What disincentives could discourage people from buying second homes?

What disincentives would work to stop people buying second homes?

Inspired by a different thread. It seems a number of people share my abhorrent of second homes.

I have seen the place I grew up turned into a ghost village by selfish idiots buying second homes. Now there is no local shop, no local school, no doctors surgery, no pub, no busses nothing. There were not enough people using them consistently for them to make money.

So what would make people stop killing local communities. Financial penalties I guess but how high? Wales has introduced a 100% local tax increase on second homes but it doesn't seem to be enough.

To you. It’s applicable to you. Personally, I’d view it in a totally different way and I haven’t been “ given” anything.

Same. Started in poverty. Worked f**g hard to drag myself out of, not just poverty but the whole environment I was raised in. And now I’m not allowed to enjoy my hard-earned money because someone else didn’t.
Where is the incentive for ANYONE to better themselves?!

You’re not better, you’re just richer.

You are assuming that I had a privileged upbringing. I didn't. What I was 'given' was brains, motivation, an opportunity. Most people have this. I took it. It seems so did you.

I am not talking about 100% income tax. I am talking about preventing massive societal harm by a selfish minority.

My motivation for working hard was never to screw other people over. I believe that I can have a very comfortable life, much more so than I grew up with. Without harming others.

I agree with this. I am not better than my childhood friends who are impacted by the destruction of our community.

I'm interested in this thread as I'm likely to inherit a second home that will be a really tough house to sell. The house next door took three years to sell, as they're all very remote.

My parents are trying to do work to make it more saleable before passing it on to us, but they can't work miracles.

It's "quirks", substantial charm and very remote location are exactly the things that make it desirable as a second home but not as a main residence.

We're hoping to retain and enjoy it for a few years whilst exploring uses such as outdoor ed/hiking retreat etc.

A few people would love it, but even when next door slashed their price, it still took over a year to sell.

It's hard to think of falling foul of the rules in this thread.

Semantics. I am doing better than some of the people I grew up with, because I was lucky to have a useful brain and I applied myself. There are friends of mine who just accepted their lot and are living the same lives as their parents.

Be careful with these semantics. Our economy would collapse is everyone did the latter.
