I once asked a member of the Senior Team if she had dyed her hair.
Apparently this was very rude.

I had a manager once who decided he would 'give me gentle reminders' for small things that the other managers and colleagues never batted an eyelid at. I once said I'm just popping out to the garden for a break in a teams chat. Apparently that was against some sort of rule he made up.
Fortunately I got promoted since and he is no longer my manager.

Putting my out of office on when I was out of office 🤷 Apparently it made me look 'unavailable' to the internal team.

@chailatte123 I asked a director if she’d had her lips done. She had, it looked good, she wasn’t offended and I didn’t get told off. Imagine two adult women talking about beauty and aesthetics! Alert the police!

Thanks!! I genuinely wouldn't mind if someone asked me if I had dyed my hair or had my lips done. I'd class it as bonding!!

For being accused of being 15 mins late every day when I was in fact at the other end of the building working diligently away. Silly cow.

Years ago I decided to push back a bit around a gift collection. Background was after being in the job one week I was asked to contribute £30 (as I say, 20+ years ago) to a 60th birthday present. I did. It was Hobson’s Choice really.

A year or two later, Someone tipped me off that people were signing cards, gift tags etc and not contributing to gifts (people who were very proud of their fabulous lifestyle, DH’s great job - I was single) so after being asked to cough up another £££ I asked the Head whether everyone who was signing the cards was making a contribution?

All Hell broke loose.

But then, she didn’t really run the school. The TA who lived locally and had a very - ahem - strong personality did.

There was a signal failure and all trains were cancelled. No buses that wouldn't have taken 3 hours plus.

When I got to work an hour late I had to go through the whole 'what can we do to support you so that you can get to work on time' rigmarole. I'd never been late before.

It’s not worth complaining about though. An eye roll would have sufficed.

I’ve quite often said, ‘have you dyed your hair, it looks lovely’, and people are only ever pleased because they have dyed their hair to make it look lovely, so are pleased that someone has noticed.

It’s a normal social interaction.

I used to work in a restaurant, 20-odd years ago.

The manager was an utter bitch, and so were a few customers, always calling staff into the office for bollockings, even for just the most smallest insignificant things.

I went in one day with one hell of a migraine, spaced out, dizzy, etc., but I carried on working. I was pale and shaking, and while on duty, dealing with customers, I dashed to the loo thinking I was going to be sick.

One of the customers, a woman, could see I was really busy doing a trillion things, and I told her I had a migraine, so I'm not ''fully with it''.

She tried to crack one of her brain-numbing, boring jokes, which she always came out with, and thought she was exceedingly funny. I didn't laugh, just carried on working, and walked away.

Minutes later, the manager bitch drags me into the office. Apparently, the old fat cow actually reported me for not laughing at her stupid jokes, and she'd seen me running to the loo while I was dealing with customers and was busy!

I snapped at her that I was VERY busy, ill with a migraine and working my arse off, and would she rather I run to the loo for sickness or puke all over the floor? Then I grabbed my bag and walked out, never to return.

I work in a school. We had staff training after school hours which was mostly admin in our classrooms. We had a five minute meeting at the end, in the school hall, which is next to the exit doors.
The classrooms are spread out with some in separate buildings. It was raining.
There were no chairs set out in the hall, it was a “standing around the edges of the room” type quick meeting.
Many staff had their coats on, or their bags on their backs as they had walked across the school grounds in the rain and were shortly going home.

We got shouted out for being “unprofessional” for not taking our coats and bags off

So you don't think it's rude to comment on people's appearances at work? Would you comment on a male colleague's appearance, just out of interest?

For not emptying the crumb tray on the staff toaster at the end of my shift. The toaster I hadn't ever used. And this was 2 weeks after the fact so I had no idea who might have used it either side.

It was the worst job I ever had with the shittiest manager. When all the staff jointly complained about him to his manager, we were called into a meeting to discuss our complaints. He was in attendance and his manager started the meeting with "I want to remind you all that you're in your probationary period before you say anything". Literally no-one went ahead with their complaints. We all left over the next 3 months and the facility was closed down.

I have none diabetic hypoglycemia. I have to eat little and often to keep stable. I ate part of my sandwich like I had done for the 2 years previous with no issue, but this time I ended up with a record of conversation for eating.

AnneLovesGilbert · 16/05/2026 09:48

Someone asked where my boss was as he wasn’t at his desk. I said I didn’t know (wasn’t his PA, no access to his diary, not my business), he stormed up to me later that day to say he’d been told that this person had been told that he wasn’t at his desk. He was livid. I never did find out where he’d been but we often had meetings away all over the place so none of it was in any way remarkable or even interesting. I shrugged and said but it was true and then he admitted it was and walked off. Very odd.

EvilParsnip · 16/05/2026 09:48

I was told off for serving a customer. Apparently I was paid to work, not serve customers.
This was in a haberdashery shop, and my contract (drawn up by the very person telling me off) clearly stated that serving customers was part of my role.

Ilovecoffeeme · 16/05/2026 09:48

Years ago I was told off for not saying good morning or bye to colleagues. For context they were in a different office to me and I had to walk past theirs to get to mine. I’d shout morning and bye as I walked past their open door but they complained to our boss that I was ignoring them! I told my boss they needed to grow up. She agreed but because they’d raised it formally she had to speak to me!

Being late to a team meeting because I was collecting a big bespoke cake for a big event my line manager had ordered from a location 10 miles away at the same time as the meeting - that she had arranged. She bawled me out in front of the rest of the team and grabbed the cake from the boot of my cake and managed to crack it. Rest of the team struggled to suppress their sniggers. 😎

Eelge · 16/05/2026 09:49

Discussing what I was going to have for dinner that evening (spaghetti bolognese)

Whataflippincircus · 16/05/2026 09:50

I was told off for listening to phone calls when I did relief for the switchboard operator. I definitely hadn’t been listening but I was still told off.

Edits not working. That should have been ‘boot of my car’.

As in medical consultants?

Yep. I'm just a peasant nurse.

RaraRachael · 16/05/2026 09:52

As a teacher I got told off for telling the class that Vesuvius is in the Italian mainland.
A parent had phoned up to complain because, "It's on sn island" 🙄

Fireside10 · 16/05/2026 09:53

I apparently looked nervous after a tough teams call and was asked if this is the job for me and if i should go forward in my role.

FWIW there were no tears, no tantrums, no panicking I was actually just thinking of the next steps on a complex project. That and I clearly have a face like a smacked arse 😂
