes by mixing liquids.

You can stomp your feet all you want but you were wrong.

Not all of us! Some of us do research

NamelessNancy · 24/05/2026 12:26

Isn't it obvious that they wouldn't judge <100ml by just eyeballing bigger bottles?

Yes, if you want to get on the plane you have to follow the rules, all of which are very easily available online (if your head isn’t so far up your bum you can’t access it).

yoshigizzit · 24/05/2026 12:39

Lol-ing at expensive bottle of oil pocketed by the staff, I very much doubt they kept half a bottle of oil, who would even know oil was expensive?

Monty36 · 24/05/2026 12:43

Cablestitches · 23/05/2026 17:29

But she didn’t throw it into the big box of confiscated liquids did she. She tucked it away on the shelf in front of her

What even happens to all the stuff they confiscated? It gets binned? Bullshit it does

I suspect it does get binned or destroyed. You seem to think she will have it for herself. Given it was half empty even less likely it would be used. She will have no idea what is in it.

Yeah, I can just imagine all the staff heading home with armfuls of other people's half-used toiletries at the end of a shift!

JustMyView13 · 24/05/2026 13:01

To add insult to injury, some airports allow you to store oversized liquids and collect on your return.

tilypu · 25/05/2026 05:38

"OP, take no notice of the holier than thou lecturing posters. Everyone has messed up at security at least once, then they won't do that again!"

I admit, I have messed up at security - there was a bottle in my hand luggage that I had forgotten about. You know what I didn't do? Get "pissed off" (ops words) enough to write about it online. Or even do anything other than apologise to the security person, and then get on with my day once it was resolved.

The issue isn't that op messed up. The issue is that op refuses to acknowledge that and continues to blame the airport.
