AIBU to be surprised by friends wanting a curry after supper?

Light hearted post - am just curious to know what other people think … So my DP and I went to friends for supper on Saturday evening. We ate at around 7 pm. It was a substantial meal. Afterwards they suggested we popped out for a cpl of drinks - all good. We had a nice evening. At around 10 30 - they suggested we go for a late night curry - we’d only eaten a huge meal three hours before . We rather reluctantly went there - but we just had samosas. They ordered the full works . AIBU to marvel at their appetite and capacity for food? I just cannot keep up and don’t really want to . They’re not overweight btw. They just seemed to think this was normal

I grew up having supper.

It was eaten around 6pm and consisted of food such as scrambled eggs on toast (bear in mind I was a young kid).

A supper for adults was something like fish cooked simply with salad.

Obviously with friends, this would be a nicer meal with more effort.

Missing the point, but where was this? I haven’t seen a proper old open til the early hours curry house in years!

andthat · 19/05/2026 01:49

I could absolutely do this. I’ve got a massive appetite and always have… and if I’m tired, I eat even more. What I eat is fairly healthy and I’ve always exercised so a healthy weight…but need to be careful not to over eat!

ClayPotaLot · 19/05/2026 02:52

There was definitely a time I could have done that, but not anymore. There was something about having a couple of pints that opens up the curry/kebab/Chinese stomach and made room!

If they only do it after a few drinks, aren’t drinking every night, and eat less during the week(or the next day), it’s not particularly surprising they aren’t overweight. Over eating isn’t generally about one offs.

My kinda people 😁

SmellycatSmelllycat · 19/05/2026 03:08

I had a friend who used to refer to her evening meal as supps 😡.

Not sure this needed the AIBU tag / vote - it's never unreasonable to be curious and ask questions, in my opinion! I used to eat like this. Back when food was affordable! Normal reaction I think. Plus, I got healthy and eat much less now. You don't have to be overweight to be unhealthy.

peppaispoop · 19/05/2026 03:33

Yabu to use the word supper 😬

Hengzhi · 19/05/2026 03:41

Being in a good mood can really whet one’s appetite.
I suppose they were just so happy that they ate a bit more than usual.
Eating a little too much now and then won’t affect your weight; as long as you don’t overeat on a regular basis, you won’t put on weight.

ACR7 · 19/05/2026 05:42

I think it’s just the booze. I wouldn’t eat again at home other than maybe a couple of biscuits with a cup of tea if I ate at 7 but I’ve seen me and husband go out for a meal and then for drinks and bring a takeaway in. It’s usually just a a rare night out thing.

Sartre · 19/05/2026 05:47

DH went out with colleagues last week and one of them ate a massive lunch and said that was him filled FOR THE DAY. I can’t imagine eating one meal a day, I would quite honestly keel over and just be an absolute monster. I have to eat regular meals otherwise my head bangs and I get aggressive. Everyone’s different I guess!

Eating more after getting pissed is fairly usual, alcohol lowers inhibitions and makes a lot of people crave junk.

Do you live rurally or something? They’re all over big cities.

babyproblems · 19/05/2026 06:06

It sounds to me like you had a small dinner at a friends, and then later you all had an Indian supper 😁

I find appetite mismatches like this really tricky socially. I have a fairly small appetite and simply can't overeat without being uncomfortable - unfortunately now in my mid 30s my metabolism has slowed down a bit more, this means I'm full after one big course and often can't manage pudding etc. I've always been slim but did manage to eat a fair bit in my 20s and especially when I was breastfeeding. I love food and love having a taste of everything but just can't manage the quantities any more that others seem to.
I've read enough threads on Mumsnet over the years about so-called "competitive undereating" to know that lots of people hate anyone making comments to the effect of "thanks but I couldn't manage that" so I genuinely find it very difficult to know how to handle social situations like the one you describe. We have friends who serve absolutely enormous portions when they host and I have often lied and said I had a really late lunch so that they don't think I'm trying to be "competitive" about my smaller appetite or something. The truth is I just couldn't manage it!

I am the same as you and I just say "no more for me, thanks". Thats it. It doesnt require any more explaining.I really dont think it's necessary to go on about what you can manage or how small your appetite is. I think this is what others find irritating.

It's like drinking alcohol- if someone had a glass of wine and then said no more for me thanks, you wouldnt demand to know why and try to push a vodka on them.

Now, if you are around people who would do that and get all pushy about it then thats an entirely different scenario because thats rude to not respect people's "no" and in those cases I find the broken record technique works. You just say "ah no, no more for me thanks" over and over and over and over again no matter what they say. It's a bit tedious but once they figure out you arent budging they usually let it go and get tired of asking.

The problem with saying you cant manage any more is that people then start on about "but its only small", "just have a little bit then" etc whereas saying no thanks doesnt give them any room for argument.

I think I’m more active then they are 🤔

Arh, well then they're greedy pigs.

This is the answer you were looking for? 🤔

houseofvelvet · 19/05/2026 06:40

Also, for the people saying their friends can eat loads and not put on weight - do they fidget a lot?

This falls under whats called called NEAT: Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. Its those people who cant sit still and are always moving about, getting up, sitting down, swinging their legs, gesturing wildly with their arms, bouncing their knees etc

Research has shown that those people can burn hundreds of calories more than very still people, even up to 800 calories a day which is a huge amount when you think about it!

Superhansrantowindsor · 19/05/2026 06:50

If you call your evening meal supper, what do you call the late piece of toast you have late in the evening that a lot of people call supper?

Doggymummar · 19/05/2026 06:55

DrCoconut · 19/05/2026 00:25

To me supper is cereal or toast eaten just before bed. It was always a big thing growing up that you needed your supper to sleep well and not be hungry overnight.

Bowl of frosties and a glass of Nequick in our house

PartyQuestion30th · 19/05/2026 07:04

I’m my 20s, yes I’d have done this, as I’d have been exercising regularly and lots, probably skipped either breakfast or lunch…and had an amazing metabolism. I was a size 8/10. Now, late 50s, I’m in bed by 10, and the thought of a late night curry has me reaching for the Rennes.

likelysuspect · 19/05/2026 07:10

Yes when younger I would have done this. Couldnt do it now. Peoples appetites change as they get older.

DeposedPresident · 19/05/2026 07:15

I think it depends on a number of things:

  1. What was the 7 pm meal - dips and cruidtes or a Beef Wellington?
  2. How much you all drank
  3. Can't remember - distracted by thoughts of Beef Wellington
Gettingbysomehow · 19/05/2026 07:19

My stomach would explode if I ate a big meal then a curry. Id be having reflux all night. I dont eat much now Im older tbh.
When you said you made them a substantial meal was it substantial or the mumsnet chicken saga 😂

It's interesting how people are different, as you say.

DH needs to eat dinner. He really only eats salad and soup with bread though. He's very very thin. He can graze all day and then eats dinner.

I am fat (13 stone and 5 feet 2) but if I eat a reasonable sized lunch then I can't eat again for the day. Yesterday I was starving and ate avocado on toast with sliced tomatos and had some baba ghanoush with veg sticks around 2 pm. I couldn't eat again for the rest of the day- and it wasn't even THAT filling a lunch. Mind you, I ate breakfast about 2 hours ago as I woke up starving.

LaurieFairyCake · 19/05/2026 07:21

Ah I remember a night like that with fondness. A big pizza to pre-advance soak up the alcohol before going out, 5 hours dancing at the disco and a sit down Chinese meal at 2am.

I would LOVE a night like that again.

UniBrowsAreHot · 18/05/2026 21:13

Yes, we all know here at MN we don't eat. We merely breathe the nutrients from others to maintain our size 4 visage.

@UniBrowsAreHot

yeah, cos if you don’t nosh on a curry and all the accoutrements as a late night snack you are clearly a competitive under eater….
