AIBU to be surprised by friends wanting a curry after supper?

Light hearted post - am just curious to know what other people think … So my DP and I went to friends for supper on Saturday evening. We ate at around 7 pm. It was a substantial meal. Afterwards they suggested we popped out for a cpl of drinks - all good. We had a nice evening. At around 10 30 - they suggested we go for a late night curry - we’d only eaten a huge meal three hours before . We rather reluctantly went there - but we just had samosas. They ordered the full works . AIBU to marvel at their appetite and capacity for food? I just cannot keep up and don’t really want to . They’re not overweight btw. They just seemed to think this was normal

Curious to know @bagpuss90 , what was the ‘substantial’ 7pm meal?

Hallywally · 18/05/2026 21:43

Some people like a late night take away after drinking- it’s very common. If they’re generally healthy it’s not a big deal. People are allowed treats.

BurnoutBee · 18/05/2026 21:49

What is supper? Is that an evening snack?

mindutopia · 18/05/2026 21:52

Back in the days of going out and partying, yes. That’s why curry houses are so busy at that time of night.

Now in my 40s when I don’t drink? No. It’s a stretch to eat a curry for my actual dinner and not feel unwell after.

CoastalCalm · 18/05/2026 21:59

Interested to know what you all had at 7

Cluelessfirstimer · 18/05/2026 22:00

I think its pretty normal after a few drinks for people to get hungry. Curry is usually a late night choice after a few.

I know I definitely craved something salty after a few drinks in the pub.

In my 20s I was tiny. A little underweight according to BMI but I ate like an absolute savage. It wasnt unheard of for me to go out for dinner, then hit the pubs and clubs and grab an XL pizza and chips on the way home. I just seemed to burn it off so easily and I was ALWAYS hungry! People would always comment about it.

Sadly once 30 hit that all ended 😅 the pounds found me! And I definitely cannot eat like that anymore.

Pistachiocake · 18/05/2026 22:03

Most of us are raised to think slim people eat less than bigger people, so while we really should know some people eat tons and are slim, and some eat hardly anything and are bigger, it surprises us to see it,
I wouldn't want to eat that late, but when you drink, you sometimes crave food.

But saying this i do have a friend whos 38 and still eats like this. I stayed with her for a few nights about a year ago and could not keep up. Huge breakfast, brunch, lunch, something in-between lunch and dinner, dinner then a huge cheese selection around 10pm.

Shes not over weight nor does a huge amount of exercise. Guess we are all different at every age.

MyArtfulGreySloth · 18/05/2026 22:16

Always thought “supper” was a light meal or snack eaten after dinner/tea.

pontipinemum · 18/05/2026 22:33

I guess it depends on what substantial was. When I used to drink I was always really hungry at the end of the night and usually got chips

Now I don't drink and do so much talking and dancing I'm still hungry at the end of the night and get chips!

hahabahbag · 18/05/2026 22:35

@SliceofTosstdifferent on cruises, it’s rule isn’t it to hit the late night buffet Grin (Actually we always skip breakfast so still only 3 meals a day)

MulberryFresser · 18/05/2026 22:36

I can’t eat that late - get terrible heartburn. Would have had a samosa/a mango lassi and gone to bed.

shrunkenhead · 18/05/2026 22:42

I couldn't manage it but after a few drinks people get peckish.... I'm guessing they didn't eat the whole thing in one go and will have the other half for another meal the next day/hangover breakfast etc.

swingingbytheseat · 18/05/2026 23:21

are you in your 20’s /30’s ?
I used to be able to eat like this 😅

TheChosenTwo · 18/05/2026 21:38

What actually IS supper though?
I’ve only ever heard of it used to describe a light meal eaten a couple of hours after a dinner, so something like cheese and bread which clearly isn’t a full meal.
If I had what I would think of as ‘supper’ at 7 it wouldn’t be surprising to want to eat again after drinking.

I think people vary in the terms they use. It isn't necessarily a class thing.

We have always referred to our main evening meal as supper, which is eaten quite late, whereas tea would be a small meal in the late afternoon.

On the other hand my parents call their main evening meal their tea, eaten around 5pm, and anything eaten after that would be snack size and called supper.

ImFinePMSL · 18/05/2026 23:37

YABU for calling your evening meal “supper”. It’s dinner or tea.

Delphiniumandlupins · 18/05/2026 23:39

I think a kebab is more traditional post-drinking food. Although, when I was much younger I do remember an occasional late-night curry.

Mumandcarer80 · 18/05/2026 23:52

You don’t know what they had to eat earlier in the day. Alcohol makes me hungry plus it isn’t that warm for this time of year. You burn more calories when you feel colder.

Sensiblesal · 18/05/2026 23:54

I don’t think its normal to judge your ‘friends’ like this.

its not fat shaming but food shaming cos you couldn’t eat that much.

Maybe they just wanted to soak up the alcohol. I doubt they eat like this all the time

teamaven · 18/05/2026 23:55

What was the substantial meal? Why has no one asked this? It’s imperative information to answer the question 😂

StripyShirt · 19/05/2026 00:01

Supper is a small snack before bed, unless you are David Cameron.

JohnBullshit · 19/05/2026 00:06

It's a young person's game, the post-pub scoffing. I used to be able to do it when I was in my twenties and seven stone fuck-all. Now I'm old and look as if I mainline jalfrezi and peshwari naan every night after having pie and chips for tea, and I really really couldn't.

Anonanonay · 19/05/2026 00:17

'No thanks, I'm still full from the meal we had earlier, but you go right ahead. I'll just have a drink.'

To me supper is cereal or toast eaten just before bed. It was always a big thing growing up that you needed your supper to sleep well and not be hungry overnight.

maudelovesharold · 19/05/2026 00:29

I’ve just realised we use ‘dinner’. ‘tea’, and ‘supper’ pretty much interchangeably for our main meal in the evening (about 7). Midday meal is always ‘lunch’!
I do remember the delights of cheese on toast at 2 in the morning, after a night out!
