Airport security

Clearly the airport is the last place you should be stomping your feet and arguing with staff

but confiscating a really really bloody expensive liquid because the SEE THROUGH BOTTLE says 150ml and it’s clearly half empty - therefore under 100mls purely because the label says 150mls?!

And she didn’t throw it in the bin she put it on the shelf in front of her. Robbed, I was bloody robbed

AIBU - the rule is the liquid amount; not the amount the bloody bottle says

(Yes I know the rules)

(yes I really do know the rules)

(yes I know you aren’t allowed to take more than 100mls through)

(why did I try then? - because the rule says you can’t take more than 100mls through - not yoh can’t take a bottle marked at 150mls which is clearly half empty through)

(no I didn’t check my baggage)

(because it wasn’t worth the cost for a two night stay and hang luggage was fine)

(yes I know this is a first world problem and some people can’t fly anywhere)

This is a screenshot from the Gov.uk website. You don't know the rules. You didn't check them. You're wrong. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Bimblesalong · 23/05/2026 17:22

The rule is the liquid amount and the container it’s in cannot hold more than 100ml. Frustrating though.

Littletreefrog · 23/05/2026 17:22

In an airport that still has the 100ml rule the container cannot exceed 100ml.

Groobey · 23/05/2026 17:24

It’s annoying I know, but unfortunately the rule is the size of the container, not just the amount of liquid.

More and more airports are scrapping it though.

Cablestitches · 23/05/2026 17:25

“Some airports may allow you to take liquid in
containers that hold up to 2 litres of liquid”

Why?? Why is this even a thing then. Just make the rule and stick with it

OP posts:
MrsPinkCock · 23/05/2026 17:25

Yuuuup, they go on container size, not liquid volume.

There are advanced scanners in some airports now though which might give you more?

Cablestitches · 23/05/2026 17:26

It went through the bloody scanner - that’s why she pulled my bag

Well - if you see someone walking around all dry and scaly it’s me cause my oil got stolen 😡

New scanners being rolled out.

dementedpixie · 23/05/2026 17:27

Its always been the container size of 100ml, not the amount of liquid in it. How could they measure how much was left over in a bigger container to see if it was a small enough amount?

Because different airports have different security systems and therefore different rules. No airport with the 100ml liquid rule has ever allowed the individual containers to hold more than 100ml.

Overthebow · 23/05/2026 17:27

You’re wrong, it’s container size. And it wasn’t stolen, you weren’t allowed to take it through security.

That's for things like medicines, baby milk, things for special diets, etc.

JustAnUdea · 23/05/2026 17:28

Next time, decant your luquid.
Thats why you can buy mini bottles!

But she didn’t throw it into the big box of confiscated liquids did she. She tucked it away on the shelf in front of her

What even happens to all the stuff they confiscated? It gets binned? Bullshit it does

Edinburgh allows container 2L in size as they have new scanners. You dont need to take anything out your bags either! The rules will.be different when we travel home from lanzarote though so we will have to pack our bigger containers in hold luggage

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 23/05/2026 17:30

Well I'm guessing you won't do that again with your expensive (Tom Ford?) perfume. You have to check on the individual airport website.

No it’s not. It’s some airports where they have the new scanners

HappyBlueDonkey · 23/05/2026 17:31

You can take 2L bottles of water and all sorts in lots of airports now. However those with the old rules still have always been 100ml max containers

MyAutumnCrow · 23/05/2026 17:31

May I just do a special shout out to security at Gatwick who displayed one hell of sense of humour dealing with me and DP. It was like airport security meets the Chuckle Brothers last time we went through. We actually did all end up laughing. And then DP's trousers fell down.

You really think she took it because she wanted a manky half used bottle of oil? Grim

RedToothBrush · 23/05/2026 17:35

AIBU - the rule is the liquid amount; not the amount the bloody bottle says

It depends on the airport entirely.

I read the rules for Manchester airport this week. It says the following:

You can pack liquids in your hand luggage, as long as each liquid is under 100ml. These can be left in your hand luggage during the Security search. Because of this liquid limit, we recommend packing them in your hold luggage where possible.
Please note: Liquids in containers larger than 100ml cannot go through Security even if the container is only part full. There are some exemptions.

If you wish to bring your own containers to hold 100ml or less, the container must have printed on it the measurement that the container can hold. Travel sets of containers that do not have measurements on them will not be allowed through security. Handwritten measurements or stickers are also not acceptable.

So it is explicit.

I had an argument with a friend about this yesterday who said her son went through security with more recently. I showed her and said nope it's changed again since and yes I had previously been through in the last twelve months and they were allowing more but they'd changed the rules again in April.

So my advice is to check the airport website for the latest as it doesn't seem to be changing regularly.

But as you can see from above and screenshot, Manchester's rules explicitly state it must be in a bottle that holds no more than 100ml AND it needs to have the size printed on it (so you can't self dispense, which is a massive step backwards imho).

You CAN'T do this at Manchester Airport!!!!

Last year I took a full 2 litre bottle through which was allowed through according to their rules. If I hadn't checked the rules again I would have been caught out.

They have the new scanners.

So yeah CHECK WHAT THE AIRPORT RULES SAY ON THE DAY YOU FLY BECAUSE THEY KEEP CHANGING.

RedToothBrush · 23/05/2026 17:47

Oh and yes it WAS the same terminal.

It's bonkers.

I do know last time when I went through with a 2litre bottle (which was obvious and in a side pocket so they can't have missed it) they were having a huge number of bag rejections.

Yetone · 23/05/2026 17:47

You might get new scanners on the way out only to find that coming home the airport at your holiday destination doesn’t.

Security have no idea what might be in a half used bottle so I can't see them looking to taking it home.
