How needy is your dishwasher?

Mine seems to demand salt and rinse aid weekly?
I also have to regularly (like more than once a week) clean the arms and the filter.
It still regularly punishes me by not properly cleaning things but ‘burning’ on the mess so it then needs scrubbing. Or by not draining properly so I have to dig around in the water to get the filter etc.
we do scrape the plates etc before putting them in but dont rinse them. Is this where we’re going wrong?

Ours is pretty low maintenance although maybe three times a year it likes to decide the little cover thing that covers the spinny bit in the filter will pop off stopping it draining. This means I have to manually get all the stinky greasy water out the put the fiddly cover back in place.

Mine is a Bosch. I use the all in one tabs, always bought discounted, and it doesn’t ask for salt or rinse aid. I clean the filter at the bottom every week or so ,and scrape plates with a rubber spatula. I use the long wash cycle as it’s supposed to better for the machine, and it uses less electricity.

Love my dishwasher and I tell it so regularly.

Same. And thank him

hes called Dave. Dave the dishwasher

Usually in a well at the bottom which you unscrew but if your water isn't too hard and you use 3 in 1 tablets you probably won't need it. Mine needs salt because our water hardness is about 300ppm, under about 150-200ppm I probably wouldn't bother because the tablets will cope with it.

Not needy at all - mid range Bosch. We have a water softener so don’t need to use salt and I’d sort of forgotten rinse aid exists. I do clean the filters and run a cleaning cycle regularly though. We don’t rinse anything before it goes in.

@Dbank I think if there’s grease and gunk of the plates it’s really best to get that off as it can clog the filters very easily. Miele says do this but you don’t need to pre wash. We simply don’t have clogged filters by ensuring the dishwasher doesn’t have a hard time.

Yes remove anything solid, but not need to wipe or rinse. Any grease will be dissolved by the heat and detergent.

See your manual for confirmation .

I have had a dishwasher since the 80’s, so long long user. I never put salt or rinse aid in, lol. Just bung the plates in, put a tablet in and hit the on button. I have to occasionally leave something in for a second cycle but it’s not often. I do clean the filter out which is a gungy job but if I do it regularly it’s not too bad. Google says my area is soft to slightly hard water, whatever that means!

edit: not the same dishwasher since the 80’s, I might add!

Fuckmyliferightnow · 23/05/2026 14:15

I spray Fairy soak spray in mine, it’s a great degreaser.

He's pretty needy, I have to talk to him, give cuddles and words of encouragement.

(The dishwasher is my husband)

Oh, I had a defective model like that. The dishes never came out properly clean.

I kept him for decorative purposes and got a Bosch to do the job properly.

How do you unclog the pipes? My dishwasher has suddenly stopped working as it wont fill with water. Google says it could be a pipe issue. It’s integrated so I don’t even know where the plug is. It’s only about 4 years old.

OP was saying she has a problem with her drain pipes. If yours is not filling it will be a different issue. I wonder if you have an aquastop pipe to fill it where the leak-detector thing has got triggered accidentally, they are a pain. Look at where it's connected, probably under the sink, and see if it has a little window like this which has turned red.

Sick of mine as much as I love it. No blockages, filters cleaned, rinsed and sacred up but have to now wipe off some items coming out.

Thank you. I will check that.

Darkladyofthesonnets · 23/05/2026 16:59

Where do you put the salt? I have never even heard of such a thing and I've had decades of dishwasher use. A bottle of rinseaid lasts us for ages too. Not in the UK though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/05/2026 17:11

Salt hole is usually at the bottom of the dishwasher

Hankunamatata · 23/05/2026 18:39

Salt is once in a blue moon.

Gave up on rinse aid

I run hot empty wash once a week

BertieBotts · 23/05/2026 20:00

If you're not in Europe Darklady your machines might not take salt. I watched an interesting (OK...Grin) youtube video about dishwashers and the presenter was American and he mentioned that in North America they don't have salt but in Europe it is common.

IjustbelieveinMe · 24/05/2026 02:58

No salt dishwasher where I am in Australia just sayin..

What brand is it. I had an expensive Bosch that needed the arms cleaned weekly or it would leave dried on stains on things that didn’t have them before they went in. Never had to do that with my previous much cheaper dishwashers I was almost relieved when it died at only 4 years old. Was recommended Becko by 2 different engineers and it’s much better a lot less needy

I have a beko, it’s really needy
or maybe I’m just a shit dishwasher mum
