Coming off MJ for holidays ..’!

Youthinkyourefunny · Yesterday 17:09

I’ve seen a number of threads on here about coming off MJ for holidays .. full disclosure, I went on two extended holidays while in loss mode .. Can’t get my head around this mindset.

Why would anyone do this if they are serious about being healthy. (Which surely why most of us have done/doing this)

It’s not like it’s hard .. you eat absolutely everything you want.. just small amounts of everything you fancy until your brain/gut says ‘enough’ .. then you actually don’t want anymore.. why would you stop and then gorge yourself ? I was in SE Asia where the food was lush .. had some of everything. Never felt deprived.

YABU - Your MJ journey is different. I still miss food.

YANBU - just stick with it. It works . I’m

Interesting.

We go away in a few weeks and I've not decided what to do yet.

Twasasurprise · Yesterday 17:14

I'm the same as you. Although, as I can eat anything in tiny portions, I wouldn't feel like I was missing out. I can also still drink alcohol.

If rich or spicy foods or alcohol were intolerable for me on MJ, I can understand why people would skip a dose or two to enjoy a holiday more. I'm not sure that a short break from MJ would enable many people to gorge themselves.

Merryoldgoat · Yesterday 17:14

Are you so hard of thinking not to understand everyone’s experience is different?

I’ve been on MJ for nearly 2 years and only lost 4 stone compared with my very close friend who lost 11 in less than a year.

I had zero side effects so was fine for holiday. Another could barely eat due to nausea so came off for holiday so she could enjoy food.

I still think about food and have a large appetite despite being on a high dose. My sister says she has to set an alarm to remind her to eat.

Why do you care?

Dublassie · Yesterday 17:17

On it almost two years and always come off it for holidays . Have had no issues with weight regain or side effects when starting again . Longest I was ever off it was 2 and a half weeks but I would miss a jab regularly if having a weekend away etc .
Food is there to be enjoyed !

wendywoopywoo222 · Yesterday 17:20

I think you mean it’s not hard for you. Some people can’t eat certain things on Montjaro without being ill.

And it’s nice to have a break and eat normally.

I put on ten pounds on my all inclusive holiday, am losing it again but would do the same again.
it’s not a sprint to the finish for me, it’s now a way of life and enjoying my food more on holiday as I always have done and alcohol is part of it.

MeridaBrave · Yesterday 17:21

I didn’t want to travel with it mostly as I was concerned about my DC (teens) seeing it in the fridge of the house. I took one dose a couple of days early and I missed a dose. Also I use pens for more than 30 days so wasn’t keen to travel with it.

I didn’t gain weight as I was careful with my eating. it was maybe a little harder. Each to their own. Why are you judging. I’m still taking in maintenance and I def won’t be taking this year. I have no intention of bingeing etc.

Well the people who come off it because they want to stuff themselves are surely the people who are not going to maintain their weight after they have finished the course.

Ablondiebutagoody · Yesterday 17:38

If I've enjoyed eating like a glutton my whole life, 2 weeks of it won't hurt. I also take up smoking when I'm on holiday as a little treat. Mainly in Spain, there's something about that heat as I leave the airport that makes me want a fag.

Merryoldgoat · Yesterday 17:59

@Youthinkyourefunny well your post is full of judgement so it doesn’t sound like your ‘interested’ - you sound self-righteous.

Linenspots · Yesterday 18:04

I take Ozempic (for diabetes). When I am due to go on holiday, I stop taking it for the week beforehand and for the time I am away. I'm on a very small dose and weight loss has been negligible in the two years I've been taking it.

So why do I stop before a holiday? Although appetite suppression for me is minimal, it has almost entirely removed any enjoyment I get from eating! I eat because I need to and because I feel hungry as usual, and at the appropriate times. However, whatever I'm eating is just a means to an end, and I rarely feel just the sheer pleasure of eating something delicious anymore.

It's done wonders for stabilising my erratic glucose levels and spikes though, so I'll keep taking it, but won't begrudge myself a week off to really enjoy my holiday food!

Whatalunatic · Yesterday 18:13

Depends on the length of holiday. I went away for a week on the Saturday, due a dose on the Sunday but decided I didn't want questions at the airport. Can't say I felt any difference until Thursday so in the big scheme of things, it wasn't an issue I am due to go away for 4 weeks this summer and will be taking it with me because it also supports my blood sugar and could be problematic to be without it for so long. I get why people might just want to relax whilst away. Nothing it's a big deal.

Squirrelchops1 · Yesterday 18:16

I'm with you OP. If you have a mindset of coming off it so you can stuff your face on holiday then you may as well just not bother as what will happen when you stop the injections altogether.
Every holiday I've had the last 18months I've stayed on it and still enjoyed food just smaller portions. I've also lost weight too due to all the walking and swimming.

For many, stopping the injections isn't an option. I know I will struggle to maintain. I hope I am able to afford it for life. Shrugs.

I think it speaks to how WLI can help people lose weight but not change ingrained patterns of disordered eating - the feast and famine mentality, dieting for a holiday and gaining weight while there.

Me personally, I’ve never gained a significant amount of weight on holiday. I eat how I eat at home. There are no treat days or oh I couldn’t possibly have cake because going to Menorca next month. That’s probably why I’m overweight, but only a tiny bit and am not on WLI though.

I have been on holiday since being on cancer treatment and having no appetite. I would love to want to eat an ice cream. I don’t really want it. But sometimes I have the ice cream, even though it tastes of nothing and sometimes I don’t. It’s still a lovely holiday though because the enjoyment of my holidays is not based on drinking and eating til I’m stuffed.

Youthinkyourefunny · Yesterday 18:36

I’m honestly not judging ANYONE !! Just trying to understand the mind set .
For full disclosure, I was 19st 10 when I started in April 2024… This drug has changed my life !
Instead of being a big fat sweaty self loathing pile of blubber .. I am now a size 8 mega active normal human who goes horse riding (pity the poor horse before) and paddle boarding.. (it would normally of just sank ) .. I can enjoy going to the park with my GC.. whereas before it was an extraordinary effort . Now I exhaust them . So I am genuinely interested why anyone would put that life ‘on hold’ ..

So I have had weight loss surgery lost 5 stone stalled for 2 years and lost a further 5 stone with mounjaro eating the same way it’s a hormone issue with me. But when I fly my restriction gets super high and I struggle to eat anyway so I will be comming off my for Holliday

wendywoopywoo222 · Yesterday 18:48

I don’t stuff myself on holiday despite putting on weight. I just eat portions of things that I wouldn’t have at home. Mainly deserts and I enjoy a few cocktails. It’s easy to eat more calorific food without stuffing yourself.

I intend on staying in it for life.

AllFadestoBlack · Yesterday 18:51

The people I know that have stopped it for a holiday did so because it makes them feel ill. They likened it to the first trimester of pregnancy and they didn't want to feel nauseous on holiday so stopped it. One went on to quit altogether as she couldn't cope with how ill it made her feel.

This isn't a bashing post, I know others who had/have much milder symptoms and have done amazingly well.

GreyMayDays · Yesterday 18:52

This is just word of mouth - sibling of a work colleague of my husband works in a hospital (nurse). She’s apparently told her sibling that half the ward she works on is now people seriously ill with mounjaro related issues. The biggest issue (anecdotally) is people being on a high dose, stopping to go away and then going straight back onto the high dose they were on before the holiday rather than building up again.

No idea of the accuracy of the third hand info but I’d definitely urge caution. If you stop, build back up slowly.

I can’t take mounjaro because of a medication that I’m on - I would take it if I could as I would love to be slim again.

If you miss for a weekend do you just take it on the day you are back?

No side effects after two weeks off and restarting at the same dose?

I'm on Wegovy. We go away for 11 nts. Was thinking about taking it the night before we fly and then as soon as I get back. Only have a bit of heartburn on day 1 and 2 of taking a jab but nothing major.

Youthinkyourefunny · Yesterday 19:14

Thank you everyone who has responded e en those angry at me for asking the question..
I have been extremely lucky and now appreciate that even more since your replies.. as have never had any form of side effect and in real life .. have maybe 15-20 friends on it with only one suffering nausea.. I think now if it gave me non stop nausea, then I would also stop for a holiday !

Sometimes I take it the day after a weekend away but sometimes I just push it out until the next week.
I find after almost 2 years I am very settled on Mounjaro and my weight seems to stay steady at just under 9 stone . I was almost 13 stone .
If I miss say 2 weeks I just restart at my regular dose . I am on 5mg but I use bigger pens and take smaller doses from them .

Dublassie · Yesterday 19:21

I should say the reason I don't take it is that I want to eat and drink more when away . And I don't want to risk nausea or similar which might happen if I over indulge while on the drug properly.
And I don't want to be full after a starter either . Eating when away is a social activity and I want to enjoy all the courses and follow up with my cheese and wine etc. !
