I once asked a member of the Senior Team if she had dyed her hair.
Apparently this was very rude.

Somebody I know (dental nurse) used a latex glove (blown up) to distract a scared 6 year old having a filling and was reprimanded for 'wasting resources'. Told she'd have to pay for it - she told them to invoice her and hasn't heard anything since. Funny that.

Pathetic. I had to spend a night in hospital when I was 3 or 4 after an accident. I still remember the doctor making me a chicken out of a glove, must be one of my earliest memories.

I got screamed at for putting extra chairs out during an assembly for the parents.

When I was training to be a TA, I got told of for using the word ‘outwith’, in an essay, apparently it’s Scottish and not used in England. (I’m Scottish but live in England).

I had a stop gap job in a call centre where the manager and her pa for some reason took a dislike to me (I think it was because my husband was a manager in another department, in another building and often had to make decisions about the call centre), I was told of by the PA for wearing cream coloured chinos whilst she was standing there in more or less the same outfit as they weren’t ‘professional’. I’d worn them with a heel and nice blouse. It was a call centre in the middle of a town centre where we saw no one.

I once had a summer job between university holidays in a call Centre, and I was wearing a tshirt- blouse and a pair of grey trousers and was told it wasn’t smart enough.

Apparently when I am concentrating on taking in something being said to me I don’t make it apparent enough that I am listening.

This was basically me not making enough eye contact as I am autistic.

I have been told off for "seeming distracted". I have ADHD and if I'm not looking at you, I'm more likely to be paying attention that if I am.

I'm not sure why passengers would be tutting and sighing, as surely anyone with common sense would know that public transport can't leave a stop until the designated time.

On the rare occasions that a train has departed early, I've been extremely annoyed, so yes I would rather have a service run 5 - 15 mins late than for it to be too early.

Because most people are out for themselves?!
I was a bus driver 25 years ago, I’m now a paramedic and the level of entitlement is shocking. Sometimes, we have to park in the middle of the road, blocking through traffic, this is always for good reason too. But, the amount of irate, angry individuals who beep/swear/furiously knock on the ambo door because ‘they have to be somewhere’ is astounding. I’ve had it on an arrest, the patient arrested as we got on the vehicle so we were going nowhere fast (we stabilise first) midway through the 3rd cycle of CPR, the door swung open to an irate chap that needed to get to a shop before it closed. Despite our pleas he continued his rant, all whilst I delivered a 3rd shock. The look on his face when that shock was delivered - it was that point that he knew he’d fucked up. Didn’t get an apology, but he did slam the door shut at least.

My friend was wfh and they had a Teams meeting. She got told off by the boss' boss for wearing a hoodie. Guess what was the boss' boss wearing? Yep, a hoodie. My friend's was black with a panel of leopard print. The latter's was wearing a hoodie with some alcohol slogan/graphic.

There were about 40 on that meeting and at least 8 others were wearing hoodies.

I didn't, unfortunately - I didn't have the confidence at the time. I would if it happened now, but it's a long time ago - over ten years.

In her defence, she has mellowed considerably and I don't believe would act like that to anybody now.

Yes, I understand that you couldn't at the time.

I work as a language teacher for adults, and think about how I tell adults that their work isn't up to scratch, etc. It's not like talking to child pupils.

I got told off for ‘having alcohol’ in the office because I had a bottle of Prosecco with me that I was taking to a friend’s house after work. It was in my bag and tucked away under my desk, I’m amazed the manager that told me off even noticed 😂

Isn't it wild how different offices are? When I worked in the public sector we weren't allowed to drink on work time but there was no expectation we wouldn't perhaps buy alcohol to drink at another time and have it under our desk. My colleague and I used to joke about our clinking Bags for Life.

My current office often has grateful clients and so we have bottles of wine on the premises. Apart from the CEO joking when things aren't going particularly well that day (volatile market at the moment) that we should crack open a bottle it's not even an issue. To the extent I had a video call when I was at home and my colleague was in the office. She had the gift shelf behind her and it was full of bottles of wine 🙈 I did have to suggest she either blurred her background or we found somewhere else in the office for the gift shelf!

I arranged a meeting with a parent (teacher) to discuss the fact that their daughter was a little bit behind where she should be.
When the parents didn’t like having been told this, I was told off for arranging the meeting.
The person who told me off (headteacher) was the person who told me to arrange the meeting in the first place 🤷‍♀️

SpinelessBastardsAll · 16/05/2026 21:12

I got called in to our head office and was told the agency job that I'd been at the day before had complained about me sleeping (!!) on the job and leaving early. It was on a shop floor (where would i sleep?) I had covered everyones breaks and had not been given one myself. I even stayed on an extra hour to help as it was busy. So the manager who signed my time sheet knew I had left at 4pm instead of 3pm. Wanker.

GoldInYourSmile · 16/05/2026 21:19

Tonnes, from the same place.

Years ago I worked in complaints in an office off a call centre. Had to print a 400 page thing off. Printer ran out of paper, I asked someone where any more was, he told me where and I went to find it. Was about 5 mins, my manager sent someone to look for me! Got brought back and told it wasn’t up to me to find new paper and to let someone else replace it before continuing to print…

JayJayj · 16/05/2026 21:30

I used to work for JJB Sports. The senior management (area managers and above) were absolute dick heads. Very authoritarian type. (It did change the last few years before it closed due to laws)

One area managers visit, he’d been picking at all sorts around the store. Said to the assistant manager “ why are there scissors here?” The answer was to cut the paper from returns (we had to photo copy receipts) he looked dumb because it was obvious we needed them, he then decided to have a go because they were too big.

It was an awful place to work.

MyEasterBonnet · 16/05/2026 21:31

For going outside during my work break and clocking back in one minute early. It wasn’t early enough.

CatsandSun · 16/05/2026 21:34

For not being able to see, I’m blind in one eye, they’ve changed the colour and font on the sales floor computer, I made a mistake.. Was advised by supervisor to try glasses.. Genius idea.

icannotlivelaughloveintheseconditions · 16/05/2026 21:43

Finishing a session five minutes late. It did not impact on any one in any way.

forgetting to push my chair under the desk at the end of the day

not putting my pen in the drawer at the end of the day

opting to serve customers over tidying up

Staying late to finish jobs

leaving on time when jobs are not finished

FindingNeverland28 · 16/05/2026 21:46

Many moons ago, I worked at a well known 4 letter supermarket as a cashier. A customer had accidentally picked up 2 of the same magazine, so left one at the checkout. During a very quiet period as I was sat there twiddling my thumbs, I decide to have a flick through the magazine. My manager, who absolutely had it in for me decided to pull me into the office with HR and give me a disciplinary for ‘vandalising company property’ as they could no longer sell the magazine. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it.

EightySixFortySeven · 16/05/2026 21:46

In the early 2000s I was asked to phone national rail enquiries to check a timetable for my manager

I went online to the National Rail Enquiries website and printed off the entire timetable. I thought this was more efficient and took out the risk of me accidentally writing down a wrong time.

My manager got right in my face, shouting “I told you to phone them”. I didn’t go back after that

ThatLemonBee · 16/05/2026 21:48

I asked a candidate I was interviewing how old her daughter was , she already had told me she had a child so it wasn’t me that asked , as a joke I said something among the lines of my 3 year old would be very good at that , and she said my daughter is exactly same so I asked “ is she 3 too “ .
HR told me off for asking her specifics about her child as it can be seen as discrimination 🙄

Libertoo · 16/05/2026 21:52

I got told off for leaving work at 16:59 and stealing company time. The fact I came in 30-45 mins early every day due to bus timings didn’t matter 😂

gabsdot45 · 16/05/2026 21:53

I told an IT person about an error Id made. They needed to know as they were the person who could fix the error.

My supervisor was furious that I hadn't told her first as it had "left her exposed" because she was unaware of the mistake. She said I should have told her and she would have told the IT person.

She really told me off. I was completely mystified as to why she was so upset but in the end I just apologized.

80smonster · 16/05/2026 21:57

KTheGrey · 16/05/2026 21:58

Prioritising students’ engagement over learning.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 16/05/2026 22:04

First job as a 16yr old. I was filing microfiche on my own in what was realistically a cupboard with a window. Bored senseless doing this thankless task for a week. I took my Walkman in (1980s) so I could listen to music as I ploughed on. The HoD walked past, saw my headphones & went absolutely beserk at me.

Grandma600 · 16/05/2026 22:06

Many years ago I had a part time job in a typing pool. The other women were full time, and all went to lunch half an hour before the end of my working day, so I had the place to myself.
I was severely told off for working too hard during that half hour because it "showed the others up" 🙄
I found another job PDQ
