AIBU to ask people not to poop in new under stairs cloakroom?

keepswimming38 · 17/05/2026 20:46

We are just having a new cloakroom installed downstairs. AIBU to put a sign up saying ‘no poo loo’ or ‘if you plan to do a poo do it in the upstairs loo’?

My DH thinks it’s not reasonable. I just down like the idea of people doing a poop in there and then the macerator having to … anyway AIBU?

Actually, just put up a warning stating that guests will be eaten by the macerator if they have the temerity to poo.😎

Like the poop!

You’re being ridiculous.

You’ll look back on this thread in a few years and cringe with embarrassment.

And only kids say “poop”. Grow up.

Juliadiesalone · 17/05/2026 23:40

I try and squeeze out a poo even if o didn’t need one upon reading that

ps why does sepsis cause mobility issues that mean she can’t get upstairs for a wee but can for a poo

CoffeeAndCats3 · 17/05/2026 23:40

I've never heard of a macerator toilet.
You really do learn something new everyday.

Fizbosshoes · 17/05/2026 23:41

Im surprised the number of people who havent heard a downstairs toilet called a cloakroom

TheDenimPoet · 17/05/2026 23:47

I'd hate going to a house with this kind of rule, because I'd know that if I went upstairs, everyone would know I was having a poo!

CurdinHenry · 17/05/2026 21:15

Wtf do you live in a country with no proper sewage??

Yep - it’s called Mumsnetland, where the natives are very weird about toilets, and believe that “workmen” shit nuclear waste.

Calling it a “cloakroom” implies a certain awkwardness as well.

Oh we know that people call it that, but its twee and ridiculous.

scalt · 17/05/2026 23:51

I thought “poop” was the back of a ship, or what Mr Toad says when he dreams of owning a motor car. “Poop! Poop!”

scalt · 17/05/2026 23:56

@MotherOfCrocodiles I laughed out loud at “prohibit shit”.

This thread could be an advert for the pure absurdity of Mumsnet.

keepswimming38 · 17/05/2026 20:50

Oh god puking 🤮. Definitely no puking!

That would be really unwise. If the downstairs loo is the nearest, that's where pukers gotta puke. Otherwise you'll have puke all the way up the staircase.

TheDorisCollective · 17/05/2026 23:58

if you didn’t want turds bespoiling your coat room why didn’t you install a urinal?

I once lived in a flat that only had one loo with a macerator. It was fine. They are built to cope. Just have some air freshener available or a window/vent.

That’s not allowed. There needs to be a ‘normal’ toilet too, in case of a power cut.

scalt · 18/05/2026 00:02

Tigerbalmshark · 17/05/2026 21:36

That was my first thought too! I imagined an under-stairs cupboard, and somebody shutting themselves in there and shitting all over the coats and shoes 🤣🤣🤣

Perhaps this is why lots of Mumsnetters don’t like shoes in the house (another hotly debated topic). People mistake the toilet for the cloakroom, and do poos in the shoes. Better keep them out of the house, for safety.

LBFseBrom · 18/05/2026 00:02

People don't usually poop in the downstairs loo.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 18/05/2026 00:04

Twee little verse.

Presumably everyone will know that someone has gone to lay a cable if they go upstairs. What if they are desperate?

I think it may be better not to invite people round.

People don't usually poop in the downstairs loo.

In your house, do you mean.? Or is it one of those things that only people with more than one bathroom know? 😬

Tigerbalmshark · 18/05/2026 00:24

maudelovesharold · 17/05/2026 22:45

Wouldn’t it be quite unusual to need to poo in the morning and the afternoon?

No?

You clearly need more fibre in your diet Wink

BunnyWabbit2000 · 18/05/2026 00:25

You can't be serious.

Anonbakerylady · 18/05/2026 00:27

My MIL had a macerator 'cloakroom' in her old house which she told people never to poo in. We were staying at hers and I got the IBS call of nature, I forgot about the rule until it was too late. I was mortified but nothing bad happened. I told my husband and he told me he pooed in it all the time, as did his stepdad and brother.

I had sepsis after having DS1, please dont make your DD go upstairs when she doesn't need to. Let her poo downstairs in peace, she has been through enough.

DoAWheelie · 18/05/2026 00:37

JMSA · 18/05/2026 00:02

That’s not allowed. There needs to be a ‘normal’ toilet too, in case of a power cut.

It was a bug infested shoddily done attic conversion studio with a bog in a cupboard next to the kitchen and the electric on a pound coin meter being rented from landlord that didn't live in the country.

I doubt they really cared about regulations. But I was 17 and desperate and it cost £62.50 a week so I sucked it up and lived there until I could move to my uni dorm a year later.

RoseField1 · 18/05/2026 00:44

You cannot ask people not to poo in it, no. But you can install a key lock and keep it locked when guests are in the house, and direct them upstairs to the main bathroom when they need to use one.
For what it's worth we have a macerator toilet in our guest annexe which has pretty high traffic as I rent it on Airbnb and it's blocked once only from over use when two people were staying there first several weeks and I doubt yours would ever see that much activity!

CRCGran · 18/05/2026 01:05

Get a grip OP !!

apeaceful2026 · 18/05/2026 01:06

I would just keep it out of bounds for any guests, wee or poop, unless disabled. Just say because of your daughter's illness you'd like to keep it as a sanctuary for her. I kind of get you, it does feel weird pooping in a small room so close to a kitchen and living room. At least an upstairs bathroom usually gives you some space away from the door and the toilet usually has a bigger window by it. My daughter with SEN absolutely will not poop in the downstairs toilet and I have to get up the stairs with a mobility struggle to wipe her bottom even if I beg her to stay down here and poo. If I didn't have my mobility struggles, I'd probably prefer to go upstairs every time too.

moto748e · 18/05/2026 01:37

My DS has one of those loos in his house, The upshot was, after a while, nobody used it at all.
