Rose advice to cover upsetting extension

Posting here for fastest replies as off to the garden centre at 10am.
Joined on (semi detached) next door neighbour's rear single story extension is officially finished.
I loathe what it has done to our garden.
We only have a small narrow garden and we are now boxed in by their extension. It's taken our garden from feeling open and with a view of trees to shaded in by their bricks. And although its only single story, it's really bloody high because the slated roof goes all the way up to their bedroom window ledge! It's enormous. I hate it. They've put in bifold doors which when fully opened up sit right up against our garden fence and tower above it, if I stretched my arm over our fence I'd be able able to wave my hand in the shiny new extension, that's how close their bifold sits up against the fence. And they've filled their gigantic roof with deluxe windows. They have their door fully open and windows fully open as we speak and their household noise - Taylor Swift playing, 1 DC playing keyboard very badly along to it, 1 DC having a screaming meltdown as per usual, the mother shouting at them "CHILDREN DON'T DO THAT" all in surround sound stereo flooding into our quiet little family life now that they've built an extension with full width bifolds and an opening roof.
I hate them for building so selfishly and I need to meditate in order to manage my irrational anger towards them. We are a peaceful, quiet little family who treasured our little quiet garden, it was previously my sanctuary where I de-stressed after recovery from a long chemo journey and the challenges of ND DC who are wonderful in every way but who require non stop input and support. They too crave peace and quiet, they are upset by the shrieking and overly loud music and keyboard playing next door as we speak. It sounds like it's all coming from our own house, only we'd never in a million years make this level of noise. And I can't even complain because they are not in their garden they are INSIDE their house but they now have a wide open house with no wall at the back of their house!!😭
Anyway I've cried for long enough and now I want to grow a massively fast growing huge rambling rose to cover the side aspect of their 4 metre extension and their roof up to bedroom window height that we now look at when we're in our little garden.
Our fence is 5 foot high and it extends out 4 metres along our fence and as high as the bedroom windows.
I know I can't grow a rose directly on to their brickwork.
Help me! What is the fastest growing rose i can buy? Is there a rose that will grow a lot even in this summer? And what can I use to support it growing really high without it directly on their brickwork?
I'm so stuck and so desperate to quickly cover this eyesore.
(BTW roses love our soil - seem to thrive in gardens around here.)

Bamboo is the quickest growing, plant a wall of it!

Whoknowswhatanymore · Today 08:47

Bamboo roots spread terribly and can cause a lot of damage. What about a Laurel hedge?

Cheesipuff · Today 08:49

I think I would get a big frame built slightly in front of wall and above it ? 6ft -doesn’t have to be solid -posts with wires across-my DD is in a good rose area and is always hacking them back as they get so big but they are gorgeous.
Then you can have 2 or 3
Bamboo makes a swishing sound which would help drown noise and running water is supposed to be good too -so little pond/ waterfall
and remember DCs grow up and will be lolling in their room not tinkling the piano soon
addiing - bamboo in pots not ground

I know you want roses, but two or three pleached trees would be the quickest and easiest way to regain some privacy and green outlook. Maybe then rose bushes underneath?

user1494050295 · Today 08:52

Take photos so when you go to the garden centre you can ask their advice

ThatJadeLion · Today 08:52

Five foot fence is nothing. Go maximum height (not sure if it's 6 foot 6).

Yes, pleached trees.

Don’t grow bamboo! You’ll regret it.

Rosa Filipe Kiftsgate is extremely rampant. Also look at Rambling Rector.

Makemeinvisible · Today 08:54

I can't recommend a rose PP but I can offer you my sympathy, and my anger, actually, at the destruction of your quiet haven.
This unfortunately is what happens to quiet, peaceful little families: they get trampled underfoot by noisy , selfish people who don't understand or care that other people don't want their intrusive noise and boisterous life style thrust upon them.
I'm so sorry.

CmonBobby · Today 08:56

rambling roses don’t have a long flowering season and aren’t evergreen or lush in winter so a lot of the year you won’t get the effect you’re after.
Firstly can you put in 6 foot high fences? Add a trellis on top? Might feel a bit boxed in but I’d rather be boxed in with fence than with next doors extension.
what about Ivy? Or some tall pleached trees (expensive). We’ve got a Red Robin hedge on one side which we put in and it’s really done the job.

CoffeeCantata · Today 08:58

Sorry, OP - no practical advice except to say that the right plant will actually grow pretty fast and in a year or so, things may be much better.

God, I hate this situation. We had it on both sides and it changed the feel of our garden completely. A little add-on is one thing, but these vast extensions which stretch down half the garden are a totally different matter. I wish planning permission restricted their size a bit more.

I just don't think I could ever build an extension which would spoil my neighbours' quality of life. I just coudn't sleep at night. They should move!

ACynicalDad · Today 08:58

I always buy roses from David Austin and they are excellent. Look at Rambling roses on their website, they’re wonderful.

Pinkginwithice · Today 09:01

See the above for some ideas. Nice idea to have your own small water feature also.

Tel12 · Today 09:02

Extend the height of your fence with trellis. I have R. Bobby James on a pergola and it's rampant. White flowers in summer. Rambling Rector lives up to it's name, white flowers too. People grow it up trees. Maybe plant some repeat climbers too to expend the flowering season. You could also plant a Montana clematis they are fast growing. If it gets too much you can prune. Strongly advise against bamboo.

BarbiesDreamHome · Today 09:02

You want the David Austin Bobbie James. It's a 35ft rambler.

It grew to the height of the fence in the first year and about 1.5 metres left and right. It also put up shoots from where I'd bent/shaped the stem.

Fair warning, the stem is as fat as a finger and the prickles are very sharp so be prepared for that with pruning.

Can you tell pur neighbours put in a similarly hideous extension 🤔 🫢😆

Dougt · Today 09:04

Have a look at the David Austin website. Roses, like most plants, will take a while to establish and but down roots before they get going. I have David Austin Bathsheba (in full sun) which I could recommend as it keeps its leaves well through the winter, and it’s pretty dense and vigorous. If the extension is 4 m long I’d get more than one.

Tel12 · Today 09:04

While you are at the garden centre put on some rap or jazz super loud on repeat. Happy shopping!

Petrolitis · Today 09:04

Someone at work was in exactly this situation.

Narrow garden, massive overshadowing extension blocking out light. Insanely, selfishly noisy next door family. Ive been to their house and I don't know how they cope.

They planted various things but the lilac trees and buddleia seems to have been very successful.

They also had some Hollyhocks to provide quick coverage for the first few years.

Massive sympathy OP I don't even go in my back garden since the neighours extension ruined our house. Husband sees this as our forever home but I hate living here now as they've done so much damage.

MementoMountain · Today 09:04

We have an apparently unkillable rosa "New Dawn". It's long escaped its original pergola and then the 6foot support I put in for it after the pergola fell down and likes to wave at me from the top of a 15 foot tree nearby. It has long whippy shoots that could be wrangled back against a trellis pretty easily. On present showing, I think it would probably outlast their extension.

Pinkginwithice · Today 09:04

You can also buy noise reduction fences.

UnaOfStormhold · Today 09:05

For this year you may want to look at annual climbers which will grow loads in a year and give you cover while also planting something perennial that will take longer to establish but give lasting cover. Some ideas here https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/types/climbers/using-annuals

I love New Dawn. I have it in a trough by the back door and it's probably 10 foot even with it's root restrictions. Currently in full bud.

fashionqueen0123 · Today 09:07

Get a proper fence and it will be fine. Why is it only 5 foot? No wonder it’s annoying you. You’d be able to see into the other persons garden!

Me and my neighbours houses both have extensions and they’re hidden by the fences.

Rosesformygarden · Today 09:08

Have a look at David Austin’s Bring Me Sunshine, it’s an apricot rose. Lots of YouTube recommendations. And it’s now classified as a climber as it grows so fast and flowers all summer. Also low on thorns and great fragrance. Or Gertrude Jekyll is also lovely if you like pink. PP idea of a water feature to give you some white noise is great. I agree with others that a 5 foot fence is too low.
