It was coming. You dont get good reality TV without people suffering.

This news however is awful. Bloody awful.

A groom dressed in a dark suit and a bride dressed in white walk hand in hand along a sunlit grassy path, surrounded by tall green trees. Bright sunlight filters through the leaves. A large green Channel 4 logo sits to the left.

Married at First Sight UK 'brides' say they were raped by onscreen husbands

Channel 4 was aware of one of the rape claims before broadcast, but the woman involved still featured in the show.

I saw this thread hovering in the trending list and ignored it. I thought ‘Oh well, the death of another reality TV show’ and ignored it. But then I read the news this morning (lead story on BBC News app) and realised it was a bit more than just another show running out of steam. Most shocking is the OP’s attempts to back pedal. Almost every time she says how awful it is, she then starts bemoaning the demise of the show. Is that how hardened some people are to exploitation and sexual assault? Oh yeah, yeah I know it’s awful, BUT …

Unbelievable. Or maybe not.

jessycake · 19/05/2026 08:09

Good I hate these low quality exploitative type of programmes , I used to hate channel 5s rage bait benefits programmes too, thankfully they have given up with those . You sign up to something with no editorial control and what they portray doesn’t always paint the true picture and it might be available forever to watch.

ben Elton wrote a brilliant book called dead famous about reality TV manipulation- ahead of its time

Edited

SC fi TV writer Nigel Kneale wrote a play in the late 60s called the Year of the Sex Olympics that essentially foresaw love island and the drive for ever more extreme content for viewing

I really hope reality tv is finished. We’ve had it for 25 odd years and it needs to be finally binned. I’m surprised people still watch knowing how far removed it is from the very early days.

I agree.

I watched the first few series of Big Brother and decided it had stopped being an interesting bit of social observation and was becoming a voyeuristic shitshow and have watched precious little of it since. (I quite like "Traitors", which has a very different vibe about it, imo.)

I like to think that the airtime will be taken up with decent dramas and documentaries, but I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah true

Will have to find something else to occupy my time now that reality tv is all but over 😭

Your post is sociopathic.

I’ve always wondered about Naked Attraction and how the contestants are kept safe. These type of programs make me feel so old. I just don’t understand. Whilst flicking through the channels one evening Love Island was on. All the male contestants were blindfolded and the women were snogging them one by one and rating each other out of ten. Is this entertainment? Is this ‘Love’? It really has to stop. There are so many amazing documentaries out there to watch instead. We live in an age where education is so easily accessible and yet people choose to watch this shit instead?

Tv pandering to the lowest common denominator.

So depressing that these shows are so popular

Yeah love island I could never take to. But the degree to how it's cut through with school age kids is really grim. It's all the ultra skinny / buff stuff as well

TheoriginalMrsDarcy · 19/05/2026 08:33

Finally, this low brow reality TV is going to be scrapped. You can take love island with u as well. Television has sunk to an all time low with this drival.

Ginmonkeyagain · 19/05/2026 08:34

I have always hated these types of programmes, they exploit vulnerable people and attract the sort of men who should be on some sort of list.

In the future we will regard this sort of stuff with the same horror and shame as we do Victorian freakshows or the custom of charging people to gawp at patients in mental health institutions.

Candlebook · 19/05/2026 08:36

TipsyLaird · 18/05/2026 18:08

This programme has changed totally from when it was first made. I remember watching the first couple of series probably 10-15 years ago and it was quite gentle, quite documentary style, lots about matching people up and the way they made their choices of pairings.

Then it seemed to morph into something a lot different, aimed at shocking, not interested in finding matches but finding conflict, stirring it up.

Exactly this. I remember watching the original couple of series and they were really good. It was a completely different format to the current set up. It used to be just two couples who were followed for the whole series. More of a documentary style and much more in-depth in terms of how the experiment was working. The format then totally changed to include more couples, drunken dinner parties, rage baiting, group activities- all set up to make drama and blazing rows (e.g. your standard Big Brother/Love Island/Jeremy Kyle spectacle).

NotMeAtAll · 19/05/2026 08:37

I hope the production company goes bankrupt - I mean financially as they're already morally bankrupt. "Reality" TV isn't reality. At least I can't imagine anyone carrying on like this in real life. It's a sad indictment of the modern world that people are willing to demean themselves like this to become Z listers, and that's even before the rapes and sexual abuse are taken into account. It's the exploitation of vulnerable people. None of this surprises me in the least. It's sickening.

Speaks volumes about those who watch them and have done in the past -Jeremy Kyle et al.
As soon as someone says to me they life reality t.v I think I.Q.. um.. about 56 then and disengage as they are probably a brain dead to find such stuff 'entertaining'.
Such a low bar.

BIossomtoes · 19/05/2026 08:45

I’ve just watched the Panorama programme. The most shocking aspect for me was the way “welfare” dismissed and minimised the women’s experience when they were told about it. I hope the production company is sued to extinction.

Hopefully they will be and this era of trash TV exploiting the vulnerable and enabling bullies, narcissists and abusers will end.

No idea how that is seen as entertaining with the abuse, rapes and sometimes suicides of the participants with viewers contributing to that by encouraging ever more vulgar, exploitative TV.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 18/05/2026 18:01

Fair enough, apologies for anyone offended - mens actions dont shock me but this is truly awful.

OP Would you.prefer women to continue to be sexually abused, just so you get entertainment??

SignGrudgeBluebook · 19/05/2026 08:53

Piggywaspushed · 18/05/2026 18:11

Yes, I agree - the original series were horses of a different colour. It changed when it went global and presumably to a different production company.

Outside of these revelations there has been an awful lot of gaslighting, bullying and borderline coercive control .

At the same time, I am not sure about BBC gleefully presenting it as their top story and promoting Panorama tonight. Proper investigative journalism is great but they are sensationalising it themselves.

I agree with this. The reality of this situation, unless the content of Panorama is wrong, is that these cases would be thrown out before they even get to a hearing. The grooms in question would be well advised to lawyer up and start suing for defamation. The time to act was at the time and if and when there was evidence. Panorama overhyped a situation that, arguably, should not even be in the public domain.

Myblueclematis · 19/05/2026 09:01

I find things like Naked Attraction and MAFS and other programmes along similar lines really sleazy.

I would be glad to see less of these programmes where everyone is after their 15 minutes of "celebrity fame".

More quality drama and programmes about the real world not the Z-list shite that fills the TV schedules because it's cheap to make and pushes the boundaries of what many people find acceptable as entertainment..

Fetchthevet · 19/05/2026 09:04

Why was Love Island allowed to keep being made after the suicides of contestants? Never understood that.

Neither of you have watched the programme, have you? The “grooms in question” who are alleged to have committed rape and sexual assault weren’t named and nor were their accusers - how can anyone sue for defamation when they’re not identified?

Panorama has served a very useful function - it’s extremely doubtful that MAFSUK will ever see the light of day again.

Monty36 · 19/05/2026 09:08

Same.

I've not watched any reality TV. I saw the first series of IACGMOOH, which I only saw because my exh liked Ant and Dec! But nothing before or since.

Some humans have always enjoyed exploiting other humans and being excited in one way or another by the degradation of people they see as beneath them.

Along with culturally accepted attitudes of men as a class towards women as a class, I can't believe anyone is surprised to hear this tbh.

One of the grooms accused of sexual assault was named. As for the others, we all know how this goes in the modern world. There doesn't need to be direct accusations at first for it all to be revealed.

I enjoy the program and hope it doesn't die a death as a result. I do think the SAS reality TV show should be stopped. It's only a matter of time before someone dies or gets a life changing injury with the production company using the excuse that it's the nature of the challenge that.....blardy blar
