AIBU to consider reporting a possibly false school catchment address?

I just found out a boy in DS’s class is going to a certain school that I know has an extremely strict catchment policy. I have a feeling they gave the in-laws address as the in-laws live near the catchment. We actually live close to this school than this boy so I’m really surprised they got a place. There is no SEN or sibling reason they got priority.

Morally I feel this is really bad of them but then I’m thinking why get involved. What would you do? How would you even report this?

Also another reason to keep out of it- my younger sister actually won an appeal to attend a secondary school out of catchment. This was because it was untenable for her to attend the catchment one where our cousins were due to a family court case. She was a child victim of crime. My mum has to put up with plenty of nosy school mums asking her how my sister got in there- my mum gave away nothing, it was extremely private and sensitive family business. They may have a similar reason you would know nothing about.

Exactly there might be a reason for this eg he will go to his grandparents before/after school, his parents work long hours etc.

Neither of those are acceptable reasons (in that, a place would not have been allocated on that basis).

We might not know if he has extenuating circumstances.

Latinglow · 17/05/2026 15:08

You have a feeling? They’ve either told you they lied about their address or they haven’t.

I remember a thread where someone was sure a large number of people are buying/renting entire extra houses on top of the one they already live in purely to be in the catchment of a good school.

As if there’s a large number of people rich enough to do that for it to be a big issue lol

TeaAndTattoos · 17/05/2026 15:12

So your doing it out of spite and pettiness because your child didn’t get a place and theirs did but you would be saying absolutely nothing if your child had got a place. Don’t pretend like your trying to the morally right thing when your not your just annoyed that your child didn’t get a place so if your child can’t go there neither can theirs because then it’s fair right.

Shes angry her child was a victim of fraud.

Apoarently doung what is best for your child is the rigbt thing to do, so reporting the cheat will be the best thing for her child.

CatRescueNeeded · 17/05/2026 15:24

Definitely report. If there are extenuating circumstances why he got that school then the admissions team will know about them and it won’t go any further. If he has fraudulently used grandparents address then the place should be taken off him and given to the first person on the waiting list

There are a large number of people who do exactly that.
The competition for some popular schools is brutal.
Why do you think the schools check so thoroughly if it never happens?

Large numbers of people who can afford to rent an entire extra house on top of the mortgage/rent they spend on the house they actually live in? Don’t make me laugh

Ive seen people on this site saying they should do away with sibling priority because of this. There are far more people who move house for legitimate reasons (landlord evictions etc) and why should they have to do multiple school drop offs for multiple siblings because of this paranoid bs

Catchment comes above siblings in many areas. Nothing to do with fraud, just ensuring places for local children.

I didn’t say it to make you laugh 🤷🏻‍♀️
It’s not particularly amusing, but it’s certainly true.

This is literally NONE of your business 😬
Why are you so invested in this?
How does it impact you?
Does it change things for you?
People like you infuriate me. Mind the business that pays you, and if it doesn't concern you or yours, keep your beak out.
Bloody busy body🙄🙄🙄

Not round here thankfully common sense rules

Buying or renting an entire extra house on top of paying rent /mortgage for your current one?
The small minority of people going to the level of doing that just let them have it at that point

Makes perfect sense here as otherwise children in the far reaches of the catchment couldnt get school places. Whereas families tbat have moved hacve a local school they can attend.

Round here siblings are always prioritised. I’ve had two landlord evictions since my eldest started school (nothing I did just them selling) and moved to different parts of the same town. Having my kids at different schools just because I moved would be an utter nightmare

It’s cheaper than 7
years of private school fees. It happens at most of the really sought after schools, or did.
School admissions are mainly on to it now.

Comtesse · 17/05/2026 16:24

I would not dream of interfering.

I’m conflicted. They are not very nice people to be quite honest but the grandparents are so lovely and I don’t want to cause the grandparents any stress. I grew up knowing them and they are lovely. I’m sure the primary place was gained fraudulently too as there’s no was they could have gotten in being in a completely different borough.

Is it possible the child has medical or social needs which you are not aware of? Is this a primary or secondary ?

Ffs op, just dob them in and be done with it.

this definitely happens where we live. Really annoying because they get the place and then immediately resume residence in their city 30-40mins away (and the bus has to put on buses for those kids) leaving the local kids who’ve always been here without a local school.

also means year 5 class numbers increase every term with only 1 teacher to manage it

Rents them out, but she would move in temporarily if need be and say she was on a break from her husband. So zero anyone can do about it. She has secured her son a spot in an excellent school and I admire her as a mother wanting the best for him and paying through the roof for it herself.

Haven’t they checked her council tax address?! It’s done all automatically here.
If you rent to get into a school your application can also be denied if they find out you own a second house which you haven’t sold yet.

MimiSunshine · 17/05/2026 18:20

Report them. If there’s no issue and it was gained due to factors you’re unaware of then there won’t be any problem will there?!

id set up a different email address to do it though.

CeciliaMars · 17/05/2026 18:22

I probably would report TBH.
